The question is not about how the brain enables an organism to interact, etc. Plants, sea anemones, etc dont have brains but these organisms can still interact, adapt and response to changes and capable of feeding themselves to survive and reproduce by using all kinds of ingenious methods which require brain of a scientist. A MYSTERY!
Hallibutbouy, neuroscientists tend to gather from one belief, which is that the brain is where our concsiousness is. It's called physicalism. They don't say that we are merely observers under control of our brain, rather that our concsiousness resides in the brain and through it we control our actions.
A person can still be regarded through relations and experiences with the outer world. And a person can still be regarded as something more, even though our concsiousness is in the brain.
Our consciousness is NOT in the brain. It may arise from the brain, it may depend on the brain, there may even be physical correlates of every mental state but our consciousness is of the world. I am perfectly familiar with physicalism. It encourages people like u, & many respected neuroscientists too, to speak as if consciousness is a thing. The problem with all this talk is that it encourages less attention to be paid to the actual lives of people & defer focus on the content of our skulls.
I'm not particularly interested what the mind IS, I am more concerned to find out what the mind is CAPABLE OF. I realise that since professions about the mind can be self-fulfilling neuroscience is pretty limp and potentially dangerous without a prior and ongoing investigation of the possibilities of the mind from people who are using them. Standard physics-type investigations into the inert world of matter cannot do the job.
Besides that I am a holist because I believe that one cannot understand something without looking at its relations to the world. Again this means nueroscience falls short of its ambitions of a science of the mind because what makes the mind what it is is its extreme variety and depth of relations to the world, and this cannot be known through looking at brain processes. If you can prove me wrong please try, I will be grateful.
@Hallibutbouy Halli, some of your ideas are also part of cognitive psychology and connectionsim. Those studying connectionism believe that our minds come from the brain. But they also say that there isn't a specific place in the brain from where concoiusness comes from, rather from a collected different parts working toghether. By learning from our experience, cognitive science think every individual is unique and that we need to pay attention not only to the brain but the individual as well.

Does the brain control all our actions? I dont think so - we control our actions, it is not as if we are a mere observer, not the participant in our lives. A brain is nothing but a mass of goo without the rest of the human being, a bowl of curds does not control anything.
I am not a brain, I am a person and persons have bodies and lives and relationships and a world - brains do not.
It is not the source of our emotions either - our experiences IN THE WORLD trigger emotional responses.
Brains are not 'in the world', brains are in our heads. People have worlds and people have brains too - brains do not have people!!!
What a load of trash, a few neuroscientists begin to get somewhere with the brain and they go haywire. They can't stop themselves from wandering into metaphysical territory rather than sticking to their empirical predictive and explanatory work. Anyone who has been misled by this should watch John Searle's lectures or at least Prof. Ramachandran. Please.
@Hallibutbouy You're confused between intelligence and consciousness. Intelligence is the product of the brain and consciousness is up for debate. If consciousness just exists as a part of the universe then a rock has consciousness but the rock has nothing to be conscious "of" we need a brain to be conscious of the world.
That is total nonsense mate. Please tell me how u define intelligence & if u want 2 make ur line of argument stand u should not use anything that comes from the lived world but only refer to the brain. If you achieve that then ask urself how anyone ever came to the conclusion that such brain processes were the 'physical correlates of intelligence' or something of the sort - they would have had to have identified what intelligence was BEFORE they even looked at the brain in order to correlate
I continue ... rocks can't be conscious, not because they don't have anything to be conscious of - they are in the world and thus if they had a mode of being conscious then they could be conscious of the world they were in - but because they have no way of being conscious of anything. A man can't walk if he doesn't have legs, right? A woman can't be conscious if she doesn't have a nervous system, yes? My legs don't CONTROL my walking do they? My eyes don't CONTROL my seeing do they?
I recommend watching this documentary. It is a practical guide of the "mind-level" working aspect of the brain.
Use this knowledge and take great care and responsibility about how YOU create your nevron network and also the mental image of YOUR reality. Be careful what you believe or even watch on tv. It doesn't really help your POSITIVE mental image of the world ;)
I WOND3R how the WORLD would FEEL, if ALL were to KNOW they ARE THE CREATOR OF IT ALL!
This was sexy! I find anything about the brain rather... amazing!

@Hallibutbouy I thought you were talking about dualism, but apparently you're just high because none of what you're saying makes sense.
