  • I'm just now reading The Game Of Thrones and I promised myself I won't watch the series before I read it. I won't even check out how the actors look like, I hope, because I kind of want to imagine it myself.

  • @TheHannaFactor Yeah same I just caught up on all of the books last week and now I'm starting the series

  • No one makes it rain like Roger!

  • Whatever happened to this? There have only been two newsletters. =/

  • nerdfightastic

  • I just want to say the best thing that has happened in a while just occurred. I received my order of books (huzzah) from Barnes and Noble. Sitting so wonderfully inside was a signed copy of 'A Fault in Our Stars'. I was in such a fit of excitement that I may have scared my mother and dog.

  • @ihartyoutubification it means dont forget to be awesome. And welcome new nerdfighter! You may want to go back and watch some old videos in order to get all the jokes. Which its self is a joke. Which is jokes. Im going to stop now. Bye!

  • 159,000 views O.O oh...my...god...

  • I'm the 159,000 viewer

  • *ding!*

  • Does this pledge include television adaptions? Like Game of Thrones? (Still trying to find time to read them before I watch, I promise!)

  • DFTBA

  • @vlogbrothers Well If you can't give me money, I guess I'll settle for a more amazing and entertaining videos.

My people will call your people to make the arrangements...

  • i know, i know. this comment is a bit late. but come on! "making it rain, like roger"!??!?! awesome reference. LOVE it Hank. and, thank you for including the random, nerdfightastic, hilarious things you do. :)

  • My BrainCrack idea is Nerd Pilgrimage and it has FINALLY come to life. I don't have a lot of resources (but thankful for the few who have helped me) but we're doing ok. My only snag is the stupid wiki idea I had. Part of the site was suppose to be a huge open source for people to add info on nerdy (and maybe a few non-nerdy) conventions, festivals, and events. I made the wiki but then realized I HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO EDIT ONE... So, it's just sitting there now, wondering where it's creator is

  • Is that Sango on the top right??

  • Hank, I checked the website out and it's amazing. I've always said that the book will always be better than the movie. It's good to see people agree with me. I made the pledge haha. DFTBA. Cheers.

  • Hank you talk so fast.

  • "Can't never did until he tried."

    -Grandma, 88

  • You have thrown more things at your wife than Charlie Sheen has his "godesses".

  • @TPRJones I completely agree. But no one I know understands what I'm trying to say.

  • I spy an InuYasha poster on the door.

  • Am I the only one who kept reading the website as "Reddit1st"?

I was very confused until Hank said the name out loud.

  • I think everyone in Nerdfighteria should be able to use Nerdfighteria as a resource. Isn't that what it exists for? To make the world better, and if a nerdfighter has an awesome idea to do that all they should have to do is ask the community for help, because we're the kind of community that actually gets things done.

  • i really wanted to strangle that piano. then bash it in the head. great idea tho

  • Thanks for the advice.

    RSS feed, please, also :)

  • @hughcharlesparker Correction - RSS feed that works, please :)

  • But ... no! That's completely backwards! You have to see the movie first whenever you can. That way you can enjoy the movie and then later be blown away about how much more rich the book is. If you do it the other way around you just end up not enjoying the movie because compared to the book the movie will be so much ... less.

Time to start Watchit1st, I guess.

  • @TPRJones I agree

  • Not big on reading...

But O well. :D Nice video!

  • how many times does hank push his glasses up in this video?

  • I read all of the Harry Potter books before I watched the movies. I think I would have enjoyed it more if I had watched the movies first. I've seen all of the Lord of the Rings movies but haven't read the books. I'll read them and see. Also, I've read The Hobbit and we'll see how that turns out next year. I think there's some exceptions to this rule!

  • Sooo since we nerdfighters helped you with the idea... do we get rewarded with money? :3

  • @JinxWheresMySoda if you have seen the program you would understand.

  • ahaha commerical kings <3 :)

  • NERDFIGHTER PAUL MAKES HIS IDEAS REAL:

Professor NotOne! teaches Boredom, Floods, and Potatoes.

  • "You failed!" "And it was AWESOME" :D this reminded me of Meet the Robinsons...keep moving forward :D

  • the piano key was very distracting o.O

  • you used adobe fireworks, sorry you just lost all my respect for you.

  • Success is an illusion build out of a lifetime of failures.... you're welcome... and you may quote me on that...

  • Does this could for plays that are made into movies too?

  • Just destiny I suppose.

