TOO cute!!! I'm getting an 8 week old Westie in a few days and would love to be able to teach her these cute tricks! Very impressive that she's only 12 weeks old! Tips as to how to I can get her to catch on so fast? :)
Wow you did a great job training Rosie! She is so cute! I have a 8 week old puppy, Teddy, and I am taught him to to sit, lay down and shake in a week. He is a bit slow at times. Any suggestions?
Your westie is adorable...I taught mine many of those tricks too...except after I taught him "stick em up" I also taught him "BANG" and he'd lay down like he was dead....cutest dog ever....
@naomifog Rose thinks she is in trouble when I tried to teach her bang, so didn't do it. I will say your dead and have her lay on her side until I tell her OK!
Hi, we are getting westy puppy next month and I am amazed how well trained is your dog. I was wondering do you have any advices on how to start training the dog when you first get it? Thank you in advance
what a clever girl. She is soo cute. My Ringo is just over a year, and the love of our family's life. Wish I had started tricks earlier. What an inspiration. I want another one already. PS we don't clip him like a typical westie, just the undercoat and around the eyes and bum. He is way cuter than most.... I think
my dogs so naughty! hes 5 years old now, hes a westie to predigree and everything, yet its taken him so long to learn so few things. its horrid! hes always biting me and growling at my mum, but she wont take him to a dog trainers and we dont have time anymore :(
i have a puppy westie, 20 week's old, and i still live with my mum and dad and yonger brother and sister and he is quite a handfull because he dose not walk on the leed he always want's to go back home and he has learned sit and give me paw and to do his pee's and poo's outside but it is gust the walking we need help with ,got any tip's (please )
That's amazing! We had a westie puppy and he was so difficult to train. He actually got out once and never came back cause he never learned to come :( but good for you! It's better to train early and you seem to have a good handle on this dog!
She knows all of that at 12 weeks? Wow. It took me a year to teach my westie sit, paw, down, over (agility training), come, wait, down, up and clap. And they are just the basics, next i'm gonna teach him round and rollover. He already does these things, but not on command, any advice?
This is impressive! I got my baby girl Westie (Ellie) 4 days ago (she's just over 8 weeks old) and I'd like to know HOW you got your darling to be so non-hyperactive! At the moment Ellie is just so excited when she's awake it's hard to get her to settle to concentrate (even when I constantly praise her during the rare quite moments) I have managed to work in 'fetch' and 'come', and sort of 'sit' (before she's allowed out of her playpen) but do you have any tips/advice? Greatly appreciated =)
i'm soooo sorry for your loss, but on the bright rose marie is ver adorable!! i have a yorkshire terrier and its true they really do bring joy into your life!
wow! your dog is adorable! I have an 8 weeks old shih tzu. I've been trying to teach her tricks and so far, she had just learned how to sit and stand on command. when I call her with her name, I need to clap my hands or stomp my feet to get her attention. I wanna teach her more tricks, can you tell me what should I do for her to listen to me. She hasn't been listening to me lately coz she gets distracted really fast. so yeah, any suggestions will do. thanks. looking forward on your reply.
I got a westie, now it's 6years old, but i've tried to train it for like 5 years (stopped last year, since i didn't think that it helped at all), but my westie is a male a it can't walk without leash, and it can't play with other males, because then it wants to be the leader dog.... that allways turns out to be a fight... how can i train my dog not to be like this, and make it walk no-leash??

