  • very interesting video, thanks.

  • Do you think the low harvest of Tomatoes is due to the fact you have them against the fence ? Would only get limited Sun depending on the Direction its facing

  • This is awesome! Now I know what to do for my garden. Great job!

  • wow!!!! love ur garden man!!! i want to grow water melons!! how much sun do urs get!! im gelous of ur garden!!

  • cool, i have seen tomatoes grown upside down, but thats the first time i seen a complete garden like that, great idea, thanks, i think i know how im doing my garden next spring. so , do you fill the buckets, then put a lid on em , then start the plants, through a hole on the bottom, or what?

  • @steveeb1269 Thanks. I cut the hole in the bottom then put the plant in there and then put dirt on top of that. If you search "how to make an upside down container" on youtube I think you can find some videos on how to make them.

  • @14dollarz oh, ok. i know what your saying. cool. thanks you very much. yeah if i can keep my tomatoes plants off the ground, maybe then i wont have to deal with them damn gaint green calipillars, and the other varments. thanks again..

  • @steveeb1269 Please let me know if you have any other questions. This is definitely a fun alternative way to grow veggies. Some plants do better than others and they don't produce as much as regular ground planting but it does work.

  • @14dollarz ok, thanks, will do. i mainly grow tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, and onions, but nothing ever bothers my onions., i added to my subs...

  • @steveeb1269 I found that the determinate types of tomatoes did best along with cherry or smaller tomato varieties. Those and peppers work great. If you see my next gardens you will see I went to raised beds, but upside down does work. Thanks a lot for watching.

  • @14dollarz cool, yeah my current garden is a 10 x 12 raised bed. im just tired of waking up to find 2 or 3 tomatoes plants almost completely stripped, by them big green cali,s.. yeah i dont grow the bigger ones, i like the roma,s , they never get bigger than plum.

  • @steveeb1269 WOW I JUST STARTED A GARDEN IN FLORIDA I LOVE YOUR GARDEN , I HOPE MY GARDEN IS 1/2 AS GOOD AS YOURS

  • Great video. Really inspired me for next spring! I love the rate of speech! Might as well just bang it out. Get 'err done!

  • @hassman789 Thanks for the comment. I'm already looking forward to the spring as well :)

  • Haha, I like the part about the sugar snap peas!

  • Great garden. The wild panning of the camera made me dizzy though, but keep sharing your progress - great to see!

  • Why do you use buckets instead of planting them in the ground? I mean the upright plants, obviously not the upside down ones.

  • you're rate of speech is fine good job in the garden

  • Haha, my sister names her plants too. We had a cabbage this year that she named "Cabbage Annabella". The year before that was "Cabbage John". She would even get mad if you didn't include the "Cabbage" part in their name.

  • Squash is best if you dont let them get much bigger than 6-8 inches. You want them before they get mature seeds. Hers's a tip. I personally have tolerated the outter peel of the large tomatoes sliced for sandwich. I have been boiling water and dropping the tomatoe in for 30 seconds. Remove from water and the peel just slides right off. Nothing but pure goodnness to slice. Great video!

  • nice plants!! keep doing a good job!!

  • Great video!

  • SLOOOOOOOOOOOOOW DOWN YOUR RATE OF SPEECH. lol Nice garden.

  • @Machiavelli1513 IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII CAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNTTTTTTTTTTT. Though I have tried. I think my later videos have gotten better.....maybe.

  • @14dollarz Haha thanks for not getting defensive. At least you are loud enough, my problem is pitch/tone. Keep up the great work with your garden. I would like to utilize your hanging methods in my backyard. Cheers.

  • @Machiavelli1513 I talk fast and that is just the way it is. I have no problem with it.

  • @14dollarz the funniest interaction here : )

  • @14dollarz You dont talk that fast.

  • @14dollarz Hey I'm from London and we speak fast too. You sound normal to me bud!! Nice garden!

  • @MrBoggerly Thanks for the comment :)

  • @Machiavelli1513 I dont think he talks particularly fast. ?

  • nice garden:) how did u make the upside down containers?

i will like to have a few in the condo patio.

    help please

  • @MsSamj Just search for how to make an upside down container. You will find videos.

