@LittleVinnyCock Actually about 37,000 were killed under Johnson's command. Another 21,000 were killed when Nixon was President. The war was bi-partisan, supported by both parties, although anti-war feelings were more common among Demoncrats.
in the area of civil rights. Even in the civil rights bill of 57', very weak, Richard Russell blocked LBJ's efforts..
LBJ through negotiating, made the bill acceptable to eveyone. But he was a southerner. Do you know what Johnson's great contibution to the1964 civil rights act was?
No, the power in the Senate was Richard Russell of Georgia and the south ., also armed Serv. chair and Approp. chair for Ag. Comm. From him a united front of conservatism could confront and thwart whatever legis. they deemed no good, including anticivil rights south . Fearing reprisals senators would acquiesce. It was simple. there is little room to elaborate more here.
Kennedy was concerned about two thngs as President?????Womaning and his reelection...name three legislaive bills which Kennedy passed as President in the 3 years he was in office????? Nothing! We need more presidents like Johnson who changed America for the better..The asholes who knock them are midgets..they know not what they talk about!! ASSHOLES!
What I remember about LBJ is that he won his seat in Texas by being crooked, and even bragged to David Brinkley (on several occasions) about a story where they copied names of tombstones to enroll them as voters.
I also remember the fear-mongering commercial that they ran immediately before the election intimating that Goldwater would get us into a nuclear war with the Soviets. And from LBJ through Carter, we barely protested the way the Soviets oppressed the people of the Eastern Bloc.
So, you don't remember that he passed Medicare and Medicaid,Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts of '64/'65,Headstart,the War on Poverty,Clean Air and Clean water, funding for the Arts,Fair Housing, truth in labeling, consumer protection,PBS,NPR?
That's a good point. The Civil Rights and Voting Acts are great, and were supported by more Republicans than Democrats. No thanks for Medicare and Medicaid, which are completely bankrupt, and rife with fraud and waste. (Look up the tape of him talking with Ted Kennedy about how they'll have to lie to the American people about the true cost.)
PBS and NPR don't deserve thanks either. Why should our tax dollars support a government run (and nearly entirely left wing) news organization?
If we spent more money on our country than other countries we could pay for all of it now. BTW, why do you sight something tht is "left-wing" if you don't like them because it's "government run"? NPR and PBS get no federal funding whatsoever. Don't you ever see or hear the pldgedrives?
LBJ also had 85% of the US people backing him on this Medicare bill. The current health care bill is supported by 32% of the US people.....A major difference in opinion.......
Taking care of the elderly and defenseless is expensive. When your time comes, don't accept medicare or social security- crispy. If you become mentally ill or disabled before your time-don't apply for it. Wealthy people like you don't need coverage and can save the country a lot of money.
He hid the cost of Viet Nam too. You are naive, very. The legislative miracles
wroght for the poor by the 37th adm. were done any way possible to achieve a means. If you think no lying is done
by politicians,OK. Health care refortms
by OBAMA are treated as "Bolshevik plots" , with the "new transparency":.(Fri). Senate is deliberative body, but to merely oppose for special interests
So... just cherrypick what you like and son't like about The Great Society;the fact is he did a lot more good for this country than people like bush and reagan ever did. I guess you won't be using your Medicare card will you? As for more Republicans than Democrats supporting the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts; What does that proove?
1. PBS and NPR receive government subsidies. Fact.
2. The majority of their coverage and interviews are pro-democrat in nature. Even my liberal friends acknowledge that.
3. The Great Society created a permanent underclass of those dependent on welfare. Trillions spent and wasted. What reduced it? Tax cuts that created jobs under Reagan and welfare reform under Clinton that forced people to provide for themselves.
4. Foreign aid (which I don't like either) is a fraction of $ spent on welfare.
1. 2% of their funding is from the government, the rest comes from pledge drives.
2. The majority is NOT "pro-democrat(sic)" as you claim from your"liberal friends".
3.The Great Society cut the poverty rate to only 12% from about 19% at the beginning of the 60's. reagan's tax cuts brought the nation into debt.
4. I would rather spend money on people in OUR country than somewhere else. Iraq can take care of it's own problems;we need to start helping the citizens of our nation.
1. $430 million of federal funding to PBS. It should be zero. I loved Sesame Street, but why does the federal government need to be involved in funding TV?
2. I've read differing numbers (as the overall poverty rate had been falling for years prior, but the dependency it created on federal giveaways is undeniable.
3. Reagan tax cuts spurred the economy & increased revenues. Spending caused the debt.
4. I agree with you, though defense spending is specifically authorized by the Constitution.
PBS does not get that much money. It's just not true. You may have read differing numbers, but the fact is the poverty level went down faster in the four years that LBJ was President than at any other time in our nation's history. reagan sent the country into debt after those tax cuts along with defense spending. It increased revenues for people who already had a lot of money. I would like you to tell me where it says defense spending is authorized by the Constitution.
I think Huckstered's only point was to answer your question to me about, "I would like you to show me where it says that Congress can authorize defense spending." Your question was answered.
To Albert Einstein Crispy. PBS is an educational subsidy for children of poverty. Reaganomics(an oxymoron to describe a cowboy actor running the country) was a tax cut for the wealthy this country is still recovering from, Bush worsened . Welfare for the rich. Tax cuts must be progressive or else
they become a burden on the middle class and a landfall for the wealthy; overall spending decreases and adds to the recession and job loss.
The Reagan tax cuts ended the economic malaise that Carter created, as well as increase government revenues. Why did the deficit increase? Because Congress did nothing to cut spending and Reagan wanted to rebuild the military that Carter gutted. That deficit is paltry compared to the insane spending that is going on under Obama, but that is a subject for another day.
Err... okay, this was the equivalent to telling me, "Nyah nyah nyah..." You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but you did nothing to refute what I said.
So you say it is nonsense based on what other information? You refuted nothing. I stated facts, and you answered that they are not. I guess that leaves us nothing to discuss.
All nonsense, no empirical data whatsoever. Typically, opinions of the brainwashed and generally spoofed public done in by the media. Keep babbling and nodding off. It is unbelievable what is being done
with the media here to non-thinking people. Very predictable of the uninformed.
and millions of povrty stricken, elderly, children, disabled , handicapped and mentally ill people. A natl. horror at one time. If it was such a
bad idea whay doesn't some politician
try to repeal these acts? It would be political suicide. It is what people need
and want. IT keeps hunger, homelessness and mostof all the elderly. NPR is the last bastion of the informed public, without the biast purchased media.
I remember the '64 election and in my young mind a vote for LBJ was a vote for JFK's memory. LBJ won big on the coat tails of JFK. That's not saying LBJ wouldn't have won on his own because he would have.
The master of the senate....he knew how to graciously ask for advice and be a "friend," even if he didn't want it (not that that is the case here). He knew the value of that.
Interesting conversation. It was made clear who wearing the trousers, and he wasn't elected. When it came to foreign policy Johnson was particularly hapless. This scenario seems to repeat endlessly, but ours not to reason why.
The interesting thing about these tapes is this was back when
there was actually some genuine debate between the 2 sides in
the Senate, the 2 sides in the House and the White House.
These last 10 years the Legislative mostly rubber stamps what
the White House sends up there because ALL 3 ARE OWNED
BY THE SAME BANKSTERS.

