  • Linus is a rude guy and usually he has no idea of what he is talking about. Linux was just lucky that Berkeley decided to stop its project and now we are left to bear with this Monolithic Kernel which is more or less heading towards Windows and other unreliable OS.

  • I love people crying over RS not being mentioned. It's been 20+ years and the GNU Hurd is still epic fail. Linux is successful because the kernel is great.

  • The only reason is caught on was because it the GNU project made it a complete Operating System... it's actually kind of annoying to watch this video.

  • @XanderXereus It wouldn't have caught on without it being complete, but the real reason it caught on was because of it's nature. Because it was free, and, after some time, highly reliable.

  • Linux is just the kernel. The GNU/Linux OS comprises of both Richard Stallman's GNU and Linus Torvalds Linux kernel. Both people should be mentioned when talking about the creation of GNU/Linux OS.

  • @MrRyanian Plus, he's not that arrogant or egoistic, it's just his geeky sense of humor.

  • It's kind of funny watching this old interview and the part where he talks about desktops while using an ubuntu machine with compiz fusion.

  • No matter how smoothly the software runs, all software always needs to be adjusted eventually when the hardware is altered or upgraded. There is always someone trying to fix the software when it isn't even broken.

  • Reason #245 Why Linus Rules: 3:12 ....so I just made it awailable....

  • As awesome as Linus is, I'm extremely impressed by Charlie Rose. I've seen him intelligently interview everyone from David Foster Wallace to Jay-Z, and he always gets the best from them.

  • @benofoz agree

  • Linus Torvalds is awesome!

  • Though I love Linux, Linus seems like he is somewhat full of himself.

  • Contrary to Linus Torvalds opinion there are actually starving programmers. I think the public sector should employ more open source developers.

  • @MOBiL4u yes that's true. But that has nothing to do with open source. It's like saying that we close public schools because there are private schools that has to make a living. It's the big picture that comes first.

  • "the only reason I made it available on the internet was really.....it made so much sense"

  • This guy is awesome. But I really admire Mark Shuttleworth for using his wealth to bring Linux to consumers/average joe.

  • Linus Torvalds is more like Tesla than Edison. Edison was a thug.

  • Not without Richard Stallman without richard you wont be able to use linux at all

  • @edwardrendon You can use Linux without GNU.

  • @67576856666478964567 true, but for many ppl with a knowledge of linux basics, or technology with be worthless lol

  • @67576856666478964567 How would you compile the kernel?

  • @zainussami

Without gcc. There *are* C compilers that are not gcc.

  • @SolomonKull Now there are compilers that are not gcc, back then it was just GNU Tool Chain and porting Linux to any other compiler would waste time, might even destroy it :p

  • @Pepsifx357 Edison a thug? why?

  • @shadowpt I studied him in College. He wasn't necessarily a thug, more like the original gangster. He would hire local thugs to get what he needed done. When the fight for his AC power began he would send thugs to threaten Tesla, and he eventually executed an elephant with DC power to prove that it was dangerous. He used "hired hands" a lot to get his way. In short, he was a complete asshole. The only thing he actually invented was the phonograph.

  • @Pepsifx357 So in other words Edison was more like Gates is to Open Source? :D

  • @swejap1 Props to that analogy. I like it!

  • @Pepsifx357 Well said!!

  • @Pepsifx357, Agreed. Edison was a monopolistic, rent-seeking patent troll and a thug. Real innovators, like Linus Torvalds, share their creations with everyone in the world to enjoy and profit.

  • @Pepsifx357 That is the TRUTH! My Great Great Grand Father was Nelson Tillis and Edison and his redneck goons stole some of his work and land down in Fort Meyers.

  • Linus Torvalds and Richard Stallman are gods,

    GNU/Linux is the holy bible,

GNU Compliler Collection is the sword of the enlightment,

so LET`S PRAY FOR FREEDOM !!!

  • I have so much respect for this person!

  • Thank you Linus for the best server OS ever.

  • "That people did just not understand the concept of creating a program because you like programming." -- Linus Torvalds

Genius, idol, hero, I love this man.

  • thanks for this awesome interview, what year is it from?

  • 2001 its not hard to google

  • maybe I didnt want to google, ever thought about that?

  • 5:45 xD

  • when he said "its not just about h...." he was going to say hacking :P

  • Yes, it isn't just about hacking, it's also about using Knoppix to fix a broken Windows system.

  • I don't really mind, I'm a "hacker" myself. The word has a different meaning in this circle anyway,

  • I was more of criticizing Windows there. If by "hacking" you mean being able to touch the source code, then yes, that's what Linux is about.