  • Comment removed

  • well i really dont agree with what u siad im 14 and ive been growing strawberrys for a long time with my dad for us they harvest preety quikly i would sugest u to try to get the leafs and stems off the floor and just put sticks under them and if u do get strawberrys dont touch the strawberrys and decreases the growth of the plant and the strawberry

  • you should def try growing some onions. they do absolutely awesome in raised beds. beautiful garden ya have there bro

  • @dunno414 I have them in one of my videos for this season. Thanks!

  • How do you water all those containers?

  • @ILuvCaroline I used a hose on the tops of the containers. But this is a few years ago and my setup is way different. Not more containers.

  • Are you growing any greens at all?? Like kales and letuce, broccoli or something else you like? They grow super easy! Oh, carrots are easy too, but they take really long

  • @Illchangeitlater No. I don't really eat enough of them. Plus here in Georgia spring and fall are so short they wouldn't grow for very long before they bolted.

  • Do you mix your own soil?

  • you shouled try growing potatoes upside down

  • Holy cow you talk fast! LOL What's the name of those small clusters of tomatoes? Are they called cherry red tomatoes? love your hanging plants! cool idea :)

  • It is nice to see someone so passionate and excited with the fruits of nature! :-)

  • do you have a.d.d

  • looks greatt....but i got soooo motion sick!

  • @theherdmentality . Thanks. Take some dramamine before my next video :).

  • thanks for posting, such a great idea for small spaces like he one I haved. :D

  • what do egg plant taste like ? and where do they like to grow im in uk,ive never even seen one before , thnaks

  • @kevbro321 . Well it is hard for me to describe as it tastes like eggplant :). I can't think of another vegetable that it tastes like. I has the texture somewhat similar to a zucchini or squash. The flavor is mild and eggplant can be made into a lot of different dishes.

  • @14dollarz did you pickle those Q cumbers

  • @fjared36 . I didn't pickle any from this garden which I did last year, but I have been pickling this year. I have some videos on that too.

  • are the strawberries bonnie? and i live in SC and my zuchinnie wont grow because a bunny keeps eating the flowers lol...i named the bunny zuchinnie:P the only tomato plant we have only has 3 tomatos and is almost as tall as the portch! we had to wrap it around itself...

  • nice.... ur pots are to small to produce a lot of tomatoes.. they can take up some serious room. i have a feeling u know that though.....my topsy turvys have been breaking... stress on the stalk and they just fracture.. lol... tomatoe plants arent really made to be large and suspend ive found

  • @partyongarth420 . Ya i figured that out last year. If you haven't seen my garden this year check out those videos. Plants are much larger in my raised beds. Thanks for the comments!

  • Super garden....!

  • Looks good man!

  • Impressive, Jason! Wow, don't you love growing your own?

  • omg impressive. I've watched all the vids up to this point and earlier you say you've never grown anything before - are you sure?! i'm super inspired, wonder if I can do this same thing in va. At any rate, my questions are 1) when initially planting upside down did you secure the plants with anything like a sponge/syrofoam? 2) how often do you water in general? 3) I guess you tend to the garden, everyday, right? 4) and when you update, these vids are in like, two week intervals, right?

  • @charliem0013 . The only thing at the base of the planters is a coffee filter to keep the soil in. Watering all depends on how hot it is and how much rain falls. Very tough question to answer. I'm in the garden every day, but I don't really do work every day. My updates are random, but every 2 weeks or so. I don't have a set schedule.

  • i love putting them upside down so i can plant on top and bottom u should try it

  • Zucchini flowers saute with olive oil garlic and onions are delicious.

  • Hey dude, why dont you try strawberries???

  • @NASIMNASIM . I had them in my raised bed last year and have them again this year. So I do have them.

  • AAAAH YOU ARE FRICKING AWESOME! hope this works as well in Oregon!

  • @14dollaz.. 2 years on the strawberrys.. just keep re rooting the shooters back into your bed. How are they this year?? I have 4 pots of strawberrys on a 2nd floor patio..fertilize and wintered properly, its year 4 and I still get fruit. Love your vids. thx.

