  • This engine does pretty good for a v6. My step dad had a truck just like this, 2wd, 4.2, 5 speed, except it was an '06. It got over 20 mph driving in mountainous terrain. It has a good amount of power, but it still doesn't compare to the new 3.7 in the 2011 models.

  • Wow that's a really wide gap between 3 & 4...worse than my Ranger's 2 & 3. That's ok tho, because the 4.0 makes up for it. I've surprised a few people.

  • @QuickBurn70 its not too bad, 4th will still pick up pretty well at certain speeds. i surprise a lot of people actually. especially V8 trucks. and my buddy has a 06 ranger i believe with a 4L but its an auto and his 0-60 was 10.1 seconds.. i was riding with him and clocked it. my truck was about 9.2 before i got my tuner. i moved to high elevation so even with the tuner, it is slower than it was with just the intake at lower elevation unfortunately.

  • @timmypstyle 10.1 for a Ranger? Might be a 3.0L then...or he was going easy on it. Or it's not running right lol... 4.0L Rangers run less than 9 sec, auto or manual, ever since they switched to the DOHC 4.0L (2000 or 2001 I think). Maybe his is an older pushrod version too

  • @QuickBurn70 no his is an 06 i think...i know its newer than an 04 for sure. its a 4.0L ext cab 4x4 with a cold air intake on it. he floored it and it was 10.1. he used to have a 96 ranger 4.0L ext cab 4x4 with a lift, not sure how much, bigger tires, intake, tuner, and a magnaflow cat back exhaust and it was quicker than his 06 but not by much i know for a fact it is a 4.0L and it is either a 05, 06, or 07. one of those years for sure. and he only had about 35k on it when he bought it

  • Not a huge fan of the 4.2L. I've been trying to get rid of mine ever since it hit 94K miles. Blew the lower intake manifold, 95K lost my throwout bearing, ever since I've had multiple ECU electrical issues.

  • @zapityzapzap it depends on the year. if its 97 or 98, they had hydrolock problems. after the 2nd half of 98 they were fine. this is my 2nd 4.2L, first was my 04 heritage f150. the 08 sounds better inside and out and is quicker even tho it is heavier. th e04 had a 3.08 rearend and the 08 has a 3.55. but the 08 weighs almost 500Lbs more and it was still quicker with just the same intake that i bought for my 04. now i have my tuner so my 08 would blow the 04 away.

  • @timmypstyle mine is an 02. It weighs about 400lbs more from accessories like bumpers and headache rack. Blew the lower before I added all of the weight. 3.55 rear end, M5R2 tranny. Where I live, all of the 4.2's blow the lowers at some point or another, no matter what year. Best I can figure is they don't like weather extremes.

  • @zapityzapzap i donno, i lived in Erie, Pennsylvania and just moved to colorado in july 2010, they shouldnt be bad since they are technically a 3.8L motor so mustangs and thunderbirds and others should have the same problem. i cant really say you are wrong tho, my 04 was bought with 24k and traded in with 44k, my 08 was bought new and only has 45k on it now so i havent had as much wear and tear on either of them but i do/did run them hard. my 08 has a tuner and intake and i drive it like a Z28

  • @timmypstyle If you actually look, the intake manifolds are different on the 3.8 and 4.2. From what I can tell, the 3.8 has never been plagued by a pressed steel fitting in an aluminum lower intake manifold. The steel and aluminum heat and cool at different rates. This can present severe issues when its 70 one day, and -2 the next.

  • @zapityzapzap im sure you are right, but so far so good lol. like i said i drive mine pretty hard, its been to the track 4 or 5 days running at least twice each day. havent gone since i got my tuner tho so ill have to see how it does. i used to have my 96 T/A and every vehicle since then has been driven like it lol. even my 97 2.3L ranger and my 1990 chrysler 5th avenue, except the 5th ave was a sleeper for what it was, 3.3L V6 with 147hp and like 183Lb-Ft, it wasnt fast but it would move

  • @timmypstyle what exhaust is on that thing? my boss has an 02 4.2, regular cab longbed he tows a trailer with, i know it's got 2.5" stock single exhaust but doesn't sound that good, it's only an auto but it tows the trailer full of lawn equipment including two industrial lawn tractors no problem

    i'd like a short bed 5spd 4.2, with 3.55 gears and a turbo muffler i bet it'd be a quick truck

  • @snakesonaplane2 exhaust is completely stock but is 2.75", and my intake changes the tone slightly. i now have my tuner and it sounds slightly better than it does in the video. this one is a reg cab shortbed 2wd with a 3.55limited slip rearend and a 5spd. and you gotta remember, the V6s now are close to the power of the older big V8s. this engine is 202hp and 260Lb-Ft, your bosses is 252Lb-Ft but still 202hp. my old 78 f150 with a 351 was about 165hp and no idea what the torque was.