  • Respond to this video... Hank.......maybe you should get your glasses adjusted, (?) You push your glasses up quite a bit. Just a suggestion. :)

  • Comment removed

  • You should take your readit1st thing, and move it just a LITTLE to the left, because it says, at the top "read read read read read" but it starts with a D, so it looks like it starts by saying "DREAD READ IT 1ST"

I do not dread reading it first.

  • did anyone notice the woman dressed weirdly on 0:08????

  • @thefreak9967 haha I saw that too.... subliminal messaging, Hank?

  • Well i consider myself a nerd , BUT its in a different way so i dont read books (i know i should) unless its something like 'steven hawkings a brief history on time'

But ill sign up anyway just to help.

  • Dear Hank, I know you like comics so, have you read "The Umbrella Academy"? I love it so, you should try it. :)

  • Dude. You're too fast.

  • In honor of Read It first I'm going to all the movies I love, and resently found out where books and reading the books.

  • I've already made a promise to myself to always read the book first. Not that the movie ruins the book (that only happens sometimes) but because I love creating a new world using my imagination. If I see a movie before I read the book then all I can imagine is the actors and actresses instead of my fabricated humans.

I just made the pledge (again), w00t.

    DFTBA.

  • @ThamyaKaroline

That's the problem for me: being inclined to imagine the characters in the book as the actors in the film.

  • Can you apply to write articles on Read it 1st? Because I'm definitely interested in doing that.

  • so many winks - I mean, piano dings in this video. I'm now programmed to recognize winks by the sound of the piano ding

  • so.... does this mean i have to read les miserable before seeing the musical?

  • @TheDancingDegas hahaha as much as I love Les Mis. Not happening.

  • I love the idea!

  • DING

  • I've stated to hum the melody to the piano key every time it recurs.

  • You might have just changed my life. Thank you so much.

  • Readit1st is an absolutely GREAT idea! See how I caps great? :D I also hope your idea goes far. Yay for you!

  • Why you steew wheezy waitew's pianow ding?

  • SeeIt1st can prevent a feeling of disappointment when the movies do not measure up, but healthy attitude about movies and lowered expectations is what's most important when you ReadIt1st. And then instead of COMPLAINING about the movie being different (something inevitable), you can simply DISCUSS the differences. People are more likely to see a movie after reading a book than to read a book after seeing the movie b/c reading requires more time and focus for a story already revealed.

  • Hank, I hope this idea goes far. I'm a big fan and student of film but I also believe a good story begins with spoken and written word. As our culture advances in technology we should endeavor to guard our senses from over stimulation.

  • Yeah I think I'm actually Team See it 1st.

That way I won't get caught up in comparing the movie to the book, and I can still enjoy the movie. What often happens if I watch the movie first and then read the book, I end up enjoying both. But if I read the book first, I don't like the movie.

  • less jump cuts! organize your speech and talk! XD

  • I like ReadIt1st. Having an attitude that the movie must be the same as the book is obviously not good. But if you read the book, you can better understand the themes and ideas. Movies are a whole other medium, and changes will always be made - or else you get, like, Watchmen or something.

  • @AtrumDelorox It doesn't sound crazy. There are a few movies that I have seen that I wish I had waited to read the book because what was on the screen did not line up with what was in my head. if you see the movie first you don't have those expectations.

  • What's the deal with YourPants these day?

  • AHHHHH! Obi Wan is no longer near the Scott Pilrim graphic novels! ;~;

  • The night that I came across you Read It First posts on tumblr I decided to do just so, I have not seen the Help yet because I am wait for my mom to get me the book x)

  • my dream is to be able to make a video and put it to youtube and get 303 views in the first 30 minutes

  • DING!

  • I'm with @Atrum Delorox . I like to watch the movie first because, if I don't, the movie is almost always a letdown. I am going to sign up for ReadIt1st, though, because the newsletter sounds interesting and awesome!

  • I know of many movies that are better than the books they are based on. For example, Contact by Carl Sagan, or The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy, or The Milagro Beanfield War by John Nichols.

  • Oh my gosh. RhettandLink

  • Hank please, no more piano key!!!

  • @ImperialGeorge Piano key for the win ~ (Representing importance)

  • @ImperialGeorge True this! It's super annoying.

  • @ImperialGeorge I like the piano key ding. It entertained me.

  • No one makes it rain like Roger!

  • As much as books are important, I find more suspense in films, I would rather enjoy waiting for the next plot twist than reading the next chapter. I see the books as like deleted scenes.

I did not read the Harry Potter books until after the movies, except the fourth, and I have to say I enjoyed the 4th film AND book less because of it. I think it's all down to preference.

