I wish everyone would start writing comments of protest to YT for their insistence upon scrambling up the comments so that there is no coherence between them. What is the point of having 'replies' if some drunken Neanderthal with his furry little hand on the lever of POWER (!! "ha ha, my power, all mine, ha ha... ) is sitting there dedicated to frustrating all attempts to converse? If you don't want exchanges of comments, don't offer the damn things in the first place!! Zheesh!
[Listen to a schmuck like me defending one of the greatest conductors in history!] I took the time find Karajan's performance of this piece, and I must say, I positively LOVED IT! And judging by the comments, I doubt you'll find much dissent in your favor. The reason you have had to look so long to find this fairly anomalous reading of the music, is that others have tended to follow the composer's directives in the score. I'm not in any way devaluing LS's version. I very much like it also!
@debbymoge I realize that we don't all think or feel alike about many things, especially things that are of importance to us personally. But I don't think you will find that the general consensus on Mr von Karajan is so dismissive, or condescending. I assume that you assumed that the point was self-evident. Not for me. I think, for example, that his conducting of the 9 Beethoven symphonies (1963) are considered by many knowledgable music-lovers to be definitive.
The tempo was decided by the fact that this recording, made in 1949, had to be fitted onto one side of the old 78rpm disc, and those lasted just under 5 minutes.
Unbelievable performance. Intense. No words to express my appreciation. If you now listen to the Karajan's performance of this Valse you will vomit.

@gregormann7 So happy I was able to be instrumental in your getting to hear again a version you so enjoyed!

@debbymoge You were, and I thank you. Isn't YT conversation wonderful?
gregormann7 1 year ago
@gregormann7 Yes. Seems to be about the only civil place on the web.
Oh, one other exception, a web site to discuss words and grammar.
Can't think of the name of it. Short term memory disorder loves this time of day.

bad dinamic, not a nice direction, there isn't any kind of Passion,it's only a sort of experiment

Stokowski always stressed the need for imagination and flexability in his players. In concert he never conducted a phrase twice the same way.

have been searching for years for a version like this that plays as a waltz instead of a dirge, or worse, a saccharine schmaltz (ala von karajan)

Stokowski tended to make things a hair too fast.

intriguing agogic interpretation, remarkable

@BoredxByron Thanks for a new term: agogic. Hadn't heard that one before. Having looked it up, it fits well here.

This is the most unusual interpretation that I have heard thus far. But, it is refreshing to hear. Bravo!
