  • Canada is *NOT* asleep any more! Canadians have awakend up from their political slumbler and see that DEMOCRACY IS NOT 'BICKERING' or 'SQUABBLING'. People all over are fighting for their Democratic Rights!

Peter Russell - You're right on, man! Loved your video and please include this young woman. Seniors and the Young will give Canadian Parliament a makeover the BULLYING NEANDERTHAL BOYS on the HIll will *NOT* forget! Amen.

  • The lame music score really undermines the power of the message. I kept thinking this is one of those sarcastic commercial spoofs the entire time. Turned out it's a straight-faced one...

  • @NarsilRenewed It IS a commercial spoof -the "I Am Canadian" campaign the Molson did a few years ago...

  • Remember that it's always possible to vote against, if you can't find anything concrete to vote for. Strategic voting can help avoid the outcome you don't want. Minority governments aren't necessarily a bad thing. Better than a majority for an outcome you don't want.

  • @Borodinify You make a good point. So, if we go below that 30% and become illegimate, then what happens? Are we stuck in a dictatorship, or can something be done?

  • I believe that the only way we are going to get decent change is from the young people voting. A lot of older people like myself are stuck and vote the same way regardless. The two main parties know that if the young people vote there will be huge changes and they would rather do the same old thing. So please get informed and vote for the kind of change you want your Country and ultimately your life to be like.

  • @ChrisJustinParr What's wrong with caring about people, Chris?

  • @ChrisJustinParr And what do you base that on? You do know that many students WORK, right?

  • Unfortunately no matter who you vote it ultimately matters little given that the political and merchant elites are more or less of the same thread. The government bows to big business, not the populace. One clear example of this are the Alberta tar sands.

  • @ChrisJustinParr Hm. A flip, close-minded and confrontational comment from a Harper supporter. Now there's a surprise.

  • wtf does this even mean? Your vote doesn't mean shit, you get to choose from 2 sides of the same coin, someone who is a fascist pig selling out to corporate interests or a socialist retard that only gives the illusion of helping people but actually cripples the nation. You vote with your dollar.

  • @DuncanL7979 So don't vote for the two main parties. If enough people vote out of the 2 main parties things will change in the long run.

  • @6648rome but for better or worse?

  • @makortoff doubt that it would be worse but possible it could be better. At least it would shake the main parties to do better if they want to get in again. It can't be good to be arrogant enough to think you will get the job all the time. Then there is NO Respect of the people's needs.

  • Canadians need to all wake up. It seems the kids may be waking up, after all we have the most to lose. How long should we let foreign corporations steal our resources for profit? To all you conservatives out there, explain to us and yourself why you will vote conservative. Is it because you are christian? Is it because your parents did? Is it because you are scared of terrorist? Do you want to see your tax dollars go to bombing foreign countries because TV said so? Think for yourself, then vote!

  • April 13th Ekos Poll

    Conservatives 33.8%

    Liberals 28.8%

    April 14th Nanos Poll

    Conservatives 38.9%

    Liberals 31.1%

Contrary to the commentators here, there is very little evidence Harper will get his majority. He has consistently been unable to maintain 40% of the vote. The gap between the two parties has reduced by 4.2 points since the previous EKOS poll (April 6th) and by roughly 3 points since the Nanos polls began.

  • @rway019

Whether Harper (or Ignatieff for that matter) forms a majority or a minority doesn't really matter. It's been business as usual regardless of which party has formed whatever kind of government.

  • The point is to EDUCATE yourself so you can make a better choice, NOT insult each others' political choices.

  • @MrMitchy24

Harper types have been winning since the mid-1970s. No use in crying now.

  • Funny touch, using the British near-anthem 'Land of Hope and Glory'.

  • @aerocabin and you think that not voting is going to change things? You, sitting in your living room, is going to change things? Okay, so you don't vote. Please tell me what you DO do to bring about change then? What other avenues do you participate in? Or are you too apathetic for those as well?

