  • I have a macbook and I just upgraded my system to Snow Leopard. I used to be able to record just fine, and now, I've tried everything that it he says, many times, changed cables, and still nothing. I am able to gt a signal, but no sound at all. :( HELP!!!!

  • @bettyan79 What size is your macbook?

  • @GaragebandandBeyond I am using a 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and my memory is 1GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM

  • I LOVE YOU!

  • Thank you, this solved my problem!! ^_^

  • Thanks. This really helped.

  • Electric guitar ->1/4" cable to 1/8" mono adaptor to audio line in on Mac Pro. Good cable. All Garage Band settings as specified. System prefs for audio show Line In (chosen), Digital In, Soundflower (2ch) and Soundflower(16ch). I don't even know what those latter 2 are or what I ever installed that made them appear.

Line out currently goes to some small amplified speakers. Just a bit of hiss that lets me know things are on but NO GUITAR AUDIO! X^b

  • @Strontium105 It sounds like whatever "Soundflower" is, is your problem. But I don't know either so unfortunately I can't be of much help. My only advice is check the OUTPUT in your system prefs make sure that is set properly and turn off anything linked to "soundflower"...if you can.

  • Thanks man, Monitor On solved my problem. ty

  • My macbook pro doesn't have an input hole for audio-in...How else could I get my guitar into my mac?

Before I got my Mac, I was using a Korg PX5D, I tried that, and it doesn't pick anything up, yet it says the input and output is Korg. Everything is plugged in and armed..

    Any ideas?

  • I only have "Built in input" and no Fast track or built in microphone so this doesn't work for me..

  • Today while working on a project I lost the output sound. I've went through all the checks in this video still no output. The only way to listen to the project is to solo each track. I've opened other projects and they work fine. So what's the deal? Any thoughts?

  • Thank you so much for this vid! Really helpful!

  • at 1:28, my midi cable doesn't show up. it just has the internal microphone. does anyone know why or how to fix it?? plz answer!

  • Thank you so much. Couldn't figure out how I changed my audio output but it's all working now :D

  • you rule

  • Hello. I just bought the little converter thing for my jack cable. I did everything you said except the thing with enable/disable recording thingie because, on this new Lion OS that button isn't there, so i don't know what to do :p.

  • thanks so much

  • Useful info man. It might seem obvious but it's worth mentioning that if none of this works it is going to be that there is no input signal. Dodgy cable, volume on amp/instrument, preamp or simply the wrong output jack on the amp or whatever :)

  • @DFineNormal Or with a condenser mic a common problem is phantom power not switched on.

  • @DFineNormal :) good point.... I struggled with getting my ukulele with pickup and pre-amp to work. I thought I had the volume turned all the way up on the pre-amp. Turns out I had it turned all the way down.... oops

  • I tried everything and followed all the steps, and i still can't get any sound :(

  • As a garageband veteran I felt like such a dweeb not being able to figure out what was wrong. You helped. THANK YOU.

  • Thanks a lot!! Really helped.

  • oh man, i think my mac is reading my monster cable which is conected to my guitar as headphones. how do i make it recognise as a builtin input?

  • Hi - I'm having trouble with midi... when I play the keyboard I can hear it fine but then when i record it and play back the recording, i can't hear anything! I see the notes are there - they have been recorded and the volume is up on the track! wtf?!

  • HI Lewin, just bought a Casio CTK720 keyboard and brand new to GarageBand, so please be gentle lol. My keyboard only has a USB port (no MIDI output ports), so when I connect a normal USB-B cable to the Mac, it doesnt show the keyboard!?!?!?! The keyboard says it has "General MIDI", any tips on whats going on? Thanks in advance for your help, your videos are awesome!

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH :D

  • Correction: The guitar cable goes into a simple 1/8 connector

  • cont.

Also, where you have five controls in the track sections I only have three: ‘Mute or unmute the track’ (which turns blue when engaged), ‘Solo or unsolo the track’ (which turns amber when engaged) and ’Click to turn monitoring on or off, or control-Click to open the monitor Menu’ (also turns amber). Whatever I turn on or off I get no sound.

