I saw a an old video that said this video was in response to false reports of an AIDS cure. "It's safe to Dance".......................and my conclusion " We can leave your friend's BEHIND" case...closed..LOL!
@WazzzupWill no you dont, all things considered it was a shit decade, 1981 and 1982 and some bits of 1983 were pretty cool.
The worst bit was 1984 to about 1988.
The acid house sound came about in 88 to rescue us so we didnt have to put up with stock, aitken and waterman hit factory cheese all day on every bloody radio station and in every bastard nightclub
Only nowadays in this decade its the awful shit churned out by simon cowell that has replaced the lowest common musical denominator..
@gordongate Well i think from 87 onwards the standard of music in the UK started to decline with Stock Aitken and Waterman. They churned out real cheap and cheesy songs big time and to be honest the music industry has never been the same since.
@TheGodParticle yup, although the rot set in about 1985 with the hit factories cheese anthem 'you spin me right round'
sign of things to come.
early 1990's were promising with the whole madchester sound but it turned into the dying gasp of the hacienda as the major labels tried to muscle in and polluted the whole scene with formulated 'indy' bands' and that louie walsh arsehole who started the whole shitty karaoke boy band scene we have suffered ever since.
@gordongate Well said, i remember that hit factory cheese and respect to you for remembering the decline. This cheap boyband crap is still comeing back now with take that, what next? boyzone.. to be honest i would like to kick louie walsh in the bollocks. Cheers

This is very typical of most English villages on a Saturday evening, Morris dancers and Midgits in olde jesters costumes roam the English countryside looking to entertain. Come to England and do the Safety Dance with the Locals.
None of the world's tunes and their videos enchanted me so much and greatly as this song+video. Back to 1996, I was getting an euphory every time when VIVA was running this videoclip. Listening to it was like an orgasm, I dreamed to get this song or record it on tape so I could get satisfaction from hearing it, but I had to spend all days on TV to catch ithis uncanny masterpiece.
I was a kid in the 80's. After all this time, I still don't get it. Safety dance? WTF is it? Why the hell did this become a hit song and cultural iconic song?
@Panthera0nca There wasn't any weird cult at all, it was a standard Pagan village, a very old , long lasting and popular religion. But yeah, there were definitely some pagan rituals in the video anyway, maypole dancing etc.
@Doctorkillbydeath87 it was during the commonwealth, the English puritan government prohibited music, dancing, using maypoles, and other such forms of entertainment.
Wonderful video to a great song. Love the combo of Merrie England, with a Quebecois Anakin-lookalike, a little guy and a lovely kooky blonde girl, all having a whale of a time and spreading joy! Every time I watch it it makes me smile!
Don't know if you're asking the question in all seriousness or not. Assuming that you really want to know...during the early 80s, some concert goers would "dance" very violently and some people actually got hurt in the process (think punk rock; think mosh pit). There isn't a "safety" dance per se; the song was an appeal to fans to have fun dancing without hurting others. True story.
didnt grow up in the 80's i had a freind who did make me watch it. now both me and him are annoying those we live with, with the video(for some reason they dont like it lol)
It's the same for me. I must have been six or seven when this video was popular but even then it really stuck out among the other stuff on MTV. I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but the girl with the Blonde hair in the beginning with the Brown dress on reminds me of Avril Lavigne, she has a smile just like hers!