  • @greenjourney1

Parliament survives on the legitimacy that we as voters grant or refuse to grant the institution at election time. No one knows what the threshold is, but a Parliament resting on 30% voter turnout is dangerously close to not being able to claim legitimacy. That is why they encourage you to vote, for anyone, just vote - because western democracies are experiencing a crisis of legitimacy. Not voting sends an active message that the current system is illegitimate.

  • @greenjourney1

Not voting is doing something; that is, not putting one's support behind a system that for the last 40 years has harmed people and the environment no matter which party has been in power. The charge of 'apathy' is just a way for voters to feel better about their impotence as they walk to the ballot box to give their endorsement to a broken system.

  • @Borodinify I'd love to see if you have the balls to tell our veterans, that you piss on their sacrifices.

  • Comment removed

  • @BoredomCorner

We honour the sacrifices of the armed forces - and those now fighting for democracy overseas - by staying diligent about our democracy, by not carrying on with the habitual voting that has only led to the erosion of the gains they fought to protect. Veterans didn't fight and die so we could vote, the fought and died for so that our votes would be meaningful. We need to realize what the Egyptians understand: voting without change isn't democracy. That's how we honour veterans.

  • @Borodinify Unfortunately armed and violent aggression AND defence will never produce suitable leadership. Violence, even in the name of self-defence of a nation, never solves problems but only fosters further trouble. Soldier worship just reinforces present sentiments glorifying war.

  • If you really love this country do not put a CON in CONtrol who's CONtempt is a disgrace to our nation and to our people. Please vote on May 2, please get your friends who don't seem to care to vote with you! We can all have a better Canada as opposed to a CONada and the Harper Government of CONada. Be a proud Canadian and stand up for democracy. People are dying for it, literally, all over the world. STEVE, it's time to LEAVE!

  • @17moon7

Sounds more like a pep rally than a political argument.

  • @Borodinify It's a statement of fact. You're the one who wants to sulk in a corner, and you're bashing someone else's maturity?

  • @BoredomCorner

Just looking for arguments. "Yeah Voting" and "Harper Bad!" aren't arguments. If I was sulking I wouldn't be here.

  • BRILLIANT!! Should be shown frequently on all TV channels!!

  • Aerocabin-----tsk tsk. By not voting, you are basically saying you are okay with how everything has been going...that you agree with how Harper and the others run things. The Green Party stands for the very things you say we have lost, which, is true that we have lost many of our liberties without people even knowing. But if you don't vote, then you are okay with it all. Don't be so jaded and complacent!!! Get out and voice change!

  • @greenjourney1

Quite the opposite. When you vote you are saying that you are OK with how things have been going for the past 40 years in which voting has only resulted in the social and environmental degradation the video talks about. Abstaining from the vote is the only way to say that you do not approve of the way the party system handles these problems.

  • @greenjourney1 Does it sound like I'm "okay" with how things have been going? Are you at all curious why people don't vote? It seems you prefer to label non-voters so you don't have to think about it. By not voting I'm withdrawing my participation & consent to be represented/governed by the thugs who call themselves "government".

The Green Party most definitely does not stand for property rights, they want to steal my property and redistribute it to their friends as much as every other party.

  • Don't trust strangers to represent you in the most important aspects of your life, be a dignified individual and represent yourself by staying at home on election day. Don't give your consent to be represented by these sycophants. Voting gets too much credit for being a virtue of democracy, it isn't. What made "democratic" societies great at one time was property rights and a system of justice that upholds them, neither remain in Canada. Save your dignity, DON'T VOTE!

  • @aerocabin And that's how Harper would get a majority. I'll know who to blame, if that happens. Thank you.

  • @BoredomCorner

Don't get hung up and distracted by Harper. Direct your attention to the conservative governance that both Liberals and Conservatives have wrought on Canada for decades. This didn't start with Harper and it won't end with another election.