  • sorry bout the double post by the way,my computer was actn funny=)

  • hi i was wondern how long it took for your watermelons to sprout,my seeds have been in the ground for about 2 or 3 weeks now soo i was kinda wondern...thanks,~Ky

  • @Kymdn95 . I didn't grow mine from seeds, so I'm not quite sure how long it should take. Most plants sprout in 2 weeks or so.

  • @Kymdn95 I started seeds inside and I would say it was only 4-5 days before they sprouted. You may want to call it a loss and either start new seeds inside or just grab some plants.

  • are you doing another garden this year?

  • @rlal85 . Yes i am. I've posted new videos already. So check them out when you get a chance. We have had a nice growing season so far. Thanks for watching.

  • I managed to grow a watermelon to the size of a bowling ball. But it was all white inside and no fruit.

I grew them in NY State, so this probably isn't ideal for growing watermelon.

  • Frank, Word UP!!!!

  • Last year I did all Sq Ft in raised beds. I used black plastic mulch and hardly ever had to water, garden was great.

I'm in an apartment now and doing the patio thing with buckets and containers. How often do you water, I assume every day. Seems like a few days without water would be pretty rough on everything.

    Just curious

  • During the summer it is every day. It gets really hot.

  • I have no green thumbs so am enjoying your video's on container gardening...good for you.

  • Hey thanks for watching/subscribing. I had no green thumb either. But the container stuff is pretty simple with the soil I used. You just put soil in a bucket add the plant and water.

  • Well first time watching and I'm still checking it all out....very impressed indeed and I'm going to try some things I've never tried before. Living in Manitoba we have a very short growing season but maybe I can pull off a few peppers yet lol...thanks again.

  • Youtube is a great place to start. I learned pretty much everything here since you can see the people doing it and not just ready an article. With out seeing how easy people can start gardens on youtube I may not have started. If you need any information let me know. And if you check out some of the folks I'm subscribed to they have cool gardens too.

  • @14dollarz unfortunately, i believe in the 80's the media starting making "gardening" difficult and "crafting" easier. Hence- we have billions of scrapbooking crap being sold, and less delicious food being tended too! Gardening is great fun- veggies, flowers--Good Luck everyone-- going to weed..LOL

  • I love this!!! I am a beginner and will start with the tomatoe and jalepenos and bell peppers. Is there a video that shows how to start your gardern. Tools you need and how to make these upside down holders?

  • I don't have any videos on how I made my planters, but if you search for "upside down planters" you will find some people that show you how to make your own. It is pretty simple.

  • I used to be into planting a lot. Now its been a long time since I planted anything. Seeing this video makes me want to go back to planting vegetables. If you're looking for some delicious eggplant recipes I've uploaded some.

  • Buford is a nice area. Not as hot and buggy as central Florida. You have created a well diversified Garden. I found the hanging pots where the wire attaches eventually break. I switched to metal chain hangers which have worked very well.

    Thanks for the inspiration.

  • Gardening with chemicals. Wow what a challenge! :P

  • Mango salsa is awesome with jalapenos and your cilantro. Add some lime juice and red onions! Oh yum!! Goes great on top of tilapia. Damn I'm making myself hungry. LOL Doing a great job!

  • Sounds like you need to put up some recipes that I want to try :). Keep them coming.

  • Hey Jason, You should add some recipes? :) I'm curious what you're going to do with all of your produce!

  • Haha that is a good idea. I'm still waiting on a bunch of tomatoes to turn red so I can start trying different types of salsa. I should be able to make a bunch of different kinds with all the types of peppers I have. So hopefully the onslaught of red tomatoes will be here soon :).

  • Jason where is my update i can't wait lol...

  • Haha. It will be out today I promise :).

  • nice big peppers !

  • Your zucchini and squash are huge! Did you start them from seed or bought the plants and transplanted? My zucchinis didn't go into the ground until May, but it's been really slow getting them to get some fruit on them. They're also still a little small. Do you fertilize?

  • They were transplants and have gotten to large actually :). Sorry yours are taking a while to grow. I saw you are in GA too so not sure why that might be the case with the same weather. Mine took off like crazy. They were tiny 4 weeks ago. My video 7 was when I put them in the square bed and you should see how small they were then.

As for fertilizer the Miracle Gro Soil has 3 months of fertilizer in it, but i have started recently with the Miracle Gro Liquafeed.