  • @timmypstyle my TBI 305 in my Sierra pulls harder still, has less than 200hp but has more torque than a V6 and the torque max is at a lower rpm too, until the Eco Boost came out no V6 made as much torque as a small block V8, even the 302, 305 and 318 with older style heads (not Ford's 87-93 Mustang, Chevy's Vortec and Dodge's Magnum) all make more torque than the newer V6's, the 4.2, 4.3 and 3.7 are good engines but can't pull like a V8 can, the numbers are lower

  • @snakesonaplane2 i dont think yours pulls harder...unless you mean more weight. if you mean acceleration then no. my truck pulls harder than my friends 04 reg cab shortbed 4.8L silverado with 285hp and over 300Lb-Ft. and also is close to his 06 reg cab shortbed 5.3L silverado Z71...and the 4.7L engine in my girlfriend's 06 ram is only 40hp and 40Lbft more than mine. they arent that different except my V6 cant pull much weight. its rated for 5500Lbs i believe

  • @timmypstyle the TBI 305 is rated at 175hp and 265ft/lbs while his 02 4.2 is rated at 200hp and 250, but mine also has the advantage of being a 5spd while his is an auto so mine is slower but it can pull more, plus i have an intake and exhaust on my truck but soon it'll have a roller block Vortec 350 in it, also the 4.8 with the 5spd is a great combo, putting all that power to the ground an in 05 all GM trucks got e-fans for more power, i may swap a 4.8 or 5.3 in my truck, LS motors kick ass

  • pleaseee... my f150 woulda went by 105-110 already

  • @MikeNJess3409 is yours a V8? my 08 is limited at 100mph until i get my SCT programmer this week with custom tunes. i can raise the speed limiter with it. plus like i said before, this was 0-60 in 9.6 but i can do it in about 9.0-9.2. its just harder to shift when the camera is blocking the gauges and the camera screen is a little delayed so i cant go by it either. this is a 4364Lbs truck with a V6. its not so bad. ran the 1/4 in 16.9378@81.66mph.

  • @timmypstyle Even though a well trained ear doesnt need a tach to tell him where to shift. I dont need a tach to tell my when to shift my 4runner. I just listen to the motor. I just love the sound of truck v6s though, I like how yours sounds too!

  • @Motorfordtoyota yeah, this is my 4th manual transmissioned vehicle. started out with a 78 f150 351 with no tach. just had to listen to it also. then my 97 2.3L ranger had a tach, my 04 heritage f150 didnt but i bought one after about a year. then my 08 has one.

  • @MikeNJess3409 lol i just read that you have a 5.4L? wow my V6 f150 is almost as fast as your V8 f150.....ran into a guy who had a tuner on his 5.4 at the track and was running 15.9@87mph where mine ran 16.9378@81.66 and a 17.02@82.26mph. and his was tuned with a CAI and flowmaster. mine was stock with just a CAI. and i am getting a tuner with custom tunes from the same place he did. if his wasnt tuned he would have probably been about even with mine.

  • only bc i have mine moded

  • This truck is actually pretty fast, faster than my 2006 Lexus RX, I drove my friends 2001 F-150 4.2L with the air conditioning all the way on and it hauled.

  • @tyIerz06 thanks. i think my 0-60 is about 9-9.2 seconds. it is slower on the videos becasue i have to look at the screen to see what rpms im at from the camera blocking the gauges. the camera screen is slightly delayed so i try to account for the delay but still dont hit the mark. but without anything blocking the gauges i think 9.2 is what i get

  • damn the sound of the engine is really tense u must have a rly good cold air setup on it cause idont hear alot of V6 f150s with that kind of intense sound

  • @Mustangmike232 the cold air intake is a K&N that i bought for my 04 heritage 4.2L i had. i took it off when i traded it in and installed it on my 08. i had to rig it a little since the mass airflow sensor is different and also i couldnt use the L-bracket/engine air guard that came with it. also i bought a tube that i put behind the split from the upper/lower bumper and ran it up to my filter. it works a little but but only at like 40mph+.

  • yeah mabey a little over. i have the same set up. excepet i have true dual supper 44 flowmasters and a k&n air filter

  • no way thats fast is 5k the rev limit?

  • @kyleevo1127 do you mean that there is no way it is that fast? sorry dont know what you are saying. only part i get is the question about the limiter. and no, it is actually limited at 5200rpms. 5000 is pretty much the best place to shift because the engine seems to lose like 1/2 its power after 5000 so its actually quicker if you shift early at 5k. my 04 heritage's limiter was 5400rpms and didnt lose its power at 5k

  • 4.2 are sweet

  • @bennnnnnnv48 yup, they are pretty badass

  • @bennnnnnnv48

Dunno, stock with 3.55 gears, my 07 F150 longbed is about as fast in the 1/4 as Sally Struthers. I just got some 4.10 gears, but haven't had them put in yet. But the 21-23mpg hwy I get is sweet though.

