I would like to know why the HESH ammunition, that Chieftain used to fire, was phased out. By what I know, this kind of ammunition was very eficient against another mbts. Even its gun was replaced,in the Challenger mbt, by the german cannon that I don't know if is really so good as is frequently quoted when compared against the old british gun.
In some sites is said that the HESH ammunition was phased out because there are more modern and efficient kind of ammunitions. But I think that this kind of ammunition is still effective against the newest and more tight composite armor plates, and perhaps even against the MBTs that have composite armor covered by the newest kinds of ERA. Am I right ?
And is said,in some sites, that the Challenger 2 British rifled gun will be replaced by the Leopard 2A6 L55 longest barrel cannon. Is it true ? I can't see in what the British gun would be less good than the German cannon. Some specialists say that the British gun have more recoil, less precision and performance. Is it correct ?
@LeoAndRas Challenger 2 will not be getting a smoothbore. The only benefit of the smoothbore to the challenger was that it could use NATO standard single piece ammo, as they stopped making rifled rounds years ago.
So why this kind of ammunition almost never is mentioned as part of ammunition available for modern MBTs ? I see much more frequently mentions about APDSFS, HEAT and other types of rounds, and until now I didn't saw none article about the L-55 gun of Leopard 2A6 firing this ammunition.
One day the orange force will win!!! ;-)

@LeoAndRas Challenger 2 uses a British rifled gun and still uses HESH rounds.

@LeoAndRas HESH ammo is still in use. I don't know about it's effectiveness against modern armour.
