Yup. Bruce Lee told Joey Orbillo that Joe Lewis was the best point fighter of his era and he told Dan Inosanto that Mike Stone had the most talent of any martial artist of that time. Chuck Norris was the first point fighter to use combinations on a consistent basis and he relied on timing when competing in the point circuit.
Despite winning more point tournaments than any fighter in history, Joe Lewis was probably a better full contact fighter than he was a point fighter. From 1970-1971, Lewis won his first 11 full contact or kickboxing bouts, all by knockout. None of his opponents made it past the 2nd round. Looking back, it seems that the point scoring system did not adhere to Lewis' strengths as a fighter. For example, smaller fighters such as Chuck Norris and Bill Wallace had great success against Lewis.
Both Norris and Wallace did not fear Lewis which was a advantage! (For the record I love Lewis. His kicks HURT! And proudly own Force Five where Lewis fights Bong(BILLY JACK) Soo Han
The following were Bruce Lee's thoughts and/or comments on some of the point fighters of the 1960's.
Joe Lewis was the best fighter of that era.
Mike Stone was the most talented fighter of that era. Chuck Norris had the best timing and Louis Delgado had the best assortment of kicks. Lee stated that in a street fight, the last two guys he would want to face would be Jim Harrison and Mike Stone. In terms of this video, Lewis used his 40 pound weight advantage to power through Mullins.
Also, 4eva, point matches were only one of the tournaments he fought in. Others here have told you that he fought full contact, but you don't seem to know the difference. PKA and ISKA kickboxing in the 80's was the same as boxing only with kicks. No ref calling a stop for score a point. Lewis fought bare knuckle matches. That's about as "street" as it gets. Either way, why don't you challenge him? He's in his 70's now I think and he'd school you without breaking a sweat.
4eva. Clearly you aren't familiar with Joe Lewis' career. He fought full contact. He also fought bare knuckle matches. I was lucky enough to attend a seminar of his back in 2000. If you ever met the man you wouldn't be talking smack about him on the internet. Lee trained with Lewis. They had a tremendous amount of respect for one another. t if here were alive to see you spewing off about Lewis he would be the first to speak up and tell you that you don't know what you're talking about.
Dude, for your information, Joe Lewis was in some real altercations outside of the ring. Saying Joe was just a point fighter shows how much you don't know about Joe's career. Look at his Full contact matches. You can find them all over youtube.

the key to it is proof it. right? joe lewis never proofed that he was able to be effective in the street. because on the street are different rules. u can bite u can use what u want to defeat ur oponent.thats tough. thats what bruce lee was all about.toughness. joe lewis did sport tournaments we all know from karate kid. one hit one point. thats it.lee never did tournaments because it was never on his mind to do that. on the other side lewis never had the eggs to accept a real *street* fight.
joe lewis boxed, and did full contact. So a guy in front of 7/11 smoking and drinking would be able to take him? I got it all wrong. why train? I going to hang out on the street. Ive seen many point guys in street fights in the 80's and they did Very well.
@tonyvalente the movie clip look like a chunk is missing. The first two were side kicks, but the third kick looks different. You can compare his recovery, and body movements. All I see is after the guy got hit. Looks sort of like he got hit with the left rear leg and not the right leg. does not look like a side kick.Has this video been altered?
@tonyvalente mr valentine, there is no point in wasting time with a punk like that! i know many freinds of mine that enter tournament fighting, ive seen them in street fights, they are great fighters, this idiot doesnt have a clue, he just listens to the majority and makes a decision, without knowing a thing! of course there are rules, im sure a good martial artist can differentiate between street and tournament based fighting.
@Brucelee4eva if you look at kata, forms, you see many moves that you cant use in a tournament, bruce lee never invented these, in my opinion, bruce took away the soul of martial arts.

joe lewis never had the eggs to accept a real fight because he was afraid to lose reputation. karate the way joe lewis did was sport. but on the street it doesnt work out. real fighting as it is is not in one or 2 hit the ref give me a point and im the winner. lol accept it. joe lewis never had a real fight. maybe what he had was full contact but one or two hit then the ref yelled break. i saw a lot of fights where joe lewis was with the back at the ringend and only the refs break protected him
Joe Lewis has records at least. There are videos of full contact kickboxing with him. Bruce Lee isn't known for street fights. He's known for his movies and fitness. Bruce Lee is awesome, but there aren't any records of him fighting any "quality" fighters, let alone of him fighting anyone at all, but some young punks. Your argument isn't worth pushing because your only evidence is "because I say so." All in all, Joe Lewis was in point karate matches, not street fights. Street fights are a waste.