Read it 1st should not be put above seeing it first just because you like it that way yourself, people are different

  • Nobody makes it rain like Roger.

  • You use fireworks ... whoa.

  • I thought this website already existed?

  • ... You have an orange Pygmy Puff.

  • F means fantastic

  • Wheezywaiter piano wink? woah.

  • this inspired me :)

  • i love you hank =]

  • Does readingit1st have to be a thing to which you actually pledge? Reading the book before seeing the movie doesn't make you superior or smarter or more sophisticated than people who did it the other way around.

  • @mayalouise1251 No, but you acn ask them to tell you when new movies from books come out.

  • winning feels so much better when you have already had the taste of failure. so yeah, Failure is Awesome

  • failure, is AWESOME

  • Oh no, THE BANNER SAYs: DREAD READ!

... where the "READREADREAD" part meets up with the logo.

  • @atrumdelorox i always thought that too but my friends thought i was crazy! nice to know im not alone NERDFIGHTERIA POWER ~sidenote does anyone else think they should make powerrager like rings on for nerdfighteria? it would be like an awesome way to great a fellow nerfighter!

  • hank, y u no winking?

  • I usually prefer to read the book first, but I've found that in some cases seeing the movie first enhances my reading experience. Especially with movies based on classic novels. I don't think I would have followed Pride and Prejudice as well as I did if I hadn't seen the movie first.

  • @merchickety I'm reading Pride and Prejudice now, and you're absolutely right. You get a little lost in all the old terms in the book, but when you can just remember how you saw it it adds clarity. Plus, sometimes I go and see a movie because it's interesting and I didn't know it was based on a book.

  • Ding ding ding! Awesome idea is awesome. And so are Nerdfighters. And you, Vlogbrothers!

  • Ding

  • NOONE MAKES IT RAIN LIKE ROGER!!!!

  • I would change readit1st to just read it. Regardless of the order, just read the book. If you don't watch the movie, you didn't watch the movie, but I think you should always read the book, whether it was before or after the fact.

  • I always sniff my fingers after scratching my balls.

  • right after watching this i decided to make my first vlog thing on youtube :S

could anyone who sees this and has the time watch it??

  • the key is just do it!

  • MAKE IT RAIN LIKE ROGER!!!!! THAT'S A RHETT AND LINK REFERENCE!!!!

  • i like how its the wink note from wheezywaiter:D

  • Also, I don't believe you should read the book first, because then if they miss major things out in the film, it will annoy you. If you see the film first, then read the book, you're more likely just to be happy enjoying the new things that the film missed out.

  • not unperfect, imperfect...

  • So no one else in the world has this resource... Don't we have eachother? :D

  • your wife rocks

  • I so wanted to read The Deathly Hallows before seeing the movies, but it just didn't go that way. :(

    I like this idea.

  • @Shabei09 - I haven't actually seen it, I watched the trailer and just decided it would be morally damaging - also, from what I've heard it's pretty average. It's set in like present day America and Will's family all bully him and Maggie Barnes is his high school crush! Not good at all.

  • I totally read the title was : How to make ideas real: Reddit.com

  • @AtrumDelorox no that doesn't sound crazy:) that way you can enjoy both. Do it which ever way you like:D

  • I'm not sure about Read it 1st. Almost always the movies never measure up to the book. Since that's the case, shouldn't we enjoy the movie without any prior knowledge if it just so happens that we haven't read the book first. That way we leave the theater thinking how great the movie was rather than thinking that it was missing x, y, z and pronouncing how it ruined the book throughout the month. I'm not saying we shouldn't read the books, but See it 1st not Read it 1st. Does this sound crazy?

  • @AtrumDelorox I agree, I developed the opinion a while ago that treating the movie as a separate entity than the book is a great way to make sure you enjoy all your experiences, instead of being a fault-finder, or being biased toward one medium of entertainment. I love books and always have and always will, but I feel uncomfortable detracting credit from the wonders of cinema.

  • Respond to this video... Movies are (or can be) awesome just like books are (or can be) awesome. I say, watch the movie, read the book, and enjoy yourself, because that's the whole point!

  • @AtrumDelorox I completely agree as I've now probably ruined all future seasons of Game of Thrones (song of fire and ice) since i saw the first season fell in love with it and read all the books

  • @AtrumDelorox This actually doesn't sound crazy, but it's all about how you think of it.

  • @AtrumDelorox Well, good point, but you've already spoiled the plot. So the book loses a lot of its emotional impact.

