  • Had the same sound on my 2004 745li

A/C clutch ....When the A/C is on it went away....

  • had this problem over the last couple of months bought a used engine for 4200 and labor costed me 1700 ..

dont fucking waste your time on a BMW if u cant afford that shit .. i paid 14000 for this car make that 19k+ now fuck my life

  • Yes, buy the warranty is a lot cheaper, personally I had never experience a mayor problem with BMW's I been buying them for 14 years 3,5,6 series but if the warranty will be to expired I will buy the warranty!

  • sounds like the lifters I have a 325i 2006, if it goes away after warming up don't worry about it won't hurt the engine if it continues you need new lifters and possibly heads

  • Lifter Tick maybe?

  • dude you fucked ur engine xD

  • That's the sound of lots of money falling out of your wallet.

  • what was it?

  • MY ENGINE ON MY CITREON C5 DONE THE SAME AND EVERYONE THOUGHT IT WAS A DIESEL, I GOT A ENGINE FLUSH THEN PUT IT IN RAN THE ENGINE FOR 15 MIN THEN DRAINED OLD OIL AND THE REPLACED OIL FILER PUT DRAIN PLUG BACK ON THEN FILLED WITH NEW 10/40 SYTHETIC OIL THE ADDED wynns valve/hydraulic tappet cleaner, AT FIRST ON START UP STILL THE SAME ,THEN 20 MILES LATER BLOODY BRILLIANT CANT HERE IT KNOW MORE,SOUNDS LIKE A NEW ENGINE 10/10 TO WYNNS.

  • rod bearing

  • you bent a valve..

  • the can be caused by putting a lower grade fuel into the car, bmw's require premium

  • my 06 530i does the same thing. gets quiet with fresh oil change and warmer weather but it does it in the cold all the time. 40k miles.

  • I test drove a brand new 535i the other day and it makes the same noise....

  • sounds like diesel sprinter ore regular 5.7 dodge with lifter noise.

  • Ticking is caused by the valve lifters.....it is a known problem across various engines, with the N52 being the most recent.

Step 1 is to replace the valve lifters. Step 2 is to replace the engine head with an updated part #. Your dealer is only allowed to proceed with step 2 after the valves have been replaced and you come back complaining about the ticking coming back.

The new part # contains a check valve to maintain oil pressure when the car is off.

  • Wow, r u kidding me? 7k?

    That was just the valves...

the guy ripped u off big time...

  • sounds like DEFLECTION RAIL, GUIDE RAIL

  • did you get this fixed? Did you take a look at the pulleys/belts tensioner?

  • I heard a bigger motorblock needs longer warm up time.

  • $7000 to fix it? I know this video is 2 years old, but I would just like to know what you decided to do. And didn't you have warranty on the car still?

  • @TornTech The car was out of warranty and lesson learned that always get a warranty for the car. The car is sold and got an M5 with warranty.

  • wow check out my vid... sounds just like this...

  • does sound like a bad valve, but didnt the 545i have and the lower cc'd V engines have big problems with the nikasil lined cylinders. word had it that if you could prove decent service history they would swap or modify the engine. premature bore wear was a big problem on the monster 5 series due to the nikasil linings. hope this helps.

  • continued post thanks to 500 character limit:

    galenpowers continued:

Service records showed all maintenance done by previous owner too and clean carfax.

I hope this isn't typical of BMW quality, bummer

  • I think Miguel is absolutely right. I have an 04 545i and the number 6 cylinder walls are severely scored. The main clues were:

Black oily plug in number 6 hole

    Louder cold, quieter warm

Started out very subtle at 53K and was loud by 68K

Drive the car up to 3000 rpms and take your foot off of the gas, the noise decreases drastically or goes away decelerating

Unfortunately it looks like my 68k motor is now scrap aluminum.

  • I have the same noise, but maybe louder. (2004 545i) Local dealer " Swope BMW in Louisville Ky " has no idea what it is after first trip to service. They act like they have never seen this problem before. Anybody know how to handle this when the car has 68k miles and a third party 50/50 warranty.

