God doesn't think "you are awesome" as the definition of awesome applies to size ie. things such as the Grand Canyon. Put the Bible down for a sec if you can and pick up a dictionary. Thanks for watching!
@arghmeknee Hey! The Bible was not written for the unbeliever or the agnostic. It was written for people who are searching for a true knowledge of God. If that is you--great! If not, that is your privilege. Regardless, thanks so much for your awesome comment!
@ghike30 He did! There are those of us who choose to accept it and others who deny it. The Bible was written for men and women who want to believe. Maybe that helps explain things for you.
If Peter was the first pope why did he have a wife? If Popes are infallible, why does one pope change what a previous one said is "truth"? Wasn't there once a woman Pope? But today they won't let a woman be Pope. Didn't one Pope put the dead body of a previous Pope on trial and put his body in the court?! I'd say that popes were fallible not infallible. The Word of God is perfect. More people should try reading the Bible for themselves sometime.
I agree with Word centered. the church was not built on Peter. if Peter was the first pope, why does the Roman Catholic Church of today teach many doctrines that he never taught or did and that were not only disagreed with by Peter but many popes previous to the current one?
The Bible was written by bronze-age desert-dwellers who were afraid of the dark. Humans have two things that produce religion in nearly every culture, especially in its early stages: 1- fear of the dark; fear of the unknown. 2- And a deep ignorance (I'm not being insulting here), a genuine lack of knowledge of, say, pathogens and meteorology and nocturnal life forms. Knowledge destroys religion. Please, kids, GET AN EDUCATION! Don't waste your mind and your life on a bronze-age myth!
The question is, how did we get the biblical canon? Nowhere in the Bible is there an inspired table of contents.
The fact is, the Catholic Church compiled the New Testament canon at the council of Hippo in 393 AD.
Even Martin Luther admitted, "We are obliged to yield many things to the papists [Catholics]—that they possess the Word of God which we received from them, otherwise we should have known nothing at all about it."
1 Corinthians 16:15 I beseech you, brethren, (ye know the house of Stephanas, that it is the firstfruits of Achaia, and that they have addicted themselves to the ministry of the saints,)
The gospels, epistles & letters were assembled, canonized (declared inspired) placed together with the OT canonized books and preserved through the centuries thus in the 4th century, at the Synods of Hippo & Carthage, then the Council of Rome, and re-affirmed formally at the Coucil of Trent in the 16th century.
My point is, God appointed an earthy Authority to tell us precisely WHICH BOOKS ARE INSPIRED. The Bible didn't fall from heaven, leather bound with gold-guild pages.
It was put together, bound, and declared inspired by a visible Authority on earth. Christ appointed that Authority. Do you know who that Authority is?
Who do you suppose Jesus was speaking to when He said, "He who hears you, hears Me." He was giving someone the voice to speak in His place. He wasn't saying that people were to rely on their own interpretations of Sacred Scripture.
People need to understand what Scripture is saying.
The Catholic Church follows the apostolic tradition in following the Scriptures, not according to modern-day twisted translations, but as the Apostles and Early Church Fathers taught. God's laws do not change, nor do the meanings of His Word. Times change, and people change, but God does not.
Is that why there are now hundreds of denominations broken away from the original Catholic Church in the 16th century - all now preaching different doctrines and interpretations? Only One Church is still preaching the same doctrines today as in the 1st century.
Question: Who is Jesus speaking about in this verse?
Answer: His Apostles.
Jesus commissioned His Apostles as the first bishops of His Church.
You prove my point, that Jesus gave the words of God to His Apostles, to be taught after His Death & Resurrection. Continue reading the following verses!
I know you desire to reject the Authority that Christ established, but it is undeniable. Yep, we're a Church full of sinners, but we're working out our salvation in fear and trembling.
He gave His Apostles the Word of God, and the Authority to preach & teach it. He established a Church, and annointed the Apostles as the leaders of His Church.
Changing the subject to something as silly as head dress shows the weakness of your discussion.
Where in scripture does it ever say that Jesus Christ came to establish any church or denomination? Where in scripture is this Roman Catholic Church? Cardinals?
Mark 7:8 For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.
"You are Peter (Kepha) and upon this rock (kepha) I will build My church." "I give you the keys to the kingdom." "Whatsoever you bind on earth will be held bound in heaven, whatever you loose will be loosed." "He who hears you, hears Me." There's just a few for ya. :)
It is upon this ROCK (Petra). Jesus was referring to himself. Peter was "petros," a stone. Only a Petra could withstand the howling winds the adversary.
So, what verse has "pope," or "Roman Catholic," or "cardinal?"
In 1st century Greek (Koine Greek) the words "Πετρος" and "πετρα" were synonymous. You, my friend, are thinking of Attik Greek, where there would have been a distinction between those words.
Besides, the only reason Πετρος and πετρα are used is to appeal to the rock (f.) with a female ending (πετρ*Α*), and to Peter (m.) with a masculine ending (Πετρ*ΟΣ*).
Matthew is written in Koine Greek. Thus, Peter is indeed the rock of the Church in Matthew 16:18.
Peter would not have been a sufficient support had been alone. However, the Spirit was always with him in his decisions regarding faith and morals (like in Acts 15:7).
Also, Jesus promised Peter that, after he had been redeemed of his denials, Peter would have an unfailing faith in Luke 22:32.
Jesus also commanded Peter to "feed my sheep" in John 21:15-17.
On top of all that, Jesus told Peter,
"You are Rock, and on this rock I will build my Church."
So, when someone is reading the Scriptures and does not understand what the Lord is saying, is it a consolation to them that "The Scriptures interpret themselves"? What exactly do you mean by that, anyway? People have a need for understanding. How are they to understand the correct interpretation of Scripture if thousands of different "men of God" are giving contradicting interpretations?
So, you "teach people" how the Bible interprets itself.
But the Authority that Christ appointed is not to be listened to?
I don't have need to defend my Church, because Christ established It as the bearer of His Truth. He built upon rock. The gates of hell won't prevail against it, and neither will you.
I agree with Word centered. the church was not built on Peter. if Peter was the first pope, why does the Roman Catholic Church of today teach many doctrines that he never taught or did and that were not only disagreed with by Peter but many popes previous to the current one?
In John 4:24 Jesus Christ said "God is a Spirit." Spirit has no form, like air, right? In order for His Word to be written down, He needed to "inspire" men to write what He wanted written.
If it was purely divine dictation that all the books in the book should have the same writting style, yet this is not ture. Each author has his own writting style, this is evidence that God worked through them, allowing them to use their own style, but at the same time keeping them from error.

