Looks to be running on the same concept of the IBM punch cards (you might be too young to remember those) with the holes in them...this is, in effect, a kind of computer, just not the modern one's we're used to. ;) I believe the forerunner of the modern computer was created for census taking, which, I think, used the punch cards in 1881 invented by Herman Hollerith.
