  • Nevermind aliens looking down on us for our superstitions, think about future generations !

  • "The best way to go is a time machine, but my wife, Romana, said the Council of Time Lords didn't want to lend us one." :D

  • Ah good, I'm not the only one who has a problem with the baby. Get a sitter, dump it on grandma, something. You're child won't miss you for that hour.

  • @zeldaofarel If you watched it Id assume you both saw Dawkins get handed the baby- and then realised the ONLY reason the woman had it there was because it was one of his props..

  • They really gotta stop allowing people to bring babies everywhere. It's incredibly annoying.

  • @RedLine353

I just started watching this. Please tell me this entire video doesn't have yet another mother who doesn't understand other people don't want to hear her crying child.

  • This Dawkins bloke seems like a fairly bright guy. I predict that he has a bright future ahead of him.

  • @comingatchu your kidding right?

  • @spockck

    You're correct. I'm kidding.

  • This is the only video I have seen where Dawkins smiles.

  • @willybozas Says the one who believes in magic talking snakes, Thats why you probably live in a run down trailer park and this man is considered one of the brightest minds, Please stfu and gtfo.

  • Dont you think Dawkins emphasizes too much on luck when it can mostly be explained away by the anthropic principle ?

  • How lucky, were the kids then! Being taught by Richard Dawkins himself.... Privileged few!!

  • Jesus is the only way to God. You have been told!

  • @lharmon4 - What if I don't want to go? What if there isn't even any God at all?

  • guau they have toooooo many tools, in the present day only need a notebook and a big screem.

  • Wow that's some ghetto tech lol

  • its the rainforest cafe of lecture halls

  • 52:02 the retard who sat down

  • I was just going to skim this video and see what it was about. Ended up watching the whole thing, and plan on watching the rest of the series. Amazing stuff. Liked and Sub'd.

  • he didnt have to bring religion into this

  • @brucelee7150 I'm glad he did, what he said was very true.

  • @brucelee7150 Religion does not have to exist in the first place.

  • What a bosss

  • 1:19 "Here it is that we are born, bread and lived...aeeeeerghww"

  • bullshit

  • I bet some parents of the kids in this room complained.

  • i completely understand this lecture and am hoping to watch the lecture this year but the scientist is clearly trying to inspire young people to get into science; and yes,hes talking sense and this is very interesting but it seems that sometimes i feel like falling asleep; now dont get me wrong,he is speaking great truth but (after watching the WHOLE lecture) i think he should have made it so that the audience didnt look so bored while he repeats the same points over and over :L

  • that baby is now about 20 years old yeh? I'm 20. thats kinda cool

  • this needs to be put on netflix

  • I watched the entire lecture and the baby didn't annoy me in any way! My point STOP BITCHING about NOTHING

  • this is a brilliant lecture. he covers so much ground!

  • Wonderful! I hope all these lucky kids grew up understanding that all religions are nothing buy myths invented by ignorant humans who barely made it out of their caves. Richard Dawkins - you are a treasure.

  • @thewhiteSRR WHY ? .. WHO?

  • I think he was bluffing about reading the cuneiform.

  • Why is everyone going on about the little baby ? Its not really effecting the lecture, and it should be OBVIOUS to everybody the baby is in the lecture room for a purpose. After Dawkins gives the baby back to its mother, they both leave. Oh,and Dawkins never fails to deliver..a great lecture.

  • @brindow1 Yes it really is affecting the lecture. It should be OBVIOUS to you this is not the place for a baby. Dawkins uses the baby for about a minute then hands it back. What's the point when he could have just as easily shown a picture of a baby.

  • @cupomash2 Hey look,I would have preferred it without a real baby..I simply meant that after just a short while the baby was taken away so there wouldn't be any further interruptions. They say not to work on tv with children or animals[and especially babies !] .. but some STILL DO. This lecture was 20 yrs ago and it may be that Dawkins thought he could make his point BETTER with a a real baby. I'm not aware he's used a baby in his lectures at any other time - are you?

  • @brindow1 I don't think he has ever used a baby in any other of his lectures. The rule is never work with animals or kids on T.V then why not abide by this rule. The result is a whining baby for part of the lecture and the payoff is - he gets to hold it for less than a minute! We all know what a baby looks like. It's like Dawkins telling us he came by car to the lecture and then proceeds in bringing a car into the studio to show us what a car looks like where by a simple picture would suffice.

  • Dawkins should have broken the awkward silence inspired by that bleating baby by telling a dead baby joke.

  • HE LOOKS SO YOUNG!!!!

