I have the 2TB version of this hard drive from 1,5 year ago and in the last months i experienced several problems with the USB conexion, and even on my new laptop i just cant acces to my data...im trying to buy a USB 3.0 to eSata adapter to transfer and save my files before i send this to the repair on the store i buyed...i have a guarranty untill 2015 so i have time...but can somebody tell me if i can somehow transfer the files, since the USB port is the only afected part?
Thanks IridiumVIII I've been stuck with this unit ever since I changed apartment simply because I misplaced the power adapter. was really on edge for not being able to back-up (and that is my favorite unit). I had this white adapter close by but refused to believe it belongs to this black unit. go figure. now I can rest assured.
i have the western digital passport 500gb, it's great, it works like a champ but its bulky and it has a glossy finish and with kids it got scratched up real easy, so i'm thinking about buying this one, since it has a brushed metal finish and slimmer, i already have 750gb on my hp touchsmart but i want this for extra memory and backup
Thanks for posting this. I moved my computer and was not sure that the white power supply went with the black unit. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.
I bought the 1.5TB version of the Seagate external HDD and it has been great so far but I don't have an eSata cable yet so I've only tried USB and Firewire.
it's okay, anyway, how long does it take to have that crazy heat produced?does it produce after few minutes or hours of usage/data writing or on standby mode it already produced that amount of heat?
Within 15 - 20 minutes it was nice and toasty just sitting idle / in standby. I wasn't impressed with the Seagate help forums because they about the problem and there were a lot negative comments posted about the heat and software issues. Number one being that you can't adjust the drives parameters when used thru eSATA. You have to shutdown, unplug eSATA, connect USB, restart, make adjustments, shutdown, reconnect the eSATA cable and then restart
Hey,i am about to buy this hard drive xtreme, but erm, overall how do you find it,as in the performance wise does it transfer fast for yourside or etc. Does it have a password lock so that other users can't open your backup files?
I didn't have any problem with the hard drive actual read/write performance overall. It was the crazy amount of heat the drive produces and the fact that it would either lock up or completely disappear from my system even though it was on. Thus forcing me to restart my PC frequently before I had enough and returned it. If you plan on getting the USB version you might be ok but the firewire version was too troublesome for me.
Overall performance may lack. The most important thing would be if that particular program or application is required to startup when you turn on your PC and the external is off during startup this could cause problems. If you ever need to remove that external you'll have to go in to the task manager and make sure it's not running before you remove the drive. Running a program on an external drive leaves you open for things to go wrong and may require unnecessary work.
Not that it matters much because that PC is only connected to the net when I need to do updates for the some of the apps I have installed on it. Once that's done the cable gets pulled - no wireless.
Personally speaking - whenever I build a PC, I always use WD as the main system drive. I haven't had one fail or encountered any kind drive related problems with them. This Seagate external drive is the only problem I had with Seagate - I haven't had any issues with their internal drives.
what problem did u have with the seagate external? because i was planning to buy the xtreme 1.5 tb or the WD my book studio edition, than in the end i decided to get a good seagate 1tb internal with an enclosure usb2, esata and fire wire 800/400. I just like to know the problem of your segate because i did some reviews on it and i wasn't 100% sure if i should get it.
Heat. That thing would get as hot as a hot plate. Then it would disappear and I would have to restart the computer plus if you wanted to access any of the actual functions/settings of the drive it had to be done via USB. My whole point in getting it was to use it via Firewire. In the end it was more trouble than it was worth but at least it was pretty to look at.
is it compatible with a macbook pro

can u run programs on those things as you would on the comps reg hard drive?

Depending on the application you could but I wouldn't recommend it personally.

why wouldn't you recommend it?just wondering, and thanks for the reply.

EVERYONE BUY A GOOD SATA DRIVE AND AN ENCLOSURE. They're more reliable! These externals seem to die fast.

Why do you keep the stickers on your displays?
Anyway, indeed too bad about the white cables.
Do you happen to know why a lot of external HDD's don't have firewire?
kenjuma 3 years ago
Haha! Good question. I hadn't really thought about them that much. You have an eye for detail.
I'll be posting Part III sometime tomorrow evening. I actually ended up taking that drive back due to performance issues.
IridiumVIII 3 years ago
"I actually ended up taking that drive back due to performance issues."
why what happened?
i'm actually about to get one this week and i want to know if it's reliable or not.
thanks.
VeronicaMartian 3 years ago
supposedly you got an e-sata cable for yourself, did you try that out?
earthingsboy 2 years ago
Assuming because firewire is mostly for mac people and most people want USB pro's who want External buy enclosures.
