Doesn't Clarkson show himself up with the comment about being owed 42 billion pounds? oh wait, he'd already done that joking about his mother being old...
Expert on the history of glass, i dont mean to be rude but where would this really be useful other than the off chance like now? such a strange profession to have i cant imagin theres many haha
@captianmorgen It's a tendency on modern history to hyper-specialize due to overabundance of sources. I knew a guy who studied the wool trade of a northern england town between 1604 and 1611 for 40 years an hasn't finished yet.
@captianmorgen i dont want to act like a know it all but i think these profession help new industries in research and development. for example u need a plastic jar that can stand 2 billion degrees of heat, they help you to go back in time and see what compound they used 200 years ago and see if you can make a compound of plastic that can stand that kind of heat with materials available then and now by mixing them together.
I used practically the same bottle in the natural science section of a museum, to put in spirit preserved specimens. I think they were called ducth jars, not Kilner bottles. Outrage!
Does anyone know of any good sites or books that talk about the medals that were given out at the London Exhibition? I was just searching for information today about it because of one of my ancestors. It's only briefly mentioned in this episode, but still kind of neat to hear about it.
Some of these family stories would seem to be of no interest to anyone other than the subject descendant in the episode. This seems like one of those cases, at least the narrative is being told.
Colin St John WIlson designed the British Library. Not his finest achievement I have to admit. Go see the extension on the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester. That's everything the British Library isn't. Small, beautifully finished full of meticulous detail.
Mason jars and Kilner jars are actually two separate things. Mason jars have the metal screw lid with the separate metal plug ringed in rubber. Classic Kilner jars have a big metal screw top as well but a glass plug (ringed in rubber) instead of a metal plug. We have both here - my Gramma had classic Kilner jars and my whole family does preserves.
Yes they are - and you can purchase them online, I've seen the type Jeremy's referring to, with the hinge. I'm afraid I don't do preserving, so I don't know if it makes a difference in the seal, but I'd imagine a screw top would be tighter?

Its seams to Jeremy much more important to find out about the Kilner Jar rather than his ancestors lives.

in america, the kilner-type jar is called a 'mason jar.'
we also have the hinge type as well, but i dont know what their common name is.
