  • i didnt notice the nail till you said something about it, not really that bad. good video though very helpful

  • @jesse37100 you wouldnt believe how many people do.im baffled at the amount of people that feel the need to say something about it. most are extremely unkind and downright mean when they do.

  • @bctruck well you know how people are.. just wanna make other people feel bad to make them feel a little better about themselves, im only 16 but i see that things have changed people are butt-holes about everything and to tell you the truth i hate my generation filled with materialistic people who dont know how to do anything for themselves

  • Beautiful restore of an old axe head. It pisses me off as well when people allow such high quality tools to degrade by neglect. Just a small coat of oil or paint would have done wonders for it if they didn't want to repair it to an immediate usable state.

  • Wow I will try this! When you make the edge, do you go just by feel? I find it hard to make a nice edge! I would love a video on just that!

  • @PojkenMedKepsen on this type of axe,you dont want a super fine edge because it will bend over when the axe is swung into a log. i guess a better description would be to say ,sharpen it to a point, not a fine edge. making an edge on a knife or axe gets easier the more you do it.

  • @bctruck OK! I will go to a couple of flee markets this weekend and try to find an axe like yours in the video! :) You really inspired me! My dad is a carpenter and hes got pretty sharp tools so I'll let him show me the sharpining! Thank's again for the vid!

  • @PojkenMedKepsen thanks for watching! i love flea markets.wish i was going!

  • @PojkenMedKepsen

I know they call it something different in other countries but if you have a website like craigslist check their tools for sale section and you may be able to find an used axe cheap since a lot of people ditch their tools on it.

  • Beautiful.

  • 18 Years Old and I have learned a bit Thank you

  • Your a man's man. Nice axe sir!

  • That's a real man right there. Damn good video. Should be required viewing for all teen men.

  • i dare to make that coment because were am caming from we ain't got a lot of hardware store around...and well any one learn that necesity is the mother of all inventions ???

  • great video chief...wonderful talent..i'll love to suggest only two thing 1st...after done sharpening a bit of grease along the edge would keep it from rust...2nd..i see you take pride in your tools so i would recomend you when using your nice file..just lift it up going backwards...you know ?file forward making contact but away when going backward,by doing so it will last longer...just saying broh...hope don't get mad by my humble coment...

  • When stuff is marked Made In Germany in English, it usually means it was made between 1945 and 1949 when German industry was bombed to hell and highly restricted. It's not necessarily their best stuff, although a blacksmith might have had access to decent mangled steel. Conversely, I wouldn't underrate Chinese steel. All the steel in England is being stripped and shipped there at the moment.

  • Good video, learned a lot. Thanks.

  • @JuanMoreGame ive built several rocket stoves and have the videos on my channel. i noticed on your channel that you just watched a rocket stove video.thats why i mention it.

  • Sir, you are probably one of the manliest men ever. Kudos.

  • @kazetehskylord i feel manly,,,oh so manly,,,,i feel manly and happy and,,,,,, oh never mind.

  • @bctruck Musicals are manly as fuck (Y)

  • @kazetehskylord i cant tell you how many times ive watched a musical, then been involved in a brawl after a heated discussion about the musical. since you caught my inferance to the musical, its obvious you are a manly man also. perhaps we should get together one day and bomb a small country? hehehehe!!!lolol

  • @bctruck This sounds relevant to my interests.

  • Take care of your damn tools and quit pissing this guy off!

  • good stuff

  • Great job on the axe .

  • yeah, german quality stuff ;)

it's more expencive, but it's great quality ;)

  • Nice work sir, I don't know about you but nothing makes my day like bringing something back from the dead and getting it useful again.

  • A file only works one way

  • @MrDarkTides uh uh,does not,naner naner naner!

  • @bctruck Don't get me wrong this is a good tutorial but i was always led to believe this when using a file.

