I did go in a few times but found it full of people there just to say they had been there not to enjoy the club. The Boardwalk was better and just across the street from The Hacienda.
Lot of bitchin on a few of these Hac vids but fact is it was a real buzz at 17 just gettin in there in 89 until the old confidence grew then you'd be walking around like a veteran! and when the pills were still good there wasnt a great deal of trouble until the gangs took over later on through the 90s, I'd say best times were up to about 93 tunewise also
I'd kick a dogs head of to of been old enough to go to the Hac, nearly 29 now, wish I was nearly 49 so I'd of been there at the absolute peak of rave culture
I first went to the Hac in 1989 with my Mancunian cousin and had a blindin' night!!! I remember seeing the bloke from Candy bloody Flip fannying around in a poncho - the best, best, best thing was the high ceilings and the wicked flower lights - you never sweated in there - it was the BEST - the UK would have been a different place if it had never existed. Freedom to Party!!!!!!!!! xx
We first set foot in the place in 82 and for the last time in June.99 at around 6.30am when it was squatted by the EF! ok cafe collective. With the police helicopter hovering overhead, fire-eaters & jugglers entertaining the cops with torches and video cameras on the railway line, and some of the best music I'd heard for years as a fitting soundtrack to the headline-grabbing curtain-closing battle going on below as word spread about the occupation, the night will go down in history.
Paul Cons was a promotional genius & dissapeared off the radar far too quickly. The last time I saw him was circa 1990, he was in a Tesco supermarket in Rugby arguing with a queer.
@bitterfuse95 I saw Paul in Selfridges a couple of years ago and also fiona who used to run the door!! I worked there between 89-91, wicked memories....
This clubs priority was the vibe and music thats why the runners had so many problems, i remember them giving out free pints of chilled water so noone collapsed
Zooming down Whitworth street brings back so many memories! Strange seeing people dancing in the Hacienda years before Acid House even kicked off. lol
I went to the Hacienda religiously every Friday night with my mate and fellow DJ, Danny D around 86, 87 and 88. Anyone who says it was over-rated is talking through their proverbial backside, it was wicked, good good memories. Just getting in was a task lol, those bouncers were knobheads, I ended up working for Factory at one of their other Manchester venues which got me free admission to the Hac, good times.
remember were the idea came from ny's studio 51 they had loads of clubs like the hac 5 years before over there. thank fuck tony wilson and others went over and brought the idea back...... what a club
i went hac in 1990 when i was just 19..changed me forever!!!!!! so sad when i went back down there 2 years ago to see it has apartments....how crap is that!
OK it's all over now.... thunderdome and Konspiracy were tonnes better anyway....it's just that Factory were good at public relations....mike pickering is over-rated, the Hac was over-rated and full of poseurs whppranced around in clothes from geese and the design centre..., Steve Williams please make a comeback
OMG, I'm 30 and first went to the Hacienda at 16 yrs old in 1994 so I missed it's best years. But looking at this, I haven't seen a club like it since. What an amazing group of businesses under the FAC company with a fantastic outlook. Very sorely missed :(
surely manc council know how much piblicity the city got just from hac, why don't they just open another club like this? they turned hac into flats, apparantly they're turning warehouse proj into flats, if sankeys gets turned into flats that'l be it, an amazing city ruined because some people want somewhere to live, it's bullshit
It was gangland that got the Hacienda closed down. Greed, drugs, power struggles, guns. Bastards. Now the 2 men responsible are dead, both murdered, so there was no need to close it. Ironic. And a property developer just saw an opportunity to make big bucks with the slogan "Now the party's over, you can come home." There are too many apartments in the city and not enough people who want to live in them anymore. Theres thousands empty. Serves themselves right. Greedy bastards.
Has, best club ever, but what about the parties after under the arches, cars would just pull up and listen to the loudest car stereo. un ber fuckin livable. Lets av it.
I was always fascinated with those railway arch parties, but I was only a kid in the south back then.I lived in Longsight in the late 90's and we used to wander around them arches under the station wondering what had happened way back then...
Sadly I was born in '87 so I was too late for the Hac. But it's spirit still lives on in the UK in Manchester. E's and that drug culture will remain the ode to club, the city, it's people and the man himself, Mr TONY WILSON. So next time you drop a tab, think of Mr Wilson. "Most of all, I love Manchester. The crumbling warehouses, the railway arches, the cheap abundant drugs." -Tony in 24HPP
where the the dance police at 2.17-2.31, i'd have kicked the cunts out for bringing the place down if i was Tony Wilson - thought the Hac was for cool kids ;O)
I go to a few gigs still in Manchester and I have to say there's fucking NOWHERE clubwise to go after ! Just non descript soul-less vacuous bars . So much good the Hac did.
sankeys is good...bit out of the way in ardwick tho but it was voted 17th best nightclub in the world so cant be too bad. but i agree manchester is shit it just caters for the upper class and students theres not enough 'proper' night clubs playin 'proper' dance music for working class people in and around manchester, it takes the piss!
Same here in Glasgow bro, Its getting to pretentious. I have to admit though when Ive been down in Manchester Ive had a good time. Was in the Thirsty Scholar and this other palce that was a former public lav lol
Haha!! Excuse my ignorence but from what I've heard about Glasgow I never thought it'd be a pretencious place, I suppose the same could be said of Manc though it ain't got the best rep neither. Yeah but Manchester seems to be on the resurgence now. Warehouse Project, Paradise Factory, Sankeys, Area 51, Venus, something's building in Manchester recently. The Indie scene's really coming to life as well!!

I think what you mean by Indie might have changed since then though, Indie pretty much covers the new rock sort of bands nowadays. But things are definitely back on the up in Manchester.
