  • Wow. I just realized I really hate Solor now. He's such a wimp. I actually don't fully blame Gamzatti for what happened. She's not purely evil; she is genuinely in love with the IDEA of being in love with Solor, and she only vows to kill Nikiya because Nikiya tried to kill her first. Personally, I think a bit of the blame lies with everyone.

  • i love how gamzatti just appears at 2:22 its like a horror movie for nikiya!

  • This was absolutely divine. The costumes are to die for, Guerin and Platel are both beautiful not only physically but spiritually as well - they truly express passion and anger, especially Guerin. And the music is sublime - I haven't heard the original Minkus score, but Lanchberry did a magnificent job translating it to fit the original as close as possible...it's my favorite of all the ballet scores.

  • J'adore cette scène et je trouve que Guerin et Platel sont excellentes!

  • the face of gamzatti at 00:24 is like "oh no, she is so beautiful! deam it!" lol

  • ROFL ya got that right XD

  • i don't understand this scene.. can someone explain me?

  • gamzatti heard that nikiya and solor are in love. she calls nikiya to her and asks her if it is true, and nikiya says it is. then gamzatti tells her that she and solor are betrothed, and tries to bribe nikiya to leave him with jewels, but nikiya refuses. she is very upset, and goes after gamzatti with a daggar, but gamzatti's handmaid stops her. nikiya leaves, and gamzatti says she will die.

  • beautiful stage performance!

  • I don't think by placing her hands on her shoulders it's a gesture of chastity.

I feel it's saying "I am your servant" or in respect to royalty more in the lines of that.

Because nikiya does that in the begining to the high bramin and during the dance and then here in this scene again.

Even the sevant of Gamzatti does it.

  • ok that was beautiful. so emotional so real...almost. loved it!

  • Mii name is Nikiya!!!! How ever i would like to kno which one of these dancers are Nikiya

  • Nikiya is the dancer in brown and gold.

  • What exactly is Gamzatti saying to Nikiya? I get the general idea and I've studied some ballet mime, but I really don't understand all the gestures.

  • Gamzatti is saying she is going to marry the warrior. Nikiya says he promissed her his love, in some versions in the sacred fire. At the end her gesture means that "I am going to kill her."

  • Oh I HATE GAMZATTI!! She is one evil BITCH!! Poor Nikiya.

  • Hi Light

I love Gamzatti. It's a great part. Have a look at Alexandrova and Lopatkina and also Alexandrova with Zakharova. Nothing would happen without her.

  • Hi adballet, just to let you know - it's the character that I hate. Forget about the dancing, Gamzatti is a horrible person - she's very vain and ruthless, she lusts after Solor and she murders Nikiya because she's jealous of Solor's love for her, even she's not really in love with Solor herself. So do you see why I don't like her? In every story, there has to be a character that you don't like, you know what I mean?

  • Yeah, I know what you mean, but I don't see it quite like that.

Gamzatti's father arranges the marriage to Solor and she quite likes him. Then she finds out the story about Nikiya. however Nikiya is not supposed to go around having lovers. She is a temple dancer and if I'm not mistaken she has a chastity vow. Besides reminding Nikiya of that, which doesn't work, she gets desperate and begs, she tries to bribe her which doesn't work either.

  • Continuing

Then she gets really angry because this woman is really trying to mess up her marriage. Then Nikiya amost stabs her. After that she swears to kill her. Apparently murder and arranged marriages was no big deal at those times. I really think what the guy did is bad. When she's dying he walks away with Gamzatti. What do you think of this point of view?

  • Gamzatti gets angry because she sees Nikiya as a threat but she doesn't decide to kill Nikiya until after Nikiya attacks her. And murder was a big deal if you murdered a member of a temple. You would be in serious trouble with the gods and suffer their anger and wrath. The gods kill Gamzatti as punishment for murdering Nikiya when they destroy the temple. She dies knowing she was not loved by the man she lusted after and that she murdered an innocent woman out of jealousy and vainty.

  • Solor is in a situation where he is torn between true love and duty. He only agrees to marry Gamzatti for the sake of the Rajah's mercy for can you imagine what would have happened to him if he rejected her? Sadly he fails to do the right thing when offered the hand of someone he does not love. He fails to stand up to the Rajah and suffer the consequences of choosing Nikiya over Gamzatti. That is why he turns away when Nikiya is dying he is afraid to suffer the Rajah's consequences.

  • Yeah so if Nikiya's a temple dancer? The gods don't seem to be angry at her for falling in love. Maybe it's because they want their servants to be happy. And besides, if Nikiya actually did give up Solor for the jewels that Gamzatti offers her, do you have any idea how shallow that would make her? Because she remains true to her love for Solor when offered riches in exchange to give him up, that makes her strong.

