Tempered glass is very resiliant stuff. What was put in there may have been HS (heat strenghthened), which is even stronger than straight tempered. I'd also venture that glass to be either 3/16" or 1/4".
On discovery channel I saw an old leyland mini car dropped from 5 feet onto toughened glass and didn't break, they hit it with a baseball bat and hammer and still ok!
It i normal glass heated to 600 deg celcius and slowley cooled they say to get rid of micro fractures in normal glass.
This makes it 5 times stronger they said.
I have hit 4mm toughened with a hammer realy hard and not broke it!
this would not e a good idea with sandels

It did with a large brick thrown hard at it!
But if you get 12mm then hell strong!
