I've seen Air Brush Kits at the hardware store, running around $15. You reckon those along with some DuraCoat products and an air compressor would get the job done?
How has this held up on the rubber parts? I am looking to do this on my items and according to the folks at Duracoat its not to be used on Rubber. Looked like it was sucessful for you. I did Krylon Camo w/ Fusion & a MAPP torch to flash off the volatiles as I coated and it went on great. It isnt however as durable as the Duracoat and the folks at the company steer me away from using it on rubber. Even with their Duraflex additive, a nono. Any responses with Duracoat on rubber is appreciated.
@BassmanSW, Please read my comment again, he has no phone service at all he WILL NOT even talk to you over the phone no matter what the problem is. My problem was with the payment part of the transaction not the product or how to use it so comming to youtube wouldnt have helped that.
Duracoat is a good product, just dont buy it from Duracoat Firearm Finishes Direct the guy who runs this web site Anthoney G Houts has zero coustemer service skills and is rude as hell in his emails witch is the only way he will deal with you he does not have a coustmer service number. All i wanted to do is give him my business and he acted as if he didnt care, avoid him at all costs.
@WrenchinAllDay At least he answered the phone and spoke English! LOL. I never call customer service if I can avoid it. I tend to come here to YT and I can usually find what I need. Cheers!
hey Nutnfancy i have a few guns i want to have DuraCoated. do you now anyone that dues DuraCoat in or around Huston Texas or a gun smith i can ship it to to have it dune?
good stuff ,i like it! a tip for ya when you paint try to stay away from short bursts i know like on the the scope you have to, but when you can, create a spray pattern with long overlapping coats. then go over as you need to, that way it'll look good in the sun too. good job!
@nutnfancy Those airbrush propellent cans need to be sunk in a bucket of water to work well. You take a bucket of hot tap water and trap the can under a few bricks. The water absorbs and dissipates the temperature drop associated with the release of the gas.
@GuitarCrazy12100 actually duracoat now has a shake and spray kit where you dont need a airbrush. but any duracoat does need to be spray applied. no brushing on unfortunately.
My advice: dont go so heavy on your first coat. Watching you hit that monopod it looks pretty heavy. You will get runs and your dry time will vary greatly. Dont be afraid to use 2 coats. Your fist is a base coat to coat the low spots then use your 2nd to fill in the rest. good luck
How and why? I've heard Cerakote is better, but Duracoat has more color options. Please let me know where I can find a professional comparison of the two. Much appreciated.
@NovaScotiaNewfie Go with Aircraft grade paint remover. It's easier to work with because it's a bit more goopy in consistency. You do need to sand the surface to make any paint or finish take to the part easier.
I don't want to duracoat the bolt. I want to duracoat the Aluminum receiver and external barrel and mag tube. I don't want to nickel those parts because 1)- I want them to stay black, and 2)-to apply the NP3 coating, it'd be necessary to first strip the hard anodizing, which would weaken the receiver. Duracoat can be applied directly to a hard anodized surface. Thank you for answering wrt duracoating the inside of the receiver.
Supposedly duracoat can be applied directly over the anodized aluminum, and sticks really well. Perhaps I'll send the bolt and other small internals off to Robar for NP3 coating, but Duracoat the barrel and receiver. Any idea how well a NP3 coated bolt would function in a receiver coated inside and out with duracoat?
Do you apply Duracoat to the chamber or inside the receivers of your guns?
I have an SLP mk 1 that was thinking of getting NP3 coated by Robar. But, it's expensive, and if I understand correctly Robar will have to bead blast the aluminum receiver and remove the hard anodize in order to plate it. I worry about the bead blasting changing tolerances, and I don't want to lose that nice hard anodize coating.
Sweet a Nutnfancy video under 10:00 I definitely have time for this one! I love the videos but so long I usually don't have time. And as usual anything I'm interested in I search it and NutnFancy has a video for it ;)
i heard you say something about rubber when you were spraying that mono pod. im assuming the bottom part was hard rubber. how did it hold up. the reason i ask is because i have a hoge stock id like to paint, but no one can give me a straight answer as to whether i can paint it or not. thanks
hey nut i am planning to duracoat my spyderco endura 4. but the problem is that there is no available duracoats here in our country. nut where can i purchase duracoat online?? love your vids man more power
Go to Home Depot or Lowes and you can purchase "Appliance Epoxy" spray paint. About $5.00 a can. Used it to paint a fiberglass boat. Be aware. Duracote above is the real deal with seperate hardener. It is MUCH better. And, yes, it will coat your nasal passages and lungs. It will reduce oxygenation in your lungs. Trust me.
@mpellegran Appliance epoxy is a good one-part spray paint, but hardly any colors especially dull. Many new two part epoxy paints(probably duracoat) have near powder coat durability and don't need baking. I suggest getting a better air brush than what they got because I've used one and it sucks with paints(spits alot), or get a touch-up spray gun for $15 to $20 at walmart or wherever. They give a pretty even coat, hold more paint, and they last a lifetime. Good luck.
I would highly reccomend that you at least remove the trigger assembly before painting the action, it takes all of a couple minutes. Another thing you might think about is disassembling the bolt before painting, again it takes 2-3 minutes. In return you will get a more professinal looking job.
Duracoat is made by Lauer Custom Weaponry in Hallie, WI (2 miles from my house) Lauers shop kicks ass. . . highly suggest anyone in the area to make the drive in!!