  • @MrDarkTides this is not a file use tutorial. im showing how to save and put an edge on a nice old axe head. how about using your time more efficiently than worrying about how i use my file. how about using a file anyway you like and i will to? how about doing a little research into this great file conspiracy in which youve "been led to believe" you need to use your file one way or another. good god man! get a life!

  • Nice tool work. Enjoyed this video!

  • hahaha, a edge where you can shave of haha clever...

  • great video, finished beauty =)

  • "everynow and then I grind it down with my dremle"

  • i wanted to see you put the metal wedges in, that was most important to me, don't worry about your fingers, it means you're a hard working man to me. I cry like a baby for just a paper cut.

  • i love it,im rebuilding an axe right now, im only 13 so its proving to be quite a problum!

  • Why did you chose a straight handle instead of a curved one?

  • @SteveB357 there is a flea market here that sells these culls for a couple bucks each. i just bought whatever he had to fit the axe head.

  • You sound like you're about my age. Your sentiment about getting angry at folks who don't take proper care of tools really rings true for me. One thing I particularly liked is that you're the only person I've seen who talks about caring for axes, who uses the right tool to do it: a mill file. I don't know why people have forgotten about files for this job. So it goes.

  • BC... I liked your video, and I think it is funny... all this chatter about your fingers and such. I watched this because I have a few old axe heads around that I need to clean up. You sound like a good guy, so keep up the good work! We are new to this videography but are having fun. Go to youTube and check us out at Got Blood Outdoors. Thanks for the info, Jeff Webb (Host) We hve educational outdoor videos, some are funny to, I guess.

  • even my wedges have edges

  • Neuro surgery is to do with the brain not fingers. Lol

  • @Codenamebravo no.you are quite wrong. you have google right at your fingertips but left a silly comment anyway.neurosurgery is a branch of medicine that deals with surgical treatment of problems affecting, brain, spine, peripheral neverves (like those in my fingers) and arteries of the neck. peripheral nervers bring information from the eyes ears face arms legs and ahands,to the brain. please spend more time learning and less time correcting other people. you look silly being wrong.

  • Yeah German steel is good stuff but chinese iphones have essentially ruled the world. So shut the hell up before saying shit.

  • @TheCertifiedAsian im not sharpening a chinese iphone. what does one have to do with the other? your funny.i actually recorded this with a chinese iphone. so shut the hell up,before saying shit.

  • @TheCertifiedAsian What the fuck is your problem? people are losing touch with american heritage, the axe being americana like it is, i see no problem with this video. and where in the HELL did the iphones come up? oh wait, your just proud of china for it, certifiedasian.

  • @TheCertifiedAsian We sell you the machines to build all those iphones! ;D

  • Was it suprise that axe is not from China ? ;-)

  • Nice video.. reminds me I have to sharpen my new ax before going camping.

  • great vid shows you how exp and a lil bit of money can make a great tool.

  • @frankthetank112244 yeah,im not sure what the value of this axe head really was,but im certain it was worth the effort to save it and make it useful again. thanks for watching.

  • I like to collect axes and hatchets and fix them up also and enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing! Nothing like finding a good deal like that at a yard sale. AWESOME!

  • Good reminder to everyone who works around sharp tooled and heavy machinery. At the end of they day you should leave your shop with all 10. Also look at the cost of what your doing compared to the cost of f

  • Nice job on the axe but don't ask to borrow one of my files.

  • @lmorrison17 well thank you for the compliment and the vieled insult. since we both know the likelyhood of me borrowing a file from you is zero, its obvious you wanted to leave an insulting comment but didnt have the nerve to appear as a total jerk.i believe the experts would call this method of insulting someone "passive aggresive". nicely done!

  • @bctruck Best Comeback, and so true...

  • Well looking at all those tools, it's never a dull moment with you!

  • @BarneySaysHi ohhhhhh,,,,goddddd. your humor is as "sharp" as a tack. )))))

  • @bctruck Sorry man, I just couldn't resist :). I could have said you're living on the edge as well.

