Up to recently, a Lao village head was selected democratically by villagers. It may still be so now. This village head attended the county assembly of the region called Taseng comprised by a number of villages. A Taseng head was selected by village heads. A Taseng head was a member of a city assembly, the Chuv-meuang. Cities form into a province. Since a village is a basic administrative unit, Laos was 100% democratic. Traditionally, we did and do have a perfect democratic root.

I think there is no such thing as the perfect political discourse. Both Marxism and Neoliberalism have their own beauty and defect. What we can do is to try to understand both ideologies and their limitations and consider the context in which they are being applied. Perhaps the way forward is the mixture of both. Centrally-planned economy has proven to be inefficient but pure market economy also suffers its own set of market failures through a number of externalities.

Teaching young people to be acquiescent is quite easy, if they KNEW the "stick" (punishment) is a whole lot bigger than the "carrot" (rewards for thinking "outside the box").
But here's the sad thing: after a life time of being deferential to the "correct authorities," people become both mentally and physically submissive.
They can't be & won't be thinking: "I am just playing an pretense game; deep down I am really a great, original thinker, and radical writer who aims to shape my society."
. I feel very sorry for many lao teenagers that they never have chance to get proper knowledge which encourage them to express their creativities. In the place where I live, there are many students who have graduated from training schools but are unemployed. This could be one factor reflecting education system
Teachers and student are also being used as the same tools. Many teachers have to be members of political party since they will not be supported and promoted to upper rank even they work hard and are creative.
Teachers and students are never allowed to negatively discus about politics and party in fact they are forced to believe that the party is supreme. But as you know the lao education will never be comparable with other nations'.
I am a teacher in Laos. I clearly understand lao education contents and system.
Education is being used as political tool. Education contents means to teach people to believe that Laos’ close friend is Vietnam and major enemies are USA and Thailand (This should be said in different ways and should be forgive but not forget).

Some of the guys up on the "higher up" didn't seem to appreciate all of the various examples & analogies the good doctor was alluding to, from the Japanese student example to the American experience....
They seemed to be thinking: --- can we just get on with the real business of developing Laos, according to the "correct leadership" & forget about all these silly speeches?

And, further, if it is true that we, as homo sapiens, all borrow from others... Everyone borrows: the Japanese, the Americans, the Swiss, including us Lao people.... why DO WE, Lao people, have to borrow from those who aren't very successful? Teaching young people to be acquiescent is quite easy, if they KNEW the "stick" (punishment) is a whole lot bigger than the "carrot" (rewards for thinking "outside the box").
But here's the sad thing: after a life time of being deferential to the "correct authorities," people become both mentally and physically submissive.
They can't be & won't be thinking: "I am just playing an pretense game; deep down I am really a great, original thinker, and radical writer who aims to shape my society."

Teachers and student are also being used as the same tools. Many teachers have to be members of political party since they will not be supported and promoted to upper rank even they work hard and are creative.
Teachers and students are never allowed to negatively discus about politics and party in fact they are forced to believe that the party is supreme. But as you know the lao education will never be comparable with other nations'.

Some of the guys up on the "higher up" didn't seem to appreciate all of the various examples & analogies the good doctor was alluding to, from the Japanese student example to the American experience....
They seemed to be thinking: --- can we just get on with the real business of developing Laos, according to the "correct leadership" & forget about all these silly speeches?
However, in the middle of the video, the two gentlemen in glasses seemed to pay close & respectful attention.

And, further, if it is true that we, as homo sapiens, all borrow from others... Everyone borrows: the Japanese, the Americans, the Swiss, including us Lao people.... why DO WE, Lao people, have to borrow from those who aren't very successful? Why not use ideas -- from education, to commerce, governance, to jurisprudence -- from the most successful people in the world?

Laos needs more intelligent and REFLECTIVE individuals like this man, a person who's willing to examine his own thoughts --- independent of others, of the "correct leadership" --- and examine the thoughts of others, both "foreign" and "local thoughts," and ask: if the Japanese can do, if the American can do it, if the Swiss can do it, if the Turks can do, if the New Zealanders can do it... why not us, too?

Why Laos people have to suffered so much by the hands of it own government and foreign policies. For too long Laos people have been robbed and tortures by it neighboring countries ideologies and it is still OK to the Laos' government. If the current government is going to support those wicked people by letting them continuous struggled then they are out of their mind. They need to start caring for their own people and provide protections every ways to prevent the disadvantage toward people.