What a clever little Westie girl. Reward based training clearly works here, but it's a combination of the trainer (who clearly knows her stuff) and the puppy. You are one very lucky lady to have such a beautiful little Westie. Love. x
My westie is 6 now and all she can do is sit lol. she's always been stubborn so we gave up training her when she was about one, she wont even eat dog food which again she hasnt done since we got her ¬_¬ oh well, i love her :)
@FuyumiPopo when my dog would bark(not on command)i would say 'speak' while he's barking & say 'good boy' & give him a treat straight away after he barked. i just kept doing that until he understood that when i say speak, he's supposed to bark. there might be other ways of teaching a dog to speak, but i find this way the easiest. they'll learn to associate the word you say with the trick. hope it helps :)

I bought the book: GETTING STARTED: CLICKER TRAINING FOR DOGS-by KAREN PRYOR it came with a clicker and flash cards and a book, about $19.00 at the pet store. I use hot dogs for treats and tear off a very small (1/2 pea size) piece with my fingernail. I found that if I keep the clicker in my right hand and the treats in my left hand and give her the treats with my right hand she does not focus on the left/treat hand.
Thanks for replying so quickly.. I've tried using a clicker. But he just doesnt respond.. He absolutely does not hear us unless he wants to :( The only response we're getting to him in regards to training is by saying "no" and "good boy". He understands the latter very well lol. But even "no" takes a few times. How did you get Rose to listen to you before you trained her?
@bounciebean before you can use the clicker with training, the dog needs to know what the 'click' means.i had to teach my dog the clicker means food :) get some treats (all different sorts is better so your puppy doesnt loose interest.peices of cheese, different treats, meats) & the clicker. you have to 'click' & then give him a treat & keep doing that until his full attention is on u
@bounciebean eg. when he looks at you 'click' & treat him. so he learns to listen & pay attention to you. try to make training sessions short 10-15 mins becaue it'll become frustrating for both you and your puppy. sorry its a little late, hope it helps :)
@rtwilliams83 why would you teach your dog all these awsome tricks and then feed it something so unhealthy like hot dogs. Why wouldn't you use chicken or something like that. Hot dogs are terrible for humans to eat so i can only imagine what they would do to a small dog like that.
@bounciebean i dunno wether he can lie down but you can do a method called the tunnel method have your leg low enough so to get under the dog has to lie down put a treat at the other side of your leg and when he lies down say down or what you waqnna say and then treat him
My Westie Lizzie is about 7 and when she was young we taught her to ring a bell attached to the door handle by a string when she needs to go to the bathroom too. Before we got Liz of our Westie breeder she warned us that male westies are more dominant and are harder to train because of their independent attitudes. And they are known to be picky about where they do their business. (She does think that when our cat is outside its a good time to ring the bell haha)
Crap... My Westie, Sugar, is almost 2 years (she turns on September 10th) and she can't do any of those tricks. Do you have any tips? Especially with potty training.
its a bit easier to train a 2 years old dog because they can listen properly and can't be easily distracted from the things surrounding them because they got used to it. But the very first thing you should teach your pet is weather they know their name or not. because if they don't know their own name then you'll have difficulty teaching her tricks. :) i hope it helps :))
I use Nature's Recipe Training Treats from Pet'smart are perfect. when I reach for the container Marget sits down ready fro training time. Small pieces of balogna or hot dog are good, too but she seems to start licking my finger and stops focusing. Anything small and easy to chew, hard treats didn't work for me.
Thank you so much, this video is priceless and Rose Marie was my inspiration!I Soon after watching this 3 months ago I stopped procrastinating so I now have a 6 month old Westie Margret-Mary. She is so smart, loves everyone, has learned a few tricks and even understands about 30words! She is a handful at times just because she wants to be a real dog but the rewards are worth it. She thrives on being included in everything. Please another video of Rose Marie, cant wait!
When your westie starts to get a little older I suggest you start to let her roam around on her own outside, its really interesting to watch how well they interact with nature. My westie Liz once had actually caught a rabbit in our back yard, I made her put it down it held her while it ran for its life haha
It was alot of fun training my Rose she could learn a new trick quickly, I started at 7 weeks training her. She had learned most of her tricks by the time she was 12 weeks old. She is 7 months old now and more stubborn about learning new tricks. I plan on posting a new video soon with all of her training. I recommend the book: GETTING STARTED: CLICKER TRAINING FOR DOGS-by KAREN PRYOR it came with a clicker and flash cards and a book, about $19.00 at the pet store.
i have a westie too, but the only thing he can do is to sit and lay down. Do u think he is too old to teach him tricks now? - he will be 2 yo in september
I wouldn't think that he is to old. I would suggest you get his very favorite treat (I use small pieces of Hot dog) and keep the training sessions to under 5 minutes a few times a day. Lots of praise and he will learn. Westies are very smart...
Rose will lay her head down and look up at me with such cute, sad eyes. I started to call it sad and added the hand signal. Most of a dogs tricks are just things they do naturally and you catch them doing it and treat and praise, to get them to repeat the behavior! Oh and she is just a smart puppy! lol...
She was 10 weeks old. To teach her to ring the bell was actually one of the easiest tricks to teach her. I hung the bell at the door and every time we went out to potty i had her touch the bell with her paw, Like her high five trick. She loves to drink water and pee... So I put her water out side so if she wanted a drink she had to ring the bell! So by putting the water outside she started doing excellent on her potty training too. She learned to go out side to potty when she got a drink.
You're a wonderful trainer and Rosie is very smart.
My little Kirby just started learning some tricks too. He can sit, lie down, stand up, shake hands, and spin around. The clicker is a very useful tool. Thanks for all the tips. :)
I think Kirby and Rosie should be friends haha :) They look alike and I think they're around the same age.
how did you do that?