  • @fubecabr my 08's quickest run at the track with JUST a cold air intake with a homemade helper tube( to give it cooler air instead of the engine bay's air) and it ran a 16.9378@81.66mph. but i went to the track again in june and couldnt hit the 16s again. best that day was 17.1048@82.26mph. i never broke into the 16s that day but all my speeds were faster. i had the one above and 2 more with 17.2992@81.81mph and a 17.0524@81.96mph

  • @timmypstyle best time was 17.0524 for that day but 82.26mph was my best trap speed

  • @timmypstyle

Anything trapping less than 100mph is slow, IMAO. My other car, a 16 year old grocery getter, does 13.9@100mph.

  • @fubecabr I agree but a 82mph for a v6 full sized truck isnt bad at all

  • @timmypstyle

Ford needs to put the 3.5L motor into the F150. It should get the truck into the 15s in the 1/4.

Having said that, the 4.2L is no slouch. I just towed a 16x7 tandem axle cargo trailer that weighed 6k-7k lb from WA to AK. It had no problem maintaining fwy speeds on flat ground and slight inclines and I even passed quite a few uhauls. The 5spd + 4.10 gears is PERFECT for towing.

I also highly recommend installing the90s taurus or mark viii electric cooling fan.

  • @fubecabr they are putting in the 3.5L ecoboost. it actually has the highest tow rating which is the same as the 6.2L. also they are going to have a 300hp 3.7L V6 as the base. so it wil be 3.7L V6, 5L V8, 6.2L V8 and 3.5L TTV6 for the engine order. i towed a 4-5k uhaul from PA to CO last month. going 80-85mph most of it. up hills i had to downshift but it still stayed there. got 13.8mpg with 3.55s and a 5spd

  • @timmypstyle

Ya, they've been talking about putting the 3.5/3.7 in it, but where's the beef? The Ford Cyclone engine was released in 2006. The 3v 4.6L was pretty sweet...in 2005. It's 2010 now. They also need a baby powerstroke that gets 25mpg. It'd blow away the competition. They need the new powerplants...now.

    .

  • @fubecabr the new powerplants are for 2011. search for 2011 f150 engines. also with the exhaust on my truck, i dont like flowmasters. every one ive heard sounds like crap on a 4.2L. i like magnaflows. better sound and stainless steel.

  • @fubecabr also i am going to get a SCT tuner with custom tunes as my next mod. then maybe efans or exhaust. with the exhaust tho, i dont want anything to sound bad. i think the stock tone is the 4th best ive heard for the 4.2L

  • @timmypstyle

I'd recommend you take the truck to an exhaust shop and have them make you a dual exhaust with flowmasters. As long as you have resonators, it won't sound bad. It'll be quiet at idle and cruising and loud when you open it up.

  • @fubecabr well i ordered my sct tuner a few days ago. and i am going back to the track afterwards to see how much time i drop. with just a K&N intake, my best time was 16.9378@81.66mph. but my fastest speed was 82.26mph in the 1/4.

  • @fubecabr what type of car is your "16 year old grocery getter"?

  • @timmypstyle

95 maxima. Stock, it does 0-60 in 6.7s and the 1/4 in 14.9s.

  • @fubecabr yeah maximas have always had a decent amount of power. my 96 trans am i had 6 years ago was 0-60 in 5.8 and a 14.0 1/4. they were rated 5.6 to 60 but mine had 60k on it and also it was an auto

  • just so you all know, this is back when i didnt know how to launch it right. now i know how to do it better but still not perfect. it is a bit quicker than this now. gotta get a video sometime. i am guessing it is now 9.0-9.2 or so.

  • just a question....on this f150 if you have the truck in gear and take your foot off the clutch does it stall or does it just creep along????

i drove a ranger the other day where you can just release the clutch with out gas and it goes along....

  • i never tried but i think it would stall. the 4.2 is a very low powered engine at low rpms. it almost stalls out even when you give it the gas sometimes. my 4 cylinder 97 ranger was the same way. im guessing the one you tried was a 4.0L V6 because they have a pretty good low end torque band. but if its not it would have to do with the idle speed and also since it is fuel injected.

  • yes....thankyou!!

  • I can do that with my clutch on my 3.0L V6 Ranger Edge but I do have a 4.10 rear end.