Same Bible today as 396 A.D.
Thanks to the Catholic Church.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed ...
All means all. You have a choice: Take God at His Word and receive His many benefits, or reject His Word and make a go of it on your own.
Even non-believers have a "crutch (as they accuse Christians)." It is their ideas or philosophies. My "crutch" is the Eternal God. Choose your wisely!

2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
If it is of no private interpretation no one dares interpret it. Not a denomination or a church, not a board of elders, no one.
Thank God it interprets itself!

Is the Roman Catholic church still preaching the same doctrines? Congratulations. Have you ever looked at your church's history?
Personally, I don't put "church tradition," "the early church fathers," or the words of a man speaking excathedra above what God says in His Word.
John 17:8 "For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me..." Those are the words I want, not the words of men.

It is mildly amusing to me how the Roman Catholics rush to defend their doctrines. For instance, how you believe that Peter was the "first Pope."
Peter was not sufficient a support to build "the Church" of which Christ is the head.
Matthew 16:18 ...and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.
The gates of hell will only not prevail against a sure foundation--Christ himself!
1 Corinthians 3:11 For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.

If someone were to tell me that my wife does not exist
I would not waste a single moment debating them.
I'd just look over at my wife, chuckle at their foolishness,
and move on the the next item.
When I tell a christian that their god doesn't exist, though,
s/he gets all worked up, starts spouting Bible verses,
attacks evolution, quotes famous preachers....
I wonder why that is...? ;=)
