being in the back you have the advantage of surprise, that is why people go slow, to force your opponent to pass you. its also unreasonable to try to just sprint for 3-4 laps because its basically like doing a sprint from a kilometer out.

Not just that, being behind gives the drag advantage from the opponent.

when u can start behind someone else u are sucked with him so it's easier to pass him because u have more speed