  • Cylinder head replacement fixes this. BMW is very aware of defective cylinder heads and graciously replace these if your car is warranted. If not warranted any more, you can get away with driving the car like this as long as it goes away once warmed up.

  • so......was it fixed.....how much?

  • What oil brand/grade, do you put in there and how many litters . My w210 ticks too but disappears after maybe 5 mins. after reaching its normal operating temperature.

  • around 90000 km.

  • vanos

  • Every BMW I've owned has done this. Never has it been a problem...I got 300,000 miles out of my last 325i with this. It's fine. Great engines! Just not quiet pussy engines...sorry.....

  • haha i totally agree with you. i have a 1993 325i and just came up on its b-day on sept 3rd. almost 400,000 miles and tapping sound been there for quite some time now. nothin to worry about

  • @jrjinsa I'll rephrase that for you. Bad engines, not built for lasting, makes lots of noises due to being badly engineered and unrefined.

And before anyone says anything, I have a 540i and I love my car to bits, but the engine is not very refined.

  • @IDaedalus yea i have a 540 & it makes this noise not so loud though but anoying sounds like a diesel

  • Wow some people have no fucking clue.

It could be due to stretching of the timing chain, in which case the dealer should cover it because that is a lifetime part.

It could also be a lifter, and they are fairly cheap to replace. In order to know which head to pull you would need to isolate the sound and go from there.

  • I got the engine replaced. the big issue is discovered and it was the cylinder head #7 that is heavily damaged. the lifters, etc are fine.

  • What was the damage caused by?

BTW it sounds almost like a bad valve.

  • No, Lifters, valves are fine. the problem is the cylinder wall is scratched. Now the car runs beautifully.

  • What caused the scratching?

  • Unknown... they said some faulty oil spraying on that cylinder. or overheating... I dont know.

  • beautiful engine

  • sounds like a lifter or a tensioner. it's only happening at a rate of about 1 knock per revolution

  • The united state's fuel is horribly low grade, its hard to build a performance engine that will tolerate what fuel they sell here.

  • valve ping! i dont think it will cause damage thou..try flushing the old engine oil and refill..

  • i have a 540i v8 4.4 & makes more or less the same noise to me bmw arent what thay used to be

  • This happens when you don't put premium gas into your car.

  • i have the same kind of noise on a M20 E30 325i high mileage from 1987.

they told me the engine is ill.

  • just adjust the valves.. also the M20 is ticky . it came from the factory like that so no worries

  • I have that same sound in my subaru liberty except its louder...

  • I have the same problem on my 97 m3, it comes on as soon as i turn the ignition. the seller who sold me the car told me in order to get rid of the noise I'll have to run the car at minimum oil requirement, in other words, use the dip stick to messure the oil level and drain it down to the minimum level that requires to operate the car. it worked for me, i just need to check the oil level more frequently but the noise is gone.

  • I had two mid to late 2004 745i's and sold them both because of this annoying noise! The first car was high mileage when I bought it and I had assumed it had had a hard life however the next was low mileage. I am interested to know if it only affected some cars and more importantly excactly what it is. My dealer tried to help under warranty but it just became an annoying headache! Are the N62N newer 4.8L motors ok??

  • N62TU is a lot better wait till 09 yo purchase a 750 when the new 7(F01) comes out they'll be a lot cheaper

  • i have the same problem!!! I was told by the bmw mechanic that the hydraulic lifters get air into them if you drive lots of short trips and that makes the tic. he told me that bmw tells him to start up the car and let the oil warm up for 5 mins and then rev the engine to 4000 rpm for 10 or 15 mins and that gets rid of the tic. i still think bmw is working on sometype of long term solution. its still annoying tho

  • Well I think they all tick like that, I have an older BMW 2001 740il and it has always ticked when I first started it but when I drive it's nothing but perfection

  • I have the same car. And the same noise. Sound really more like a diesel than like a 4.4l V8.

I read about the same problem in various forums where it was described. Obviously this is normal, you have to live with that...

  • Sounds like no oil, or maybe something minor other wise it wouldn't be running so well despite the recurrent noise.

  • yes I checked it has full oil.
