BECAUSE, if Kamina didn't die, Simon, Kittan, Viral, and rest of the guys wouldn't be manly and they would have never been acknowledged as "good character" as we all call now. Their death would have meant nothing. Y' know why? Kamina inspired every men in GL. Simon especially became a character similar to Kamina. Kamina is like the symbol of Gurren Brigade and that is why Kamina had to die. Basically, Kamina's death made everybody a man.

and if there is no Simon, then there is no need of Nia.

and w/o Simon and Nia, there is no need of expanding story beyond 15 episode (or16). Which means whole story woulda end @ Lord Genome's fall.

Another cool thing about Kamina's death; the graves you see in the epilogue. They look like the holy cross, which doesn't make sense; but then you see a cloth hanging onto the top.

It symbolises the sword-and-cloak on top of Kamina's grave.

His life and death was that significant to everyone in the show.

And when he got hit, the explosion resembled a cross, and when the spear wounded him, it was on the side.

Maybe I'm just overly analyzing it, but Kamina would make the best Jesus ever.

Gainax is elite, they almost never do series longer than that, with the exceptions such as "Nadia- The secret of blue water" and even that was planned through and through. thats partially correct but if you look closely you see multiple of everyone not just 2 its like a pic of their character development like Simon when he was young then when he was the leader of the city then when he fought against the anti-spirals and if you look in the far back you see simon and kamina when simon left at the final episode