trust me no guy on the street was going to whip joe lewis. 215lbs of solid muscle and mean as fuck{back then} training every day in karate, boxing and came from a wrestling back ground.
do you have the eggs to fight a legend like joe lewis? your a fuckin idiot. joe is probably one of the greatest martial artists of all time, for some punk like you, putting him down! why i ought to kick your arse!!!!
all this rubish about street fighting, joe is more of a match for any street punk!
joe lewis never accepted a street fight. he never accepted any challenge. he never had a *real* fight. what he had was a rule based one or 2 hit fights where the ref give him a point or not. thats not fighting.thats sport. lee always had real fights 4 life and death without any ref or rules. he was a lot harder than anyone accepting any challennge from anyone not knowing where they come from or how good they are. he accepted and finish. joe lewis never had the eggs to accept a real fight.
bruce lee beat wong shun leung in his own house and this guy was world known as the champion of street fighting in asia and in the whole world. he said bruce lees jkd was good and worked really out 4 him. but only 4 him because he had incredible abilities. he said bruce lee was a very experienced fighter. im pretty sure.lewis with no experience in the street would lose.he never had fluid fights. after one hit the ref shouted break. thats not a fight thats a joke.
joe lewis full contact champion, bruce lee did not have that many fights, there is no evidence to state the facts youve mentioned, bruce was great, joe lewis was also a great champion.
this is not bruce lee.way too slow and the technique is way too bad. the guy in black had problems controlling his body. its a stiff technique, way another technique bruce lee had. bruces technique was a lot better and joe lewis had a lot of problem that he is only known because he met bruce lee. but he never would give him credit as a fighter because his reputation is on the line
As a real fighter, Joe Lewis deserves lot more respect than Bruce Lee since the latter never executed any technique against a live opponent, let alone knock out.
u dont know. u never saw bruce lee in a real fight. same with lewis. he never saw lee in a real fight. and somethin inside of lewis was interested to find out why so many people think that bruce lee would kick the hell out of him. thats when he began to anylize the jkd techniques. but when bruce lee last met joe was in 68. a lot of time 4 a nature gifted bruce lee to develope his fighting style. joe lewis never accepted a street fight. he always had the rules beside him^^ counterstrike?^^
Have you ever seen Lee fought for real? If not, then how come are you so sure Lee would have an edge over Lewis in a street stituation? There's a huge difference between "I only fight for self-defense" and " I can beat so and so champion on the street." The latter has been used by so many of Chinise martial artists, Lee included because they are afraid of losing face.
This film is backwards. Lewis usually fought left foot forward. Mullins ALWAYS fought right foot forward. And it's definitely Joe Lewis. I read about this tournament about 20 years ago in a BLACK BELT reprint. April 1987, if I recall correctly. The tournament took place in New York City in early 1967. Chuck Norris eventually won it. The BB article and photos -- and concurrently, this film -- establish beyond any doubt that the man in black is Joe Lewis.
Hey guys I think what tonyvalentine was trying to do was show how similar his kick was after he trained with Bruce. You can see the influence when you look at Joe's point fights.
u dumbass that is bruce lee taken from the bruce lee archives, pls change the fucking title of the video. You must have rip it off somewhere, it's posted before.
What puzzles me about this video is that Lewis almost ALWAYS did his side kick with his LEFT foot, not the right as he is shown here. Left foot side kick, righ reverse punch. Somehow this video is backwards!
Lewis continued to get better as he got older. In FacttThere are videos of Lewis sparring in the 90's against a fast MMA fighter dustin etan seen on google. Lewis transitioned into a boxer later on after the 60's.
The title is misleading. Lewis learned his side kick from the legendary master Kinjo Chinsaku while he was stationed in Okinawa as a young marine. Lewis's training session with Bruce was rather strategy oriented instead of simply adding different techniques. By the way, the tournament took place before Lewis began training with Bruce.
Actually that's not true. While true in one sense. Joe did begin his training with Kinjo however if you would ask him he would tell you that the way he does a Side kick was from training with Gordon Doversola who taught him how to win a tournament with only 2 techniques, the side kick and reverse punch.
Joe Lewis said he learned his side kick from Kinjo in many aritcles as well as his first book, "The Greatest Karate Fighter of All Time." I believe Lewis learned how to spar from John Korab, and after he returned to the US, he improved his overall fighting skills with Doversola and Bruce Lee.
This has been flipped. The person in the black gi is Joe Lewis, the othe karateka is Skipper Mullins.he was thought to be the best kicker in karate at this time. This was filmed at a tournament at the Manhattan Center in NYC in 1967. The ref is the Goju pioneer the late GM Peter Urban . So no it's not Bruce Lee nor is it a Chuck Norris student.