Quite boring actually. I pity anyone who has to listen through these tapes looking for gems.

Suprkit 2 years ago
That's a good point. The Civil Rights and Voting Acts are great, and were supported by more Republicans than Democrats. No thanks for Medicare and Medicaid, which are completely bankrupt, and rife with fraud and waste. (Look up the tape of him talking with Ted Kennedy about how they'll have to lie to the American people about the true cost.)
PBS and NPR don't deserve thanks either. Why should our tax dollars support a government run (and nearly entirely left wing) news organization?
crispiegee1 2 years ago
In fact, NPR cheerfully credits Johnson with getting Medicare passed by lying about its costs.
The Cato Institute found:
- When Medicare was launched in '65, Part A was projected to cost $9B by 1990, but ended up costing $67B.
-When Medicaids special hospitals subsidy was added in 1987, it was supposed to cost $100 million annually, but it already cost $11 BILLION by 1992.
- When Medicares home care benefit was added in 1988, it was projected to cost $4B in 1993, but ended up costing $10B.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
If we spent more money on our country than other countries we could pay for all of it now. BTW, why do you sight something tht is "left-wing" if you don't like them because it's "government run"? NPR and PBS get no federal funding whatsoever. Don't you ever see or hear the pldgedrives?
Suprkit 2 years ago
LBJ also had 85% of the US people backing him on this Medicare bill. The current health care bill is supported by 32% of the US people.....A major difference in opinion.......

That is a slanted to the right poll false poll.