In the interest of saviing paint, is there a huge benefit in coating a synthetic stock with duracoat as opposed to spray paint or acrylic paint for use with an airbrush? Its my understanding Duracoat paints are more or less a heavy duty rust preventer ( a really cool rust preventer).
Im about to duracoat a Savage/Stevens 200 in 22-250 and was wondering about spraying the bolt lugs. I got the self lubricating duracoat but will painting the bolt lugs as well as inside the rails cause clearance issues?

Does the application of DuraCoat Interfere with the action of a firearm? Ive noticed its in the breech and along other key points on the rifle. Does it cause any interference in the action?
What's this you're saying people duracoating their weapons when they go to the sand box? Are you guys over there in the US allowed to paint your service rifles or something?
@BrandonEclipse Yea, they do it all the time, black is one of the most easily seen colors, especially when its against a tan background (their own camo), so anything is done to take away that obvious dark spot.
@TheJORPR777 Do you really need to ask that? That's like asking what's the point of having your car painted in your favourite colour. You like the way it looks, simple as that.
Quick tip, charcoal (not the stuff that's pretreated with lighter fluid but the plain stuff) helps pull the fumes out of the air. Or big tubs of baking soda.
Im using my sigma as a project gun and am planning to use krylon flat black spray paint on my sigma sw9ve slide... does any one have any advice or input on that? It would be much appreciated thanx. Decorating looks great... But Im trying to keep the costs down
I wanted to do the ACU Camo on one of my shotguns. Do they supply a stencil for you to use for the camo? I hope so, because ACU would be nearly impossible to freehand.
Odd that I stumble on this video after I scratch the F**K out of my V10 on concrete. but a question: Is Duracoat a protectant? Or is it just like, a preference for custom coloration for your weapon?
I’ve painted a fair share in my time and I’ll tell you what I have preached to others. Regardless what your painting it’ll only come out as good as your attention to preparation was, cut corners or get the mindset of “Its good enough” and your final product will show it. I’m not a perfectionist but my point is take your time and do it right... Ray
i was wondering about coat thickness. does coating your firearm greatly affect tolerances? i see that coat thickness id .25 - 1.5 mils so that being said, what are some of the tighter tolerances in an AR-15, Glock, etc?
Try blue loc-tite fancy on that piece that pops off. It's still service removable and it wont budge ever again during use. I use it on some bolts and screws on my airsoft weapons. they are gas blowback rifles and on full auto they tend to vibrate loose. the blue loc-tite is awesome and cheap at $4.95 and a little drop goes a long way.
i have a very important quesion, i have an ar 15, i use MILITEC-1 gun oil and i have ben noticing that it iliterally eats theough alot of different kinds of finishes.. can somebody that uses MILITEC-1 and has a duraCoat camo tell me how it reacts with the gun oil, please message me or make a reply thanks...
This is a great vid. As a professional model maker as well as a gun enthusiast, I have to say that the cheap Harbor Freight airbrush is perfect for this application. I wouldn't run that stuff through my $200 Badger airbrush if you gave me 500 bucks LOL. It would probably be okay but you'd be asking for trouble.
Also those airbrush propellant cans are pretty hit and miss. A compressor is best in the long run.
I was going to buy a compressor just like the one you use but the Sears employee said it would be too powerful for a small airbrush and when I was viewing Duracoats page it said 10-12 pounds output pressure is what you need and it looked like the compressors sears had all started out around 20 pounds
Just get a different pressure regulator. Nutn is probably having problems with that hose because of over pressurization. A water/oil separator or filter is a good thing to run for spraying. If you don't have/need a full sized compressor you can get a air brush specific compressor for around $100. Check out TCP Global, Harbor Freight, hobby shops, etc.
