I am looking for some traditional songs to learn to sings with some dancer friends of mine. This one is lovely - could you tell me about the background vocals? Did you record yourself singing the background vocals or did you find it somewhere. I have tracked down the lyrics of this song. Could you tell me what the background lyrics are? Mahalo
@schanteuzer The rhythm makes this one a challenge for novice singers, but it's a good one! Listen to Iz' version, too for the proper way to sing it. The background words on the chorus are "ahahana, ulili ehehene, ulili ahahana".
@SusanLRife I don't know how to describe the strum in terms of down and up. I usually just listen and copy and I think in terms of setting up an eight-beat rhythm, like a drummer would do, for me to sing over the top of. Sorry that I'm not much help.
My mother lived in Hawaii for 3 years in the early 60s, so I grew up in Arizona listening to her old hula 45s, one of which was Ulili E by the Honolulu Police Glee Club. It was always one of my favorites. Thanks for sharing yours, and kudos for adding the background vocals! To me it just wouldn't be Ulili E without them!
hey Jesse....thanks for sharing this great song. i was wondering if you could list the chords that you are playing ?.....i think it is C, C sus, and F ...
@lovetimothyrandall You are correct. The chords are C, F and G7. The Csus4 is used to create the riff. Iz Kamakawiwo'ole uses the C-Csus4 riff in other songs, such as "Hele on to Kaua'i".
Thanks, Philip. I don't fully understand Hawaiian, so I learn it word by word. But if I have any advantage, it is having family members who speak thick pidgin, which helps me shape the vowels so that I'm fairly close to correct pronunciation.
Is that you singing the refrain, too? I love this mele. You did it so well...the `ukulele especially sounds good. Jesse, you've outdone yourself this time.
Absolutely beautiful!

Thanks! There MUST be a way of slowing the speed so my brain can grab the rhythm!

That's lovely. I am very strum challenged; can you help with the D-U's?