  • i just planted my tomato plant in Miracle gro too..so i dont have to fertilize for 3 months? and i have the liquid fertilizer too and i mix a cap with a gallon of water how often do i water with that fert mix?

  • It should say on the bag how long it lasts. Mine said it lasts "For up to 3 months". As for the liquid fertilizer check the instructions on that one. I have the liquid spray that is already pre-mixed so it's a little different than yours.

  • Garden looks great!

I like the variety of vegetables and growing methods with the raised bed, upside down plants, and even the buckets full of plants. Awesome!

If I were you, next year I'd plant the zucchinis out of the square foot plot. They just get so big that they crowd everything else... I wonder how they'd do upside down? I guess it'd have to be a pretty BIG bucket.

Very nice, I'll be watching the progress!

  • Thanks. Yeah being new to gardening I'm trying a bunch of different things to see what works.

You are definitely right with the zucchini. I had no idea how big they would get. I did have some upside down, but they really didn't grow too well so I pulled them out to put in things that would grow. My older videos has them in there.

Perhaps I'll add another square bed next year just for zucchini/squash :).

  • I learned that lesson this year - I spent the end of the winter really trying to plan out the space I had to use. I figured I could get two zucchini plants in a 4x8 foot section of the garden. When I went to the farmer's market to buy them though they were sold in four packs. I planted them all, and now they're getting pretty big for the space I allotted. But they're really starting to produce now and without any issues so far....so I guess it's not so bad!

  • My thoughts right now are (if the wife approves) to go to home depot this week and start 2 new zucchini and 2 new squash, each one in one of those big blue containers. I will dig out space on the hill in my back yard and once they catch up to the plants in the beds I will take out the ones in the beds.

They grow really quick so they should catch up soon. The ones in my bed are shading out all my strawberries. What do you think?

  • Another great vid Jason, thanks for letting us all share and learn from your experiences with gardening. This is also my first year gardening (hot peppers mostly) and i've learned so much in just the past several months watching youtube gardening videos. I have so many plans for next year, I can't wait! Keep the videos coming!

Shout out to Frank the watermelon! :0)

  • Thanks for watching! Everything I learned was pretty much from youtube as well so it is nice to share the wealth. I found some more end rot on my cubanelle and anaheim peppers after I did my video so I lost about half of them, but still have a bunch on the plant. So I'm still not doing something right :).

I'm like you and already have plans for next years setup :). Let me know if you post an garden vids of your own!

  • do you think i could put a tomato plant and a pepper plant in the same Topsy Turvy? i have two tomato plants in there now.

  • Well I'm no expert, but the only issue I would see is the 2 plants fighting over space (root space) in the soil. I do have have some of my planters with 2 peppers in them and I think they would grow larger if they were each in their own planter. They should still do ok though.

You did say you already have 2 tomato plants in the topsy turvy already so I don't think I would recommend adding a third. That might be too much.

  • Have you given any thought to how you'll preserve your extra produce? I tried glass jar traditional canning last year. What a mess! This year I'm using my dehydrator. From the videos I've seen it looks like a viable method. I've already tried dehydrating some of my spinach, and it seems to work well. From what I can tell, dehydration will work for just about anything if done properly.

  • I was thinking if I have extra that I don't give to family/friends that I could try glass jars. I'm thinking if I have enough tomatoes I'll try making a big batch of salsa to jar.

  • I tried doing salsa last year, but added a few too many peppers and it was only good for cooking purposes. A few months later I lost faith in my sanitation and sealing, so I dumped the lot. A couple of days ago I steamed about two or four weeks worth of green beans from my garden, then ran them through the dehydrator. Afterwards, they all fit into a half quart jar. I rehydrated a few and they didn't look as fresh as they did after steaming, but certainly good enough to cook with.

  • Nice garden, and it's fun to watch it change over time. I'm guessing the bed is doing better because it has so much more soil (and it's cooler and shaded) than the little upside down pots. The Square Foot Method is really cool. (You could raise one and try it upside down next year, lol)

  • Ya I think having more soil and room helps the bed plants grow larger too. Hopefully people will be able to see the difference to help determine if they want to try one method and/or the other.

