Nice capture. That insignificant flash is probably about the size of Asia. (You can fit 3 Earths in the Great Red Spot near the top.) That is a whole lot of energy being released.
Also, I see a lot of comments on videos like this saying it's not an impact since Jupiter's all gas. That's not true. It most likely has a rocky core and there's definitely liquid down there for sure. The deep atmosphere's much denser than anything we'd call gaseous here on Earth. Stuff takes weeks to fall through.
That little flash could have killed everyone if it had hit earth. That's the big deal. Every time a new video of this occurring just brings us closer to the one that will happen. :D
That5: You have obviously not seen the comet impacts back from a few years ago. I think youre missing the point. Even though Jupiter is mostly gasses it has a density and gravity. When something is travelling at 20,000 miles per second it doesn't have to hit anything "Solid" to make an impact, just something more dense than a vacum.
Technically Jupiter is made up entirly of gas so the possibility of it being anything impacting the surface is ruled out but the possibility of some sort of meteorite with a substance unidentifiable to man reacted with the gases of Jupiter thus creating the optical flash.
guys you got it all wrong see this is what would happen if we got a chance to throw justin bieber into jupiter he would explode into a million of pieces. thats all really.
@LikeTotallyPwned He would freeze because of the lack of heat and explode because of the lack of an atmosphere (If you throw him in space... its closer and less costly xP)
@numbscholar correct. There was no impact on a solid surface (because Jupiter is a gas giant) but asteroids move ridiculously fast. When an asteroid that big moves that fast into a gas giant, its releases a huge amount of energy. It's similar to the idea (and reality) of jumping into water from a few meter feels like jumping into concrete.
@mvans130 nuclear weapons are not all a standard size, nuclear weapon yield can vary hugely - from the davy crockett at 0.01 KT to the Tsar at 50 megatons - so we can all stop estimating the number of bombs
@Cssfiend I agree...that is why, when I saw Ithoughthewasaninja correcting matt8ny on the number of nukes the flash would equate, I replied to matt8ny saying his estimate was fair. I also tried to direct the convo in a direction that is easily verifiable or measurable, the size of the flash, as opposed to the ambiguous comparisons of nuke sizes. ya see?
@darkMiLK9292 Actually it doesn't technically have a surface. A surface implies that the face is solid, and jupiter is gaseous right until the core, which is molten. so before you put people down, make sure you know what you are talking about.
They knocked over some of the bikers motorcycles at the biker bar by the west gate. From what I'm hearing, things could get pretty ugly for the black community around here, especialy after one of the higher ranking police officers made an attempt to have charges reduced on the black guy that was holding down the white guy they were stabbing and beating.
@jollyjenna1234 explosion on jupiter, caused by unknown object, but the interesting thing, is it was seen and it's size, is not something we could understand. lol
some hypothesis lead to the existence of Megatron, hiding on jupiter.
@DarkClanProductions It was most likely a relatively small asteroid -- I'm guessing in the neighborhood of 10 meters or so, but I need to consult an expert to find out for sure -- burning up upon impact into Jupiter. This is the second time such a flash has been observed this year. Observations of these flashes are getting more common because more and more amateur astronomers have video cameras attached to their telescopes.
it has been confirmed that the event filmed here is the direct result of george w bush, and s u v's. and now we must limit our prosperity to save the day. makes alot of sense.
the size of that tempest you can spot in the north is aprox 3 times the Earth's size, by that you can tell the impact was in a small area but probably equal to our total planet area. That giant of gas has absorbed many impacts over the existence of our solar system, like a shield to us, we can say.
@numbscholar You should "like" because we have more and more astronomers who are capable of observing the kinds of asteroids that could one day pose a danger to us. Once we discover them, we can do something about them before a disaster happens.
@numbscholar Asteroids explode upon impact on Jupiter for the same reason that they do upon entry into Earth's atmosphere -- it's a combination of pressure and heating effects. There is a terrific description of how it all works at is.gd / eC1Ps (can't put direct links in comments, hopefully you can figure out how to make that work).
BTW Jupiter very likely does have a solid core the mass of several Earths -- but it's WAAAAAAAY down there. No incoming asteroid would ever make it to the core.