  • @IreneAdlerCrazy actually its been proven that spoilers don't actually affect how you react to a book :) but if that's what it does to you... then i'm sorry, seek treatment, cause i feel both should be enjoyed :P

  • @AtrumDelorox My thoughts exactly.

  • @AtrumDelorox I'd rather say that we need to demand more from our movie creators. They simplify plots, remove complicated explanations and this results in a lesser product. Trust the viewers more and leave in the complicated stuff! Yes, The book is _ALWAYS_ better so I'd much rather experience the better product in its best form, and the lesser product in a slightly 'spoiled' way.

  • @AtrumDelorox i see where your coming from but it sounds like you just saying to expereince the less enjoyable thing and block out/spoil the the one that may have better qualitys ranging from a few better differences up to a more complicated, engaging plot with more and drastically improved scenes or even changing the entire feel of the story. So by that logic, why would you want to see it first? if anything a better idea for your perspective is a pledge not to complain about book-based movies.

  • @tehGCINA or that works too :) i've tried both. either way i don't hate on the movie or find either disappointing, but apparently i'm one of the few

  • @AtrumDelorox Yes, because it's far worse when a movie ruins a book than when a book ruins a movie. And books are much better 99% of the time

  • @AtrumDelorox More often than not though, watching a bad movie doesn't make you want to read the book associated with it. The book may be excellent, but the movie terrible.

  • @AtrumDelorox I agree with this. Although I would say "read it too."

  • @AtrumDelorox no, you're not. but sadly, your way is why literature is going out of fashion...

  • @AtrumDelorox yes.

  • @AtrumDelorox That makes a lot of sense, I guess it's all in the approach. And if people do read the book first, it would be good to keep an open mind in the theater. Movies and Books Are different mediums xD. I'd still readit1st though, just personal preference.

  • @AtrumDelorox I disagree. I have experienced the exact phenomenon you have described a number of times, but I have found that the annoyance that comes of a movie being different than the book fades as you become more accustomed to process of reading prior to viewing. Eventually you learn to appreciate books and movies in different ways and as different interpretations of the same story. Plus, thinking that it might make you enjoy a movie a bit less is never a good reason to NOT read a book.

  • HOW TIRESOME AND PEDANTIC

  • I'm wondering where my "Reward with money" is...

  • invisible wheezy waiter winks every time text appears

  • are you thinking what im thinking

  • Hey, uh, Hank? Could we as Nerdfighters get Wheezy Waiter to meet Scarlet Johansen? We've done bigger things before - we should be able to do this too!

  • Hank, I cannot get over how cute you are.

  • top right corner... is that sango from inuyasha?

  • I just pledged to read it first. :)

  • your "ideas" stick to your wife? giggity

  • did anyone else notice the creep mist at 3:39

  • 0:13 to 0:17 THATS WHAT SHE SAID

  • Wheezy Waiter wink sound???

  • The Rhett&Link: Commercial kings reference made my dayyyy!

  • @ablestmage I never said that the error was not deliberate, nor was there any need to get condescending - I was just pointing it out. And there is a difference between prescriptivism, and applying recognised linguistic rules pertaining to morphology.

  • @quillhallow - applying "recognized linguistic rules" is essentially prescriptivism. Descriptivism is recognition that, historically, language has been used and developed over the span of mankind as fluid and descriptive of the message, morphing as its usage changes purely by experience and whim, rather than first being defined by authorities and then regulated for proper/official use. Also, any suspicion of condescension in prior remarks is purely by your interpretation, as none was intended...

  • :) i <3 vlogbrothers

  • uhm...im not sure id read the book before watching the movie...simply because im not a book kind of guy...not saying, though, im a movie kinda guy, i like to think of myself as more of a "i want people around me to be happy so that im happy" kind of...guy.

which i guess works out just as well as anything else...except having robotic limbs...that's pretty cool :)

please take the time to read this, i know its length is intimidating and ...im not really helping so ill stop now....now...nownownow

  • darn, I thought that ding at 0:20 was an E but it's a B! Curse you, perfect Fourths!

  • Unperfect?

  • @tankletterj did she say yes

  • I like the sound effect! It keeps me from clicking away to other tabs, lol. (Don't worry, I always listen...and if I don't, I rewind.)

  • Dear Hank

Please have your glasses adjusted, or I will have to get bigger to compensate for the slide factor. This may make people mistrust you.

    That is all

    Kind Regards

    Your Nose

Ps Can 'Reading has been proven to improve memory and make me like you more' be put on a DFTBA tshirt, or do I have to get out the marker pens again?