Taking care of the elderly and defenseless is expensive. When your time comes, don't accept medicare or social security- crispy. If you become mentally ill or disabled before your time-don't apply for it. Wealthy people like you don't need coverage and can save the country a lot of money.
huckstered 2 years ago
He hid the cost of Viet Nam too. You are naive, very. The legislative miracles
wroght for the poor by the 37th adm. were done any way possible to achieve a means. If you think no lying is done
by politicians,OK. Health care refortms
by OBAMA are treated as "Bolshevik plots" , with the "new transparency":.(Fri). Senate is deliberative body, but to merely oppose for special interests
is counterproductive "for the people".
huckstered 2 years ago
So... just cherrypick what you like and son't like about The Great Society;the fact is he did a lot more good for this country than people like bush and reagan ever did. I guess you won't be using your Medicare card will you? As for more Republicans than Democrats supporting the Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts; What does that proove?
Suprkit 2 years ago
4. Foreign aid (which I don't like either) is a fraction of $ spent on welfare.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
1. 2% of their funding is from the government, the rest comes from pledge drives.
Suprkit 2 years ago
4. I agree with you, though defense spending is specifically authorized by the Constitution.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
PBS does not get that much money. It's just not true. You may have read differing numbers, but the fact is the poverty level went down faster in the four years that LBJ was President than at any other time in our nation's history. reagan sent the country into debt after those tax cuts along with defense spending. It increased revenues for people who already had a lot of money. I would like you to tell me where it says defense spending is authorized by the Constitution.
Suprkit 2 years ago
" To Provide for the National Defense"
is in the preamble to the Constitution.
huckstered 2 years ago
It also says "Premote the General Welfare" but you seem to disagree with that, right?
Suprkit 2 years ago
I think Huckstered's only point was to answer your question to me about, "I would like you to show me where it says that Congress can authorize defense spending." Your question was answered.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
Yes, he answered my question. But it seems like that's one of the few passages people like you seem to take seriously is all I'm saying.

One cannot take a person like crispe
seriously, don't you know that?

The welfare state whould appeal to any businessman not to the right of Atilla
the Hun. People just don't get it because
they imbibe b.s. from the cable news.
A steady demand is best as evidenced by the recently exposed greed within the health insurance industry. Canada,Mexico and much of Europe
already has socialized medicine. Many people just don't get it.

To Albert Einstein Crispy. PBS is an educational subsidy for children of poverty. Reaganomics(an oxymoron to describe a cowboy actor running the country) was a tax cut for the wealthy this country is still recovering from, Bush worsened . Welfare for the rich. Tax cuts must be progressive or else
they become a burden on the middle class and a landfall for the wealthy; overall spending decreases and adds to the recession and job loss.
huckstered 2 years ago
The Reagan tax cuts ended the economic malaise that Carter created, as well as increase government revenues. Why did the deficit increase? Because Congress did nothing to cut spending and Reagan wanted to rebuild the military that Carter gutted. That deficit is paltry compared to the insane spending that is going on under Obama, but that is a subject for another day.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
Recessions happen no matter what politician is in office. The military-industrial complex is the nightmare Eisenhower warned it would become.
A stolen election by Bush proved it.
Bush-Cheney was a long nightmare.

1. Fact : you don't know what you're talking about.
2. Fact: You don't know anything about The Great Society.
3. Fact: NPR and PBS you know nothing about either. They are the last vestige of the free press.
4. Fact: Keep on believeing all the propaganda you want.
huckstered 2 years ago
Err... okay, this was the equivalent to telling me, "Nyah nyah nyah..." You're entitled to your opinion, of course, but you did nothing to refute what I said.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
No , I was saying "you put down something as "fact" something that is pure nonsense.
huckstered 2 years ago
So you say it is nonsense based on what other information? You refuted nothing. I stated facts, and you answered that they are not. I guess that leaves us nothing to discuss.
crispiegee1 2 years ago
You stated no facts. None.
All nonsense, no empirical data whatsoever. Typically, opinions of the brainwashed and generally spoofed public done in by the media. Keep babbling and nodding off. It is unbelievable what is being done
with the media here to non-thinking people. Very predictable of the uninformed.
huckstered 2 years ago
You truly don't know what you speak of
when it comes to medicare and medicaid.
Republicans were liberal yanks back then
and democrats were the rednecks. Positions are reversed now.
huckstered 2 years ago
True bankrupt but, they help millions
and millions of povrty stricken, elderly, children, disabled , handicapped and mentally ill people. A natl. horror at one time. If it was such a
bad idea whay doesn't some politician
try to repeal these acts? It would be political suicide. It is what people need
and want. IT keeps hunger, homelessness and mostof all the elderly. NPR is the last bastion of the informed public, without the biast purchased media.

one word .. JFK
Fukkutah 2 years ago
I remember the '64 election and in my young mind a vote for LBJ was a vote for JFK's memory. LBJ won big on the coat tails of JFK. That's not saying LBJ wouldn't have won on his own because he would have.

5'05 - that senator referred to Kennedy as "the other fellow" - Kennedy was killed by his enemies, and Johnson was one of them.