  • Gamzatti doesn't really kil her. Before Gamzatti vows to kill her, the Rajah vows to kill her in front of the High Bramin and he's more involved in the situation than Gamzatti with the bouquet. Also the High Bramin offers her the antidote, Nikyia grabs it but when she sees Solor walking out with Gamzatti while she's dying she gives up on drinking it and dies. She actually kills herself by not drinking the antidote because she realizes he doesn't care.

  • No no no Nikiya doesn't kill herself! Both the Rajah and Gamzatti kill her because they are both involved in the plot. They both send the basket of flowers to Nikiya and when she points the finger at Gamzatti she doesn't deny it. In the gods punish everybody who is responsible for Nikiya's death. Nikiya did not kill herself she just rejected the oppurtunity to save her life which is not the same as committing suicide.

  • I agree they were both involved, the Rajah and Gamzatti. But Nikiya dies because she wants to and the reason is because of Solor walked out on her while she was facing death. Would you have done that if you loved someone? AND I LOVE THIS BALLET TOO.

  • Yes I know Nikiya dies cuz she chooses to when she's given a chance to be saved. But also when the High Brahmin offers the antidote he offers her it on condition that she renounce her love for Solor and be his instead. But she remains true to her love for Solor and chooses to die rather than live without him. And yes I would do the same if I loved someone but do remember that it was the Rajah and Gamzatti who set that snake on her.

  • I do agree about not accepting the bribe for Solor's love. I still disagree about the chastity vow. She's not allowed to have lovers nor to get married. The Gods don't only kill Gamzatti, they also kill Solor for the betrayal. I also disagree about the lust. It's not only lust, she was engaged to him.

But I think you are right about murder being a big deal if it was against temple people. In any event, Gamzatti gives us a lot to talk about even if some of us don't like her.

  • Well I do suppose I sounded a little over the top when I said lust. I meant that Gamzatti doesn't love Solor she just wants him to belong to her. And I don't know about any chastity vows cuz I don't know a lot about Indian religion. And I do that the gods kill Solor too cuz they're angry with him for betraying Nikiya but that also makes it look as though there aren't any chastity vows doesn't it?

  • The whole thing is messed up. Do you remember at the beginning the High Bramin wants her too? He offer his helmet as if giving up his position and she places her hands on her shoulders? This is a gesture of chastity. She is saying she can't accept him because of her vow. As I understand, he also has a chastity vow but it seems that emotions were going wild there. One more thing to defend Gamzatti. Nikiya is a threat to her marriage, and a really serious threat. Even dead.

  • Well that's actually not true. Nikiya rejects the High Brahmin because of his place not her own. She rejects him cuz he is a man of god. Sure Nikiya ignores any vow she has made to be Solor if they are any that is. And Nikiya is not a threat she was never a threat until Gamzatti imagined her to be one. Sure if Nikiya was not murdered she probably would have locked up herself away from the world in her grief over losing Solor. Do you not think so?

  • I think she rejects the High Bramin because she doesn't like him at all but she's ready to make any exceptions for her love. But both of them have religious reasons not to be involved in worldly relationships. They live in the temple and they are not supposed to mess around with each other. However the gesture she makes to him at the beginning does mean chastity. Also, if they didn't murder her we wouldn't have the GOURGEOUS Kingdom of the Shades. How could we live without it?

  • Oh I know I love the Kingdom of the Shades as well. And maybe Nikiya does reject the High Brahmin cuz she does not like him. But we all know that she also rejects him cuz she's in love with Solor. OK the thing I do not like Gamzatti she, the Rajah and the High Brahmin are the villians of this story and the story is about Nikiya cuz the title 'La Bayadere' means 'The Temple Dancer' and she's the temple dancer it is talking about.

  • Yeah, but I don't like what Solor did. The High Bramin is in love with Nikiya, the Rajah wants to marry his daughter with a war hero and Gamzatti likes that idea and him. Everything conspired against Nikiya. Everybody abused their power. And Nikiyas's love, beauty and kindness was not enough to keep her alife. Maybe that's why we like so much this story because this is rue to these very days.

  • I don't like what Solor did either but he did regret it big time. The story is about a beautiful temple dancer who is in love with a noble warrior but becomes a victim to her jealous rival and the High Brahmin. But of course it does have a happy ending because Solor and Nikiya are reunited forever in the afterlife.

  • Oh sorry I left the word 'with' in that sentence. I meant to say - Sure Nikiya ignores any vow she has made to be with Solor.

  • Mademoiselle Platel who is now director of the "école de danse" (dance school)of POB is the heir of three centuries of art of the pantomime (The school was based in 1711) She is remarkable in the pantomime and his partner is also very brilliant.

Yes she has him slap really but it is further to an agreement in rehearsal to look more of lived.

  • Estas dos fenomenales bailarinas lograron tenerme todo el tiempo con los pelos de punta!!!!!

Acá en mi país ahora están pasando por la tv, un documental sobre esta puesta de Nureyev, que es magnífica.

  • oh no she didn't slap her!

  • Brilliant!

  • this acting part is really really good!!!