  • I had to learn the hard way about the peas being cold weather crop. Mine died about a week ago. Who new? It sure didn't say so on the packet. I did get a few peas before it died though. It was very easy to grow.

Anyway your garden is looking awesome, I will be trying those cubanelle peppers next season they look great for stuffing wth some rice or cheese or something!

  • Ya at first they grew pretty quick and haven't grown an inch in the last 2 weeks. No big deal though.

I haven't had a cubanelle pepper yet. I'm hoping they will be large enough by the end of the week. Thanks for the comments!

  • Hey Jason great to see the growth. Here in Connecticut ive had sooooooooooooo much rain its ridiculous. Ive planted 4 watermelons but so far little growth they are in the grown where ive been throwing my grass clippings so the soil should be good ill try some miracle grow soil around the 4 because its really wet slipery soil.

  • We had been getting rain the last couple weeks, but are in a pretty dry spell right now. With the heat I'm having to water almost every day.

  • You know that ichiban is 'number one' in Japanese? guess that means its highly recommended lol

  • put the peas in the shade. In canada we grow them in the summer. tells you how cold we are.

  • I don't even know if the shade would help. It is now low to mid 90's every day. I'll give them a whirl in the fall when it cools down.

  • Hey Jason!

I'm out in a Chicago suburb of IL and I found RED SPIDER MITES on my tomatoes about a week ago. After the storm of the century last night I'm surprised that they're still on my tomato plants! I can see no visible damage but there are from 1-6 on each flower cluster and maybe two on every other leaf. I want your advice, please respond... (sorry for the caps)

    -Mike

  • Not sure about spider mites. I really haven't had any bug trouble my first year. I do have some squash bugs and just recently purchased "Sevin" brand bug spray which supposedly covers over 100 different types of bugs. Not sure if Sevin covers the spider mites, but you could check it out. You can get it at any major hardware store.

  • Have you tried NEEM oil for the spider mites? You mix the Neem, it's stinky, with an emulsifier, dilute it, and spray it on the plants. (You can buy it blended at the garden store.)

It works really well for most plants (will burn some so test first) and is natural, and it's the best thing I've ever found to get rid of those frustrating little red spider mites.

You may have to repeat every other day for a little while.

  • Looks great, I really like the idea of a raised bed, it seems worth the effort considering the results and the work it will save next year.We had two weeks of cold rain. I'm only getting radish and cold weather greens so far.

  • Ya the raised bed really seem to do well and they are easy to put together. Sorry the weather hasn't gotten too warm up there yet.

  • can you tell me which kind of soil you used in your pots specifically?

And I know this is a weird request, but if you have time, can you do video showing yourself watering your plants? I am wondering on some of mine if I am watering too much.

Everything looks really great. I am jealous. LOL, your stuff is doing way much better than mine.

  • I use Miracle Gro Moisture Control soil. It helps to hold the moisture and also prevent over watering as well.

I'm still not sure exactly how much I should be watering. As a rule of thumb that I follow if the soil is dry about 4inches down I water. Not sure how much exactly, but on my hose's soaker setting I count to about 5-6 seconds.

  • Here in Ohio we haven't had the awesome weather you have but mine are doing pretty good! Thanks for the inspiration. Good videos!

  • Where are you in Ohio? I grew up in Akron. I know the summers don't get the hot weather there until about this time of year. Thanks so much for watching.

  • Yeah those tiny cucumbers will grow into big ones.

Looks good and healthy, can't wait till I can harvest my own tomatoes!

    -Tim

  • Ya hopefully they will grow fast. I planted them later in the season, but should catch up quick. Let me know if you post videos on your tomatoes.

  • You are going really well there. I am jealous of your sunshine. Here, in Ireland, it has been dull for two weeks but we are looking good for next week.

Don't worry about having a glut of vegetables - the only thing more enjoyable than eating your own veg is giving them away, you would think you were giving people gold they are so appreciative and excited about getting home-grown stuff.

(I still see raised beds in your future)

    Best wishes,

    Brendan

  • Thanks. Having the warm weather helps. It does seem as though the raised beds do better then the upside down containers. I'm not doing any more beds this year or anything else really. We will see what happens next year.
