I'm not saying the bee gees don't deserve credit (they wrote these great songs) but their demos (which they peformed with Rogers in mind to start with) do not sound as good as the finished album. As for a commerical success, in 1983 Rogers was at the top of the music world, The Bee Gees were not, so it is obvious a Rogers album had the potential to do better than a Bee Gees album.

Barry knew what he was doing, he wasn't going to write the same songs with Robin and Maurice that they wrote for Barbra, he moulded them for the artist, hence the similarities to their past work in style, he listened to it all, which is why he changed Islands In The Stream from a Marvin Gaye style soul ballad into a Nashville style country track.

At that time in the US, a Rogers album was morel ikely to strike gold due to airplay, but recognise that the US is not the entire music world.

I know the US is not the entire world, but Rogers was (and is) and international star. He was the Garth Brooks of his day and one of the biggest selling artists on the planet in the 1980s; and remains one of the most popular acts of all-time, as do the bee gees.

I know Barry moulded the songs for the artists he worked with, that was one of the original points I was making.

This song was written by Barry and Maurice Gibb. There was a bootleg of demos with Barry singing all of the songs from "Eyes...;" however, I think the song may have been started by Maurice and completed by Barry. Had the Bee Gees kept this one for themselves,I think the finished recording would've featured Maurice on lead vocals. It just feels like what would've been a Maurice song.

Rogers did a good job, it's one on my favorites but there wasn't very much Bee Gees material as a group in the 80s, just a lot of solo work and writing for others. The Bee Gees's lack of hits might not have been the case if they had kept working together as a group throughout the 80s instead of recording solo and writing for others.

I dissagree. A lot of the success of this album is down to the fact how hot kenny rogers was at this time, and how accepting his audience was to the material. It is a given he was a much hotter recording act in the early 80s than the bee gees and a lot of these songs were written and arranged to suit Rogers vocal style. Barry Gibb couldn't wait to work with him. If the bee gees had never worked with KR these songs would not have had the same feel and may have even been scrapped!

Rogers was hot, I'll give you that. But, Barry Gibb, as a producer with Karl Richardson and Albhy Galuten were a white hot production team at the time. The Bee Gees were inactive as a group because of Barry wanting to work as a producer and songwriter, rather than as an artist. But, the Bee Gees's songs would've had the same feel if they had recorded them because they were using the same musicians on their own recordings at the time and Rogers' recording didn't stray too far from the BG demos.

I have heard the Bee Gees demos and they do not sound exactly the same as Rogers. Also bare in mind they were recording the demos for him, aimed at him, at his request. Also Rogers was not Kylie Minogue and the bee gees were not stock-aitken-waterman. Rogers had creative input into those songs. So no, without Rogers and his input, the feel would have not been the same. Barry's decision to be a producer was greatly influnced due to the bee gees declining success as a chart property at the time.

That's a fact I'd go some way to dispute; for example, in Britain, Islands in the Stream, the most successful track from the album, went to number 7, whereas Chain Reaction with prominent Barry falsetto backing vocal went to number 1 in many countries throughout Europe including Britain, while You Win Again also went to number 1 in the UK and Europe from the Bee Gees come back album.

Robin had a number 1 album and single all over Europe just before Eyes That See In The Dark was released.

Rogers himself considers "Eyes That See In The Dark" to be one of the best albums he made. This is all a case of "she said, he said..." what matters is the final outcome and the album sounds very similar to what Rogers had done with the first edition in the '60s and '70s, long before he ever worked with the bee gees.

Anyway, besides all that the Bee Gees were doing a good job of avoiding the attititude that had developed around them from US Radio stations by releasing records through other people, while Maurice and Robin set up in Europe, all three coming together to do the songwriting for each sets of work.

The Bee Gees were on the verge of collapse during the Living Eyes recording sessions and it didn't produce good results, so getting away from each other in the studio was probably required.
