Magnificent work. The composer really came away with deep impressions of those wild places. The rest of us write postcards, but M. composed his experiences for all to enjoy. The beginning especially bleak and haunting.....burns into one's brain like a tragedy of yor.
im a seventh grader and im secnd chair for first violin (and im against some very good eight graders too) and were playing this song and MUCH MUCH harder ones so im rly anxious for our concert!!! :P
mendelssohn has wrote this at a trip to scotland...at endimbourgh...i have heard a better version....this actually(xD)at germany...but i like this one two...the reeds must be louder in my opinion...but still is mendelssohn!
what a beautiful symphony by the great Mendelsohn, his famous scottisch, well what can be said about this beauty that hasn't been said, the first movement is sublime and misteriously introduces the magnificent work.
Simply for balance. This arrangement was common up until the early 20th century, especially for classical and romantic repertoire. Modern conductors from Mahler and Toscanini onwards have wanted a heavier bass balance. Incidentally, many European orchestras (Vienna, Czech Phils) often use this formation.
i think this is also known as a baroque set-up... someone correct me if im wrong. But this was common in baroque orchstras and still is done today (well as u can see)
i also found Achim Holub by chnace! I am not going to lose him by chance! It is amazing how he "pulls" the sound out of the orchestra! He shows personal communication with each member of the orchesta!
Great interpretation. I found Achim Holub videos by chance today. Really enjoy his recordings. Hope to see and hear him conducting in a live concert sometime in the near future.

Mendelssohn's music, instead of being brilliant (as in sparkling) music, as is his norm, is astonishingly beautiful here.