  • seriously i would have never guessed a 3L would do that. but with 4.10 gears i could see it. my f150 has 3.55LS which is the lowest the V6 f150s go for 08. only have 3.31 and 3.55. my 04 heritage f150 had 3.08s but the newer ones i think are too heavy for the 3.08s

  • What size tires do you have? I have 3.55s in my '97 F150 with 29 inch tall 255/65R16s, and my gears are slightly shorter than that. I haven't done any driving lately where I run any of the gears to the redline, but I'm almost dead-certain I wouldn't be able to get 30 mph out of first. And, my truck will take off in first without touching the throttle and will idle along in first, even up slight grades. I did that just last night when in heavy mall traffic.

  • i think 235/65/R17. not sure about the 65. it moight be 60 but i am pretty sure it is 65. 97 was the first year for the 4.2, 4.6 and 5.4 engines. and also the transmissions may have had different gearing than mine. i am pretty sure they dont have different gearing on the V6 models but not positive. i am assuming you have a V6 tho, right? thats just weird to me that it doesnt stall on yours. the 4.2L is so low powered at low rpms. if i am driving at 1500 it sounds like it is struggling to move.

  • Yeah, mine's a 4.2. A 235/65R17 would be the same height as a 235/70R16 which mine originally had, 29 inches tall. My new tires are actually 29.1" tall. Must be transmission gearing. The only mods I have are the Gott's mod and port matched upper and lower intake manifolds. I also have the same body configuration as you do: regular cab, stepside, 4x2, 5 speed.

  • well my truck's peak torque is at a higher rpm and my peak HP is at a lower rpm than yours. yours being geared like mine and having slightly more low end torqu may be why yours does it. my only mods are a K&N cold air intake and a helper tube kind of like the gotts, going from behind my front bumper to my filter but it is an open, cone filter. my truck is a reg cab, reg box(styleside), 4x2, 5 speed. but mine weighs more than yours also by maybe 450-500Lbs.

  • @timmypstyle Before you added the intake was yours really slow? I have the same truck and it is dangerously slow. Even took it to the dealer where I bought it new and they said nothing is wrong, they are really slow now due to mpg demands. I traded in a 1998 with the same setup and it was MUCH faster than my 2008

  • i just took my truck to the track last week, best run out of 2 was a 17.58@80.37mph. that was with a very dirty air filter on my cold air intake. i cleaned it the next day and i am going back tonight so hopefully i get a better time. i definitely felt a difference after i cleaned it so...im hoping to break 81mph this time

  • update on the 1/4 time. i went again that night and ran 2 runs. 1st was a 17.0475@81.08mph, second run was better at 16.9378@81.66mph which is the best so far. going again next spring when it opens up again. this time i get to race my buddy's truck. he had a run in with a guard rail a week before we were gonna go so his truck was in the shop while we went. he took a video of my 16.9378@81.66mph and i posted it on youtube. check it out altho the time isnt really shown. he didnt know how to zoom.

  • i do have the slips for proof right in front of me, i raced a dodge ram and had a quicker run time but lost because of my reaction time. i had a slightly late start because i had to roll up my window.

  • i just raced my friend's 04 siverado from a roll of about 50mph and i got him once and he got me twice but one he had a jump on me because i was in 5th instead of 3rd, he caught me off guard. the one i won i got the jump on him but he was counting for the start of the race. i went on 3, he didnt for some reason but that still counts as a win since he was counting.

  • Not a bad video timmy! You truck doesn't run bad for a v6. Some day i'm gonna get a 0-100 video of my dad's 99 F150 v6.

  • well i have a vid on here of my 04 heritage which is the same style as your dad's. i know for a fact the f150 with the V6 was rated at 10.2 seconds to 60mph with an auto. i got 9.58 with my 04 and this one is about 9.8 and is almost 500Lbs heavier. so your dad's will be about 10 if it is stock or about 9.5 if he has an intake but if he has more than just an intake i'd be interested to see what it will do.

  • My dad's truck is completely stock except for an exhaust and yea i've timed it at about 9.6 to 60mph also. What type of exhaust do you have on your truck?

  • mine is stock for now. i am still looking on youtube for systems that sound good with the 4.2L. only found 1 muffler and a few whole exhaust systems. muffler was a flowmaster and the exhausts are all gibson racing. other than that i really havent heard any i like. some sound great at idle but when you are driving they are crap and some are the otehr way around. hard to find ones that are good for both

  • im gonna be taking it to the track sometime with my friend who wants to race me with his 04 silverado reg cab shortbed 2wd with a 4.8L and an auto. he thinks my truck is faster which it is but only till i shift into 2nd which i think he will pass me easily after that. he just has trouble with traction off the line so if he spins i might actually get him but i think it would be close.

  • Listen to that engine roar!!!