  • I love Dawkins

  • what a shmexy young dawkins!

  • OMFG... richard looks so young ...

  • @880330145789 is this an old vid? Hedoes look very young.

  • @880330145789 I cant believe he is already more then 70years old! He look like max for 50 years... :-O ...but its good and better for him and his image:)

  • wow look how old those computers are. and that wasnt even that long ago... pretty cool.

  • I must have been as old as that baby when this lecture took place.

And I would have loved to be there. ^^

  • at 52:37 i swear i almost started clapping i was so into it LOL

  • Could all of you off-topic morons keep quiet and stay out. I'm not here to read all your stupid yapping about god and christianity. To try and silence science and progress is true evil and it will condemned you to eternal darkness since it's modern science and not god putting a rooftop over your head and giving you antibiotics to fight off infections.

  • If someone explained gravity and you ignored their theory (explanation) of gravity, it wouldn't change anything would it?

To say that we do not stick to the earth, means we should all be floating.

  • God could've easily killed him with that cannon ball! But I guess science won...

  • the baby that got held by Richard Dawkins is so so so so SO lucky.

  • such a imbecile child .. LISTEN u idiot

  • Sorry a bit off topic here but can someone please enlighten me on why the fuck a woman would bring a screaming baby to a lecture and more importantly why was she allowed entry.

  • @gbCerberus37 Humble apologies to all women and babies.

  • @cupomash2 The baby was a prop for his lecture at 17:45ish. Did you actually watch that far into it?

  • @cupomash2 At least she was a useful prop. :p

  • @kawaiikuku I know Dawkins used the baby as a prop for about two minutes but he could have just showed us a pic instead of putting up with a whining baby.

  • @cupomash2 It looked like she was breast feeding that....thing

  • @cupomash2 In her defense, it is a lecture for children. Perhaps she had other children there with her.

  • @stingernick I have no problem with a lecture for children per se, if it includes children of a age where by they don't need their mothers attention, but the baby was a distraction to others.

  • @cupomash2 Lol I asked the same thing but then it turns out Dawkins used the baby to make a point. So Dawkins wanted the baby to be there.

  • @saumyab44 Yes he did use the baby as part of the lecture for about a minute, but he could have just as easily showed us a picture of a baby minus the whining through the lecture.

  • @cupomash2 Because she wants to "indoctrinate" her child the right way?

  • @iz2sicc A pic would have sufficed.

  • @cupomash2 Because having a baby doesn't come at the cost of your right to attend a lecture. Perhaps it could have been mic'd better though.

  • @hopkinsju I never suggested that having a baby should forfeit your right to attend a lecture. But by the same token it shouldn't forfeit everybody else's right to listen quietly as to what is being lectured.

  • @cupomash2 I'm fairly certain that the baby was intended to be a part of the lecture as you'll see at 18:00.

  • @cupomash2 Did you not watch the entire lecture? I gather you didn't (and neither did a great number of other commenters, judging from numerous similar comments). The baby, Hannah, was part of the presentation!

  • @Jimmysam22 Yes I did watch the entire lecture or at least tried to over the whining baby noises. As I said Dawkins could have a used a picture of a baby for his analysis after all he only held the baby for a few seconds then handed it back. As for Hannah she should have be left in what we call a creche.

  • @cupomash2 If you watch the complete lecture, you find that the baby was a part of the lecture.

  • @thefuckingxister And if you had read the comments before replying you would see I have already addressed this topic.

  • @cupomash2

If you'd watched the entire video you would have gotten the answer to that.

  • @cupomash2 cuz she wants to learn. And people understand and is tolerant.

  • @HajtomY I'm not against anyone learning. People are tolerant because they don't want to create a fuss, but I bet if you asked them truthfully they would rather the baby wasn't there.

  • @cupomash2 She was a part of the lecture.

  • @TheIncognitusMe I know it's terrible.

  • @cupomash2 Some British are too polite to express their objection.

  • @cupomash2 If you would watch the fucking video long enough to see where this becomes relevant you would not have to ask. And that goes to all of the fucking assholes that gave you a thumbs up. It is a MAJOR POINT of this video. Watch and learn. Excuse me, you must be one of those that must have INSTANT gratification so you can get back to more important shit like texting, facebooking & twittering your life instead of living it.

  • @NickInDetroit Half your comment is purely based on conjecture. You make wild accusations about me needing instant gratification and yet you don't know me. You don't explain the point your trying to defend.Your offended by the thumbs up I have received - maybe it's more like your jealous or perhaps another single parent bleating on about how great your kid is. And stop capitalizing words it makes you look like a spoilt brat So if you don't have a relevant point to make shut the fuck up numb nuts.

