you can't add actions to a button, you have to add it to the frame.

Are you using Actionscript 3? You have to be using Actionscript 2 if you are getting that message.

There was a merger in late 2007. Macromedia Flash 8 became Adobe Flash CS3 in its next generation. You most likely have Macromedia Flash 8 or Flash MX or Flash MX 2004. Its essentially the same idea though. AS3 has better capabilities than both AS2 and AS1.