Thanks for the input I was at a local hobby store yesterday and the cheapest "hobby compressor" they had was $330!! so I went ahead and bought a Craftsman compressor that looks just like the one in this vid and it had a regulator build in and I bought a water/oil sep too
Right on about the spray paint. We hang our junk from coat hangers and spray paint it, then take it out. The edges and raised parts show wear first, but we don't really care, we'll hit it again, it gets the job done.
Good vid, looks fun if you have the time to do it right haha.
Thanks for doing the duracoat vids! I am planning on duracoating my knives (the 1095 ones) and my tactical carbine. Very detailed, and informative! Keep it up!
a compressor with at least 35 psi , metal is advised to be glass blasted. i found a wmv file online with the full instructional video in about 10 parts. basically it says desgress blow off, paint with airbruss or LVHP spraygun let dry 20 min per layer in oven or hour without . there is also a clear matt for blue metal
this could be worth a note here ; in the auto paint world it is an absolute must to wear skin protection and breathing apparatus w/ epoxy paint . if you breathe enough it will harden on the surface of your lungs and you will suffocate to death . some elements are also cummulative and are absorbed through the skin , a worthy warning to the viewers .
these vids have been great as always wanted to know how,i got a comment back from somebody saying that as i have never shot a gun why do i leace comments as i have nothing to input of any use? anyways, peace love from UK
You comment all you want, manx. We have a large percentage of viewers who have never picked up a gun, or even been close to one. People that Nutn wants to reach. Glad to have you around. You must be doing something right as you're already getting critics. ;) -- Veri
Yeah man, lots of Nuttin's videos are directed specifically at people like us. Well, I'm not in your boat anymore, since Nuttin made me go out and buy two shotguns and 2 rifles in the last 4 months, but hey, keep posting man!
I want to coat my 10|22 reciever black but it already came with some type of silver epoxy paint on it. Do I have to rough up the old paint with sandpaper or somthing?
@nutnfancy i watched the full video and noticed how much pride you put into your work... good job thats y im a fan because of your thouroness in reviewing and all your work
First off, love the vid! Helped me cement my choice to go with Duracoat.
Just one little pet peeve of mine: It's a 5 TO 15 scope, not 5 BY 15. The BY would dictated the size of the bell, probly being 44mm from the looks of it. 5 TO 15 BY 44
hey i just orderes a john masen Full Length Pistol Grip Stock for my ithaca model 37 do you thing that duracoat would work well on that synthetic/composite substrate or is it only meant for metal parts?
hahaha! We had a great letter last week from a guy who talked his wife into a coyote brown livingroom color by letting her believe it was "eggshell taupe No.5". :D -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
I've got the exact same rifle sitting next to me(except you have everything I WANT on yours) and I've done the exact same thing to it except i used spray paint. the krylon paint is great, but I ran out and no one seems to sell it anymore, so I had to use rust oleum which dosn't hold up against anything as well. lookin forward to seeing it again in future vids.
be careful spraying on critical parts such as the trigger parts etc. you will add thickness to the parts and could cause them not to fit and or malfunction
Paint build up around the edges of the floor metal throws everything out of whack. Trust me, same gun, same thing. Once you start shootin a 300wm you don't want anything left to chance AT ALL. That rifle can make a shoulder bleed.

Quick tip, charcoal (not the stuff that's pretreated with lighter fluid but the plain stuff) helps pull the fumes out of the air. Or big tubs of baking soda.

Which is better, DuraCoat or GunKote? Does duracoat smell bad because its not heated?
With GunKote can you use a blowlamp instead of the oven?

I LOVE Nutn's vids!
I wanted to do the ACU Camo on one of my shotguns. Do they supply a stencil for you to use for the camo? I hope so, because ACU would be nearly impossible to freehand.
Thanks!