  • I did everything like you showed but still cant hear the guitar. I am, however, able to use the GarageBand tuner which means that the signal is coming through. The guitar cable goes into a simple ¼ connector, no interface. cont.

  • Sorry this didn't help. One of my songs only works when you solo all the tracks. When I un-solo them, I can;t hear anything.

  • hey hey hey... I found a solution for this problem... Try to use STEREO wire and adapter... when i'm using mono, i cannot hear anything... but after using stereo wire, walla... BTW, is there any programs like this for Windows?

  • thankkkss i had a mistake with the audio output, it should be "built in output" instead if my interface XD

    thanksss @@!!!1

  • @gkidcj Glad I could help!!

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Hey Lewin, I have an odd problem that you hopefully hear all the time.

When I record Something through an external microphone, it sounds fine through my computer's speakers, but when I plug studio headphones in, it sounds a bit fuzzy and I get almost no sound on the right headphone. I made sure all my tracks were square between left and right, and made sure my computer settings were set the same way, but nothing works. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  • @GaragebandandBeyond Any ideas as to why my mic records vocals as a delay. When recording I hear my vocals but for some reason it's seconds delayed and isn't on time with the instrumentals.

  • I'm using a Macbook Pro here. I followed all of your instructions and still no sound.

Macbook has only Audio Output right? But it can be changed to "Line in(The one you use to connect your guitar)".

And btw, I can use my Macbook as an amp right? Just connect my guitar to it.

  • Hello, i'm having trouble connecting my Yamaha DTXplorer Electronic Drums, The snare gives nothing, and the kick pedal sounds like a snare, I'm using a MIDI - USB to connect it, please help. Thank!

  • Any chance you can show us how you set up your audio/midi interface settings, my product manual for the E-MU 0404 usb interface shows an entirely different window than what my brand new Imac Pro has for audio/midi setup.

    Great channel by the way.

  • hey. sometimes ill be recording and there will be no volume coming out of my right headphone. even if the fader is at 0. any suggestions?

  • Hey Lewin Great videos I appreciate them very much. So my question is this I have a Fast Track I have set all of the preferences as you suggest and I pick up my piezo equipped instrument no issues but when I switch and try to record my Fender bass of Tele.. I don't get any volume do you have any idea what gives? I know I can mike them but I believe that I should be albe to go direct right? BTW I have GB 08....Thanks for your help...

  • @jimendo45qf So when you connect your tele or bass and then adjust the input control on your M-Audio nothing changes?

  • @GaragebandandBeyond actually I can hear it fine in my headphones I just have very low volume on the track even with the levels cranked... It's strange....I build Cigar box instruments that have piezos same settings same cords and they crank out the sound... Poltergeist?

  • Comment removed

  • @jimendo45qf Hmmmm.... I'm not sure why that is happening. 2 things to try. Different USB cable and if that doesn't change anything go into the AU plugins area (effects) in GB and look for "Peak Limiter". Turn that up to the appropriate level and go!

If you have no idea what I am talking about look for a video of mine called " Exporting from Garageband into iTunes! Get the proper VOLUME!! ". You will see exactly what I am talking about.

I'm guessing the second option will be the one for you.

  • @GaragebandandBeyond okay I'll give that a go.. Again very good information you are presenting. Thanks for the effort I appreciate it.... Jim

  • @jimendo45qf Hey man that was the trick worked perfect. So one more question why is can't I hear the tone change until I play back the track, What setting am I missing?

  • @jimendo45qf I have the same problem, Have you fixed it?

  • thank you this lil fix was a big problem 4 me .good lookin out

  • ok i solved my first problem but whenever i record a track using a 1/4 to 1/8 i can't see the lines and sound waves or whatever. how do you solve this?

  • when i go to my system preferences why don't i get the option for line-in?

  • i get a super high pitch noise when i followed your intrusions

  • yo it still doesnt make sound!

  • i try to plug in directly with my electric guitar but when i plug it in i get no sound from any of the tracks.....whats the problem?

  • You're great. Thank you!

  • Go up to "Window" in the top of GB and select "Musical Typing"

  • I can't hear when i play on the keyboard and stuff like thar. Uknow when you press cmd k
