It's relative. "Soon" in astronomy can mean 100,000 years or less in the case of Eta Carinae or in the case of Alpha Orionis (Betelgeuse) it's within the next 1 Million years. Bear in mind as well that this window is from 1 year to that 1 Million years. Huge window for us, not so for a star.
