is it a preditor insect? if so how does it capture and eat it's pray? does is have venom? is it a threat to humans? what is its natural habbitat? how rare are they?
do you have any videos of th Uroceras gigas? (giant wood wasp)
i was on a camping holiday when i saw masses of them and a dying tree., i think they inject some kind of liquid into the tree and then lay theyre eggs into the liquid they put into it. but im not the knowledgable on bugs.
Can these be found in Washington? I believe I saw a insect that looked much like this. The only way I can explain it, is that it buzzed very loudly when it flew, much like a wasp. But it was black and looked more like a flying ant. But was definitely not.
i had one of these get stuck in my shirt once, it bit me repeatedly i guess it didn't know it was in my shirt, shirt hurt because it was one after another, until i took my shirt off and threw it outside and took a shower.. and stayed inside for the rest of the day................and it scared me so much as i hardly go out side anymore, glad to know they are harmless.
@memutic but if you do irritate them, do they have some self defense? biting perhaps? looks a lil freaky. like a thinner but oversized head of an ant with a long neck
@memutic The only bugs that gross me out are some beetles, earwigs and Bolivia bugs. Anything else, and I'm fine. I'd actually like to hold one of these.
that kind of mentality is destroying our world!, we kill every little creature we see or find, they are part of our world, they deserve to exist as much as we do, in the end they are necessary for our own existence.
Not exactly! The pronotum is set far forward on the first thoracic segment - which gives it that tube-like neck. The thorax is fused - observe at 0:25 when it is bending its neck up - you can see the 1st thoracic segment where the 1st pair of legs joins the body, and the pronotum is the part sitting on top that bends upward.
That's an excellent question! Took me a little while to figure it out. It's not precisely "jointed" in the normal insect-sense of the word, but the pronotum is sclerotized (hard) whereas the rest of the prothorax is not. So it is flexible at the junction of the basal part and the produced part, kind of like the finger of a glove, if you will. I haven't dissected one, but I presume the sclerotized top of the produced part is where all the muscles insert that allow it the range of neck motion.
All insects are fastidious cleaners, it prevents movement-hampering buildup, bacterial growth, and fungal growth. Especially important if they live in Cordyceps territory!

Does that essentially mean that there is a panel on the top of the prothorax that's jointed?