  • @cupomash2 17:41 What is the use of a baby?

  • @TweekDash Yes exactly was is the use.

  • @TweekDash I dont want to hear a screaming baby before going to sleep.

  • @cupomash2 Because it was part of the lecture. Go to about 17:30

  • @rundeer Wish she and the baby waited outside until it was time to bring the baby on stage.

  • @cupomash2

I guess its a part of the lecture . if you watch to the end you will see he will hold the baby and explain some things

  • @cupomash2 For illustration. Watch the video please

  • @MrHelviti I have watched the video and it makes no sense to have a whining baby there.

  • @cupomash2 She's part of the lecture... If you watch the entire thing, you will see why...

  • @MurderMan11 Yes she is. Yes I did. And no I don't.

  • pcgamer010 - what century have you've been spawned in? Girls and no potential??? How archaic thinking, I bet Hanna will object, too...if we have the pleasure to learn what she's doing now, 20 years since these Xmas lectures. I hope this lecture series has impressed her deeply.

  • I don't think the theory that primates ate the dino eggs sounds right. I mean, it wasn't only the egg layers that died off, it was the large sea living creatures as well.

I think it was a combination of the meteorite hitting and causing a tremendous change in the earth's atmosphere, which affected the equilibrium so the dinosaurs not only dealt with temperature changes but an increase in parasites etc. which affected food sources and it ALL contributed to the extinction-so it's was a combo.

  • it is amazing that twit mother managed to distract this lecture so many years since. And did she even hear a word spoken? I probably would have enjoyed listening to it - why did she not take a seat in the rear?

  • You Internet athiests never disappoint in being a joke. Dawkins is talking about embracing the life you have and understand how lucky you are and you decide to waste your time nitpicking over an innocuous baby. Get over yourself.

  • @thejobloshow "Internet athiests"

    There's a new term I've come across.

  • @thejobloshow "You Internet athiests never disappoint in being a joke. Awesome stereotypical response, bro.

  • @TheCornyPotato Yeah, because Internet Athiests rarely paint all Christians with the same brush. Give me a break.

  • @thejobloshow Come on, man. Use your common sense. No matter what the reason might be for you to state "You Internet athiests never disappoint in being a joke", it's not enough to say it's because Atheists say the same for Christians. You can't expect that to be a logical reason for people to take that specific statement seriously. The same goes for any stereotype. The remainder of your initial response is valid, however.

  • I'm watching this in Middlesbrough, when he said you'd have to walk to Middlesbrough to get to the time period of the amphibian it made me giggle. :)

  • Women, I have the utmost respect for anyone who births and raises a baby. However babies are not appropriate for certain situations, such as important one-time events which are not improved by the addition of your crotch-spawn shrieking their heads off. If you can't bear to part with your child for such events then the proper thing is to simply not attend. To willfully bring the child is equivalent to performing the disruption yourself, and makes you a massive cunt. That is all.

  • @Phage0070 I believe the "baby event" was staged.

  • @Phage0070 Nice, now i dont need to comment!

  • Wow, that baby looks delicious! :P

  • Note to self, avoid been eating to increase probability of joining the elite. ha but seriously this video is fantastic, Richard has pointed out some great wonders of evolution in this video. Fantastic work as usual.

  • So to say that the earth is only 6000 or so years old is like saying that walking from there to moscow... is either only 4 steps ... or that only 4 steps mattered. Good lecture.

  • for god's sake, why there is a babey, is it going to understand what he is saying ?

  • @ramiBudemaris um..I believe much like the movement of his other props, that was pre-arranged.

  • As soon as I have kids, I'll expose them to this wonderful lecture.

  • Emma Watson is really smart!

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus There are not hating there are simply not believe him has a concept of truth. How do you not know your good isn't the real evil and evil isn't the real good. You don't and will ignore what I just said in a blind ignorance.

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus thats me! im a god hating demon! and i sure do love evil!! and that fornication is just great! im off to the shops to buy some pringles and fornicate a bit..................

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus I'm an atheist. I've been a vegetarian for 30 yrs. I was secretary of the Anti Apartheid Society at Uni, active member of Third World First, Amnesty International and a great many conservation organizations. Most of the other people I met in these organizations were also atheists. Is practical hands-on campaigning/marching/fund raising/letter writting evil if performed by atheists. Should we have spent our time on our knees instead and left the real work to others?