  • @BoredomCorner Actually non-voters routinely win elections. If it were truly majority rule, there would be no government, only individuals representing and governing themselves.

If you're not pleased with the outcome of the election, be responsible for participating in it. Don't hold me accountable because you assume something substantial could ever come from this antiquated political system. I want to opt out of all benefits and burdens, but this political system imposes itself on everyone.

  • @aerocabin How the fuck do NON-VOTERS win elections?

  • Comment removed

  • With Harper winning the debate last night we should see a Conservative majority this time around .

  • @imN0Ttheone Harper simply deflected questions, was annoyed with the whole thing, and DEMANDED that Canadians just accept his corrupt and despotic behaviour.

    He didn't win it.

  • @BoredomCorner Harper kicked ass in the debate and now he will get a majority .

  • @imN0Ttheone Harper dodged every single question -- in what way, is that kicking ass?

(oh right I forgot who I was talking to -- Harper could be caught masturbating to puppies being fed into a wood chipper, and you'd still think he was the greatest)

  • @BoredomCorner All 3 major polling firms said Harper was the winner of the debate . Before i thought Harper would get a majoity but now i gurantee it .

  • Arrgh! You got the flag colors wrong!

  • @Borodinify this is about more than voting. It's about telling our politicians what we want to vote for, and building the people power to hold them to it. Apathy is doing nothing and wondering why things don't change. Voting is necessary but not sufficient.

  • Voting is what got us into this mess in the first place. The social and environmental ills mentioned in this piece are the product of 40 years of voting, prior to which people actually put their lives on the line to make democratic gains. It hasn't mattered what party forms government.

We need more people willing to reject the cynicism and apathy of marking a ballot every four years. Abstaining from the vote is a way of revoking your endorsement for a system that is not working.

  • Comment removed

  • @Borodinify Yes, thank you! I will not participate in the system either, it doesn't matter what party we vote for because the government always wins! We need less sheeple not more! come on people wake up

  • @Borodinify WRONG.

Doing nothing, is what got us into this mess in the first place. A full third of Canadians didn't bother to vote, last time. Guess what? That's how Harper got in.

  • @BoredomCorner

There is no correlation between voter turn out and changes in policy. The social and environmental degradation that the video talks about has advanced regardless of what party has held power and regardless of voter turn out. In 1979, we had an incredible 76% voter turnout. In 1993 we had a 70%. In 2008 we had an all-time low 58% turnout. For the poor and the environment it hasn't matter how many voters turn out or what party has formed government. If you want more of this, vote.

  • @Borodinify

I understand your sentiment, but apathy is never a good method for motivating or realizing change. I'd prefer it if you were promoting violent protests than simply saying "don't vote".

  • @joobydoo

Abstention isn't apathetic; it's a responsible citizen activity. In fact, recent history suggest that real apathy is voting every five years, impotently hoping that change is going to come from a small set of people sitting in Ottawa. It never does, yet people keep voting, seemingly out of habit. That's apathy.

  • @Borodinify It seems to me there IS a correlation btw voter turnout and policy change.... as voter turnout has decreased, these issues have gotten worse. It has been proven that around the world, lower voter turnout means a win in the pocket of conservative governments. Apparently (in general), conservatives tend to be be more partisan and have identities tied to conservative parties. Liberal leaning voters tend to vote according to actual policies.

  • @ichcannicht

If it were true that low voter turnout was "a win in the pocket of conservative governments" then we would expect high voter turnout to mean a win for left-wing governments. The highest voter turnouts in Canadian history (and the lowest) have produced Conservative and Liberal governments. There is no change.

  • @Borodinify It might help if you got the leanings right; the Liberals are centre-right.

  • @BoredomCorner

You're missing the point. It doesn't matter where their platforms place them on the political spectrum because all governing parties are forced to govern from the right.

  • Excellent!

    "That's what we want"!
