Finally a video of someone who actually knows how to change aquarium water!!
The key is "LITTLE AS POSSIBLE" Not this 50% crap. Those who change 50% or more weekly are just bandaiding a more serious problem in their tanks. As long as you keep the nitrates within safe levels 40.0 ppm or lower and the "gunk" cleaned out of the tank and substrate, you are fine. I have been doing this for over 40 years now and never changed more then 20%, and no fish deaths, other then old age or being eatten.
Back in my day we got a glass bowl a small layer of stones to clean get the fish in a separate bowl clean the glass stones put the stones back in then water the the fish your done
im thinking of getting a fish tank (plastic 30 litres) and a pump and gravel. what sort of fish would be good for this ( i know goldfish and shibunkins are)
I have a question.love your videos by the way.my first time with a fish and I didn't know you were suppose to do this.but now my tiger catfish is dying.is there any other way to save it.I mix all the old water with new one on accident.fuck.
You don't need to "suck" it...you can place the whole hose under water till air is gone then hold your thumb on one end and drag the other one out fast (must be below the one your holding) atleast that's how i'm doing it and works just fine :)
i used the siphone and that is how i start mine XD it's disgusting but there is no other way. sometimes it will get in ur mouth if u don't time it right. puke
lol my dad used a siphon.... we had too many small fish to take them all out.... if you cant guess what happend from there you need to see a docter....
i have a question would any water conditioner work with betta fish because i have one called aquasafe and it says works with all fresh adn salt water fish but someone told me to get one at a store specifically for bettas so i don't know plz help me i don't wanna waste money
@pkedjustin get the ones made specifically for bettas. bettas are weird and have requirements and the water conditioner is a really easy one. the bottle probably will read betta water conditioner or something
omg this dude doesnt give good advice. in all his videos (ive only seen 1 other lol) ppl r saying stuff like he's doing it wrong and i agree. y dont u stop rushing and actually explain crap damn it.
eww thats not a good way to start a siphon... unless you wanna drink fish water... try this... when you get water in the line lift up the hose... when water starts coming out of the bottom of the hose.. cover the hole with your thumb than put the top part back in the aquarium let it fill again... voila... instant suction without the fish breath... LOL... if you have a long hose you may have to dunk it in and out a few more times...
im new to salt water aquriums i have kept a fresh water tank for a year now and just up graded to salt water this vid is not giving me the information to change the water in my salt water tank can anyone reply with some usefull information plz.
With using the siphon. When your mixing the conditioner with the water, how many buckets would you add to the tank and do you put 1 conditioner spill in 1 of the water buckets or everytime you add an extra bucket?
phythons are really bad for your fish l0l gets rid of all your bacteria my gravel never is phyphon but i have fish that pick at the gravel 24/7 and get the dirt in the water than the filter catches it, this way when i replace filter pads the bacteria will not cause the tank will re cycle how ever this style can only be used for cichlids and gold fish so you can't use my method for tropicals(what ever you spell it lol)
When he sais about cleaing the gravel. If you have smaller sediment/gravel, then you should buy a gravel cleaner. As other wise the gravel is sucked up the hose. A gravel cleaner is just a kind of large weird shaped end for a hose that disperses the water flow. (sounds complicated)
water aren't "detrimental" always, but a water change, should only be a temporary fix to a temporary problem, when used constantly because you didn't use adequeate filtration, it is removing beneficial bacterium and disrupting th equilibrium, and that is detrimental.
to give an example, a reef tank. the salinity in it has every element known to man in a certain concentration.
change that water, and you WILL disrupt a few of the eleental balances.
d many are inversely and directly related, hough all are tangently related.
i am n ot saying that water changes aren;t useful everyonce in a while, just saying that when used on a schedule, such as they are in the expert village videos, they are detrimental to maintaining the stability of your aquarium.
need a cheep way to remove nutrients?
get rid of some fish, or feed less.
if your use a better filter, or a different media, then you will not need water changes any more.
All you need is a piece of hose. You just put one end in the water, then suck on the hose a little bit to get the water moving in to the hose then put the end of the hose lower than the end in the fish tank in to a bucket or something
when you do a water change you put only the water conditioning for the amount of water you are changing, right? or you do the cond. for the entire tank?
You really need an aquarium gravel vacuum...not just a siphon hose. The gravel needs cleaning. Plus you don't have to suck on the end of the hose either. They can be started in other easier ways.
You buy a small heater and drop it into the container you mix your water in, set it to the same temperature of your tank, and give it at least a half hour to heat up and set. It's easier to get water from your sink and turn it until it feels about the same temp as your tank... It saves some time and money, at least. And please- always mix water and conditioner or water, salt mix, and conditioner prior to the water change. It's better to get your water ready the day before so you're ready to go.
Why does aging no longer have affect in evaporating the chlorine anymore?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
water changes are detrimental to a fish tank. if you need to do one, you are not properly filtering your tank.
ctenophor 2 years ago
What makes you say that?
HigherPlanes 2 years ago
well, all aquarist( good ones at least), excepting certain circumstances, look for stability in their tanks.
they believe that the key to maintaining a tank properly is stability in parameters.
water changes are done in tanks that have too many nutrients.
if you have a strang enough filtration system, those nutrients will be taken up.
theirfore negating the need for a waterchange, and increasing the stability of water paramaters.

shut up you fool.
michaelnc10 2 years ago
care to elaborate?
ctenophor 2 years ago
water changes we all need to do them no matter what filtration system you have so saying a water change is detrimental is wrong.
michaelnc10 2 years ago
i dont meen to sound like a parot....but, care to elaborate furthur as to why they are needed?
nutrients?
replaceing trace elements?
removing so-called "unremovable solutes and solids"?
