It's something to do with the checkpoint system Nintendo uses to track where everyone is. It gets messed up when you do the shortcut, so you have to go back to the mine exit and then turn around and go forwards again. I have no idea why it works like that. But if I don't go back, as soon as I cross the finish line, it'll undo the shortcut.

Ah... I didn't write that. So I'll explain here. Simply put, I realised how the other ultra shortcuts worked was to trigger checkpoints behind the starting line WITHOUT crossing the start line backwards. So I figured jumping over to that cliff would work (and it did :P)