  • @darrylsweetland According to Billy Ray Cyrus, it's pretty scary when atheists do things that are good for the earth, for animals, or for mankind in general. I mean, he was terrified when he saw a sign about atheists cleaning up a highway as he drove by. So, it wouldn't surprise me if others felt just as frightened at atheists doing good works. ;)

  • @believeandtrustJesus Well done for attacking gays. I'm bi, and I think you're doing us atheists a great service. Keep being a bigoted fool, we'll get thousands of de-converts from Christianity that way.

  • @micmac274 Your Bi????? oh my god......do you realise you are responsible for jupiter heating up? pmsl

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus go to TVtropes, go to the Richard Dawkins page. Look at the second quote. That is the God you worship.

  • I can't believe how STUPID Christians are-and I WAS a Christian- but then an amazing thing happened to me... I grew up.

To put all your faith in a book written BY MEN because you're afraid your "loving God" will send you to hell for not loving him back (?) is so very sad. What a waste of your brains.

If God knows everything- why do you pray? Doesn't he already know your heart's desires?

Then you insult a learned man of science which is governed by truth- ACTUAL truth. You ARE the missing link!

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus Over a period of 10 years, those executed in Sing-Sing Prison for murder were 65% Catholics, 26% Protestants, 6% Hebrew, 2% Pagan, and less than 1/3 of 1% non-religious.

  • i wish he was the man... he is not. quantum physics. he wonders this.

  • When he held the baby I thought he was going to eat it. Phew!

  • @BelieveandtrustJesus I hope you'll agree with me that in many people's eyes, Hitler was one of if not the most "evil" person in history, he was a catholic, and i guess evidence would be him creating Christian Rehabilitation camps; his repeated use of at least the term "the Creator" in his speeches and in his book and the fact he never renounced his faith after being baptised. Just putting it out there. Also Crusades, a horrible event caused by belief in God.

  • @jutheto Not only was Catholosicm responsible for helping Hitler to convince that the Jews had something wrong with them, but at the same time this was going on the Sino-Japanese war had been raging on for years. The Japanese were even worse then the Nazis, by FAR! They did not cause the death toll that the Nazi's were responsible for, but their war time atrocities are the most despicable in the history of the Human race - and all of it was as a result of religion.

  • HOLY SHIT! Richard Dawkins was 50 years old when he gave this speech - yet (to me at least) he looks round about 30.

  • Brainwashing children with the dumbest theory mankind has ever faced.

  • @1983xita i know right? religion is so stupid! hehe

  • I feel this man is a truly modern mind after reading much from him and researching what he has put forward. Not until I started to watch many videos containing him did I realize what an odd individual this man is. His mind is brilliant though.

  • Dawkins is a fabulous educator.

  • he's a strange man, before lecturing love to drink broth, but he dig also parsley and chugs!

  • why bring a baby to a LECTURE. HOLY FUCK!

  • @cptmuska You obviously didn't watch the lecture... fucking idiot.

  • @surtur55 there are children there to learn, adults there to learn as well. but a baby has No place in a lecture of any sort unless it is being used as a demonstration. if you don't think it is distracting and or irritating. you re lying to you re self.

  • @cptmuska HE USED THE BABY IN THE LECTURE. HERP DERP.

  • Richard Dawkins should be forced to have more babies or he should be cloned.

  • That big ruler looks very pythonesque...

  • In my entire school years, i heard about universe for 2mins only, that makes me angry

  • 94 people didn't evolve I see...

  • Where is he getting all these props? Where did that giant ruler come from?

  • I can't believe he was 50, he looks so much younger

  • When I saw the first guy who walked up, I was thinking, "That's Richard Dawkins? WTF"?!

And then I saw "Peter Day".

  • He looks so good for 50 O_o

  • Watching this I was struck by a parallel with a church - the feeling of community and of a continuous institution, readings and speakers. Imagine if every week around the world, for just an hour or two the minds of entire communities were being so enriched instead of filled with violence and stone age nonesense, yet were also afforded the 'warm glow' of community engagement that religious gatherings give.

  • DAT HAIR!

  • I was going to say "who brought the fucking baby?!" but I see you've all got that covered!

    Seriously though ...

  • i can't help it the audience are sad thy missed Christmas too listen to science

    XD poor kids

  • @lucky5lolo I would have loved to miss Christmas for something like this when I was young.

  • @ciaracustard

lololollolo me too i will miss Eid for this ;)

but those kids don't seem very happy about it :p

  • I like to pretend the baby's one of the dinosaurs in the background :D

  • Stupid Darwinists....you poor, poor souls. :(