@rtwilliams83 why would you teach your dog all these awsome tricks and then feed it something so unhealthy like hot dogs. Why wouldn't you use chicken or something like that. Hot dogs are terrible for humans to eat so i can only imagine what they would do to a small dog like that.

Tauvrn 2 years ago
its a bit easier to train a 2 years old dog because they can listen properly and can't be easily distracted from the things surrounding them because they got used to it. But the very first thing you should teach your pet is weather they know their name or not. because if they don't know their own name then you'll have difficulty teaching her tricks. :) i hope it helps :))

I got a bunch of chicken and started training her. Took 3 days for her to know 'down'. Still don't know a good way to potty train her.

what treats do you use?

My westie Liz once had actually caught a rabbit in our back yard, I made her put it down it held her while it ran for its life haha

how long did it take Rosie to learn all these tricks?
Im thinking of getting a puppy but i want a thorough understanding of the basic training i will need.
lalalarizzle 2 years ago
It was alot of fun training my Rose she could learn a new trick quickly, I started at 7 weeks training her. She had learned most of her tricks by the time she was 12 weeks old. She is 7 months old now and more stubborn about learning new tricks. I plan on posting a new video soon with all of her training. I recommend the book: GETTING STARTED: CLICKER TRAINING FOR DOGS-by KAREN PRYOR it came with a clicker and flash cards and a book, about $19.00 at the pet store.

amazing job!!!
i have a westie too, but the only thing he can do is to sit and lay down. Do u think he is too old to teach him tricks now? - he will be 2 yo in september
MyBisou 2 years ago
I wouldn't think that he is to old. I would suggest you get his very favorite treat (I use small pieces of Hot dog) and keep the training sessions to under 5 minutes a few times a day. Lots of praise and he will learn. Westies are very smart...

That was really smart to get her to ring the bell to go outside!

How did you teach her to do sad? She's so cute! I have tried teaching my dog to speak, but it didn't get anywhere. lol
rjpthomas 2 years ago
Rose will lay her head down and look up at me with such cute, sad eyes. I started to call it sad and added the hand signal. Most of a dogs tricks are just things they do naturally and you catch them doing it and treat and praise, to get them to repeat the behavior! Oh and she is just a smart puppy! lol...

Your a really great trainer!!! I love how yourr dog does the high five! I think that Rosie is a very good dog keep up the AWESOME work!|!
rubybunny1 2 years ago
wow thats awesome..how old was she when you started teaching her to use the bell?
tntbro 2 years ago

Take care! Awesome video! Keep them coming!
