This album didn't deserve anywhere near the criticism that it received. I loved it the first time I heard it, and still love it just as much now. I was watching an interview with Madonna where she said it was one of her favourites. After discussing the reaction to the album, Madonna smiled and said she picked her crown up off the floor, put it back on and kept going!! THE QUEEN!

Most people (music critics, music fans, and even Madonna fans) don't understand the importance of this album; they dismiss it as a bad joke, call it a failure, and career suicide. In years to come, people are going to change their minds about this LP and realize its underlying genius, but only time will tell...

Out of all her albums, "American Life" & "Ray of Light" are the 2 that I come back to the most because they're the most genuine representation of Madonna as a human being.

I wanna talk about AMERICAN LIFE. I went to HOLLYWOOD, where NOBODY KNOWS ME, but no one could really understand me. My MOTHER AND FATHER used to tell ''NOTHING FAILS'' if you try really hard, but i didn't listen. I thought Life was just an EASY RIDE. I don't know, maybe, I was in an X-STATIC PROCESS. However, I realise that I'M SO STUPID 'cause their INTERVENTION was for good reason. My extreme point of view: we all just need LOVE PROFUSION.

I agree with everyone. I checked this album out from the library because I'd heard from everyone that it was Madonna's worst album. From the very first synthesizers on this song I was hooked. This album is nothing short of a masterpiece in its genre. It is every bit as good as Madonna's best--surely just as good as Ray of Light. I listened to this album non stop for several days in a row, trying to understand why no one liked it. I'm totally buying it now.

I remember when this came out, anything that wasn't in line with the obsessive fearmongering and hyper patriotism promoted by the Bush administration was completely ignored, or hated. (this was the time of freedom fries...) I never did get why people didn't like this song, other than for the poor timing around the Iraq War. It's well composed, exciting and bold, with a real message. I hope and assume that this will become more appreciated as people realize how brainwashed they were back then.