Ray

i was wondering about coat thickness. does coating your firearm greatly affect tolerances? i see that coat thickness id .25 - 1.5 mils so that being said, what are some of the tighter tolerances in an AR-15, Glock, etc?

will this hold up on a glock polymer frame ? holstering and unholstering from a kydex holster over time?
bZberetta 1 year ago
@bZberetta
not sure.
i have (among others) a kimber custom tle that i duracoated tan for deployments.
it is an all steel slide and frame with custom grips, magwell etc and i use a serpa (kydex-i think) on my vest and drop leg holster.
it has been in and out of the holster daily for 3 twelve month deployments and the holster hasn't made a single mark on it.
it has got some small marks from being dropped, thrown, fired etc though.

can you remove it?
softypowder 1 year ago
@softypowder
i don't know if there's a good recommended solvent for removing it but it is tougher than any paint i've ever seen.
best bet would be to sand blast it (glass/walnut-whatever).

If you do this often, wear nitrile gloves and better ventilator mask.

Try blue loc-tite fancy on that piece that pops off. It's still service removable and it wont budge ever again during use. I use it on some bolts and screws on my airsoft weapons. they are gas blowback rifles and on full auto they tend to vibrate loose. the blue loc-tite is awesome and cheap at $4.95 and a little drop goes a long way.

lol spaycan propellant sucks for all purposes.
u can kinda help it along by keeping the bottle in a bucket of warm water so as to
keep the temperature change from messing with the spray too much, but its still gonna suck.
lil tip: u might try using a car tire as a source of propellant if u can find the parts needed to attach the airbrush.
Whisper6911 1 year ago

But it did seem to work you pretty well
UltraXryder 1 year ago
@UltraXryder
Just get a different pressure regulator. Nutn is probably having problems with that hose because of over pressurization. A water/oil separator or filter is a good thing to run for spraying. If you don't have/need a full sized compressor you can get a air brush specific compressor for around $100. Check out TCP Global, Harbor Freight, hobby shops, etc.
snakeii0 1 year ago
Thanks for the input I was at a local hobby store yesterday and the cheapest "hobby compressor" they had was $330!! so I went ahead and bought a Craftsman compressor that looks just like the one in this vid and it had a regulator build in and I bought a water/oil sep too
Thanks again
UltraXryder 1 year ago
Right on about the spray paint. We hang our junk from coat hangers and spray paint it, then take it out. The edges and raised parts show wear first, but we don't really care, we'll hit it again, it gets the job done.
Good vid, looks fun if you have the time to do it right haha.

a compressor with at least 35 psi , metal is advised to be glass blasted. i found a wmv file online with the full instructional video in about 10 parts. basically it says desgress blow off, paint with airbruss or LVHP spraygun let dry 20 min per layer in oven or hour without . there is also a clear matt for blue metal

nomoreliesfrom44 2 years ago
this could be worth a note here ; in the auto paint world it is an absolute must to wear skin protection and breathing apparatus w/ epoxy paint . if you breathe enough it will harden on the surface of your lungs and you will suffocate to death . some elements are also cummulative and are absorbed through the skin , a worthy warning to the viewers .

Just one little pet peeve of mine: It's a 5 TO 15 scope, not 5 BY 15. The BY would dictated the size of the bell, probly being 44mm from the looks of it. 5 TO 15 BY 44

this stuff is awesome,no comparison to spray paint.
oneshot700 2 years ago
I've got the exact same rifle sitting next to me(except you have everything I WANT on yours) and I've done the exact same thing to it except i used spray paint. the krylon paint is great, but I ran out and no one seems to sell it anymore, so I had to use rust oleum which dosn't hold up against anything as well. lookin forward to seeing it again in future vids.

I sent ya vid response of some of my weapons I've refinished. Dura-Coat is great stuff when done properly. Great job by the way!
xmsurvival 2 years ago
be careful spraying on critical parts such as the trigger parts etc. you will add thickness to the parts and could cause them not to fit and or malfunction
parrott15 2 years ago 5
Paint build up around the edges of the floor metal throws everything out of whack. Trust me, same gun, same thing. Once you start shootin a 300wm you don't want anything left to chance AT ALL. That rifle can make a shoulder bleed.
TVRFan11 2 years ago
Can you use caliper paint also? Bake it in the oven?
Oraenxienael 2 years ago
If you take it apart or cover the essential areas that shouldn't be duracoated.
