christianity is a text book example of the strong father figure..
and considering christianity has lead to crusades, inquisitions, witch hunts, slavery and brutal ethnic cleasning i think that supports his hypotesis beutifully...
the strong father figure leads to nothing but abuse.
I've seen a few videos of George Lakoff but this one is the best I've seen so far. These are psycho-social elements that are rarely talked about, because they are so deep. When I think about it from this standpoint, of the connection between parent-child and political positions, I can see my relationship with my family members differently. My father comes more from the disciplinarian standpoint. He's an interesting contrast because he's a leftist, I would say with violent tendencies.
don't get me wrong, i have seen abusive men try to negatively dominate their families & claim it's something positive, but in a true christian household, the father should also fear God & treat his family with love as the bible commands him to.
discipline is done for the child to build him or her up. abuse is nothing more than a form of 'venting frustrations' on the father's part & tears the child down. discipline has positive results.
it is the duty of the parent to teach a child how to act correctly. children don't know this instinctively, that's why they have parents.
i don't like how he equates strict father households who believe in discipline with abuse of women & children. true discipline has nothing to do with abuse. they are completely different, but this man is confusing the two because in both situations the husband is the head of the household.
The reality is that there are two sets of values, and *either can be okay*, when it comes to raising kids. (It is a *myth* that only one side of the political spectrum has problems with abuse.)
The important thing is consistency. Everyone knows, obeys, and enforces rules viewed as legitimate.
Conservative parents will "produce" kids who are good workers, disciplined and hard working.
Liberal parents will "produce" kids who are creative and sensitive.
"The industrial revolution stripped away many of the functions from the traditional family. Education went to the schools, care of the elderly went to the state, work was tranfrerred to the factory, and so forth...The family did not disappear after the industrial revolution. But if became smaller, took on more limited responsibilty, and lost much of its power vis-a-vis other institutions in society." -- Alvin Toffler
Let's examine bible god's family values! Notice how god says a woman isn't free to choose to stay with her own husband & kids: If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for 6 years. But in the 7th year, he shall go free, paying nothing. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone; but if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him kids, the woman and her kids shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free. [Ex. 21:2-6]
If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to go free in 7th year, paying nothing. If he comes alone, he is to go free alone;if he has a wife when he comes, she is to go with him. If his master gives him a wife and she bears him children, the woman and her children shall belong to her master; only the man shall go free. "But if the servant declares, 'I love my master/wife/children and do not want to go free,'then his master must pierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant 4 life. [Ex. 21:2-6]
You don't understand what the phrase "family values" means.
Imagine two flow charts. The EU version: each citizen is a member of a nation-state, the basic political unit. It cares & provides for you. You must do as it says, sacrifice for it, respect its authority to tell you how to live your life.
US version: it is the family, not the national govt, that is the basic unit, that cares for etc., & each family has the right to determine for itself what duties and privileges members have.
One year mat erniety leavel for each child? I think that is bogus..
If you want children badly enough, either find a partner who works different hours than you (That is what my parents did)
Or get your finances together and work towards being able to afford it..
Also, who pays for the leave? If it is on the employer, I picture this adding additional discrimination against young women, afteralll why higher HER if you might be forced to pay for her to do nothing that benefits you?
@zdenko1945 do not think it's all like pink and nice and fair here. there is a lot of corruption in Europe. A LOT! there is a lot of discrimination against poor countries, a lot of mistreatment and abuse of citizens from poor countries, there is a lot of slave labour brought in from the surrounding continents.
The election fraud is great here especially in the poor countries that are members of the EU.
The corrupt rich feed on the poor, just like any other place in the world.

@zdenko1945 No authoritarianism in the 'free education system' where teachers can't be fired right? And why only maternity leave, why no leave for fathers? (Oh yeah, because fathers are evil.) It's funny too how all of these 'anti-authoritarian' goals call for a more powerful and much more authoritarian government.
I beg to differ that there is nothing wrong with the "strict father" paradigm per se. Professor Lakoff's point that punitiveness is more likely to result in alienation and defiance than in cooperation is the truth. I speak from my own experience. If you beat your kid, don't expect your kid to die in the society you created.
Progressives cannot use empathy, cannot appeal to empathy in psychopath simply because there is nothing to appeal to, there is no empathy there.
Hence progressives need to use 'strict father' frames when dealing with significant subsection of people and with corporations. There is nothing wrong with the frame per se.
Even though the psychos are not able to experience empathy, they are able to exploit the empathy in others, therefore progressives should be able to use both frames: 'nurturing' to those who are capable to empathize and 'strict father' to psychos. Lakoff misses this second point.
Conservative agenda is built around psychopath outlook: 1) the psychopaths are indeed born with non-empathic personalities, and 2) the only restriction the psychos understand is punishment.
These values result in the religious, strict father model.
Lakoff fails to recognize that about 1 person in 40 is psychopath (see NY Times article by Daniel Coleman). ALL corporations are psychopaths due to corporate bylaws (see 'The Corporation'), hence they tend to attract the psychos to run them...
The slogan for the 2008 presidential campaign should be "Its About Representing The American Workforce, Stupid".
Remember the slogan in the 1992 presidential campaign, "Its the Economy, Stupid". The meaning was quality jobs for Americans, not bigger profits for big business!

A more balanced approach would be to be strict when it's appropriate and nurturant when it's appropriate.

How do you define "Liberal" vs "conservative"?
I assume you only mean when it comes to how they discipline their children?
PLUS, It's as though you think that being creative and sensitive is mutually exclusive to being hard working and disciplined...

"Family values" in USA : spreading hatred toward gays.
Family values in European Union:
1) One year maternity leave for each child
2) Ability to add your sick parent to your health insurance policy
3) Ability to obtain health care policy with "preexisting condition"
4) Free education system for everyone, even most poor kids
5) Politicians who do not talk about family values, but put their deeds where their mouth are.
AMERICANS ARE BUNCH OF HYPOCRYTES.

Thanks for your part to whole logical fallacy. Are illogical arguments another perk I might get from living in Europe?

Basically, anyone is capable of having children..
It sounds like places like europe want an easy way out
By shoving their responsibilities towards other people.
Now, I guess I am not sure EXACTLY how maternity leave works, maybe I speak from ignorance..
I would be for mandotory leave, WITH OUT PAY.
As in, they are legally gauranteed their jobs back..