  • Do they call you axe man by any chance?

  • @jakebullet64 ive been called lots of things but so far no ones called me axe man. it kinda has a nice ring to it though.

  • very cool

  • You are very talented, sir! That axe finished up beautifully, thank you for sharing!

  • @Lightscribe721 thanks for watching!

  • chuck norris cuts hair with that axe

  • @crazeguy26 chuck norris would have stared at the axe and all the rust would have ran away scared.

  • Nicely done, Sir! Thank you.

  • @HanaleiSurfrider1 thanks! hope you found it helpful.

  • Very nice work

  • Great vid.......I love axes and own quite a few myself. You have a real nice find there. Great Resto, now just be safe using it. Well done !!

  • I think I'm confused by your filing technique: is that a special two-way file? In metal shop back in the 70's, I was taught to file on the forward stroke only, and lift off on the back stroke, to avoid bending the ridges down. Maybe files have advanced since then.

  • @bruceumba im so sorry your confused bruce. how bout you just file the way that works best for you. im not trying to change the world with my vids, just showing a neat old axe that i fixed up. do what you wish, and i will to. have a nice day.

  • awesome job! when i first saw the blade i thought tht it was going to look rusty and bad but you turned it into a piece of art, you did a wonderful job

  • @turkeyshooter2011 thank you so much! what a nice comment.

  • I thought you were going to put the wedges in turned 90degs the other way

  • My favourite part of this page is the comment to MrGlassman. No swearing, no offensive remark, no back-biting. This man has real class.

  • I found a old school one in Australia at a dump what did you use to get it cleaned up? Machine or all by hand?

  • @123codfan i tried a few differant things but the thing that worked best was naturally the last thing i tried ,and that was a flapped sanding disc that fit the arbor of my angle grinder.it made it look brand new but i had to cover it with paint or in this huuuuuuumid louisiana climate it would rusted back up overnight!LOL!

  • Beautiful Axe and great video I learned what I needed to fix up one of my own.

  • Great work! Great axe! Well woth the time!

  • @jimmyggh1 thanks so much. i enjoy saving tools that are worthy of the time and effort.

  • Tht was beautiful

  • @GOONZOOF glad you liked it! thanks!

  • Thanks for the good video. It inspired me to go out an get a new file and put a nice edge on my old hatchet. I like your philosophy about taking care of old tools.

  • I just grid mine on the road while driving

  • A 4" grinder with an 80 grit sanding disk on it works really well for pitted up axe heads, switch to finer grits for profiling the edge blah blah blah :)

  • Lol We have some really cool old hardware stores around here too :) great places to spend hours just browsing at history...

  • nice man

  • Aren't the doctors supposed to remove the surgical wire once everything heals up?

  • tools won't rust if you use them.

  • @alpovee same way the body wont rust on a car if you drive it then huh?

  • Nice work. I love seeing old tools getting a second chance!

  • Great video.. Very well done. Keep those fingers safe. Maybe those tools are too sharp ?

  • that's one sexy axe

  • Very nice work!

  • good video

  • Excellent. Does my heart good to see a man who cares about his tools. Well done, sir!

That axe will outlast us all if it's cared for like that.

  • My dad brought home an old double headed axe from work years ago. It languished in our tool shed for years, but just this summer we finally got a handle for it. It really did a number on an old bradford pear stump in our back yard. Not sure where it was made, there are no markings on the blade.

  • Invest in a Tormek.

  • I love seeing desolate things like this axe head getting pretty, shiny and useful.

  • @99pppo there are not many axes that would be worth the time and effort it took to reclaim this one,but german steel is worth saving. its a buy it once and keep it for life kind of axe.

  • hey buddy - sorry about the other other day. you really did a beautiful job on that!

  • Great video and a great work on this axe head. And a German quality, hand forged axe head for 2$ is quite a bargain.

  • i hate it when my tools loose their temper. youve never heard a scream fest till one if your tools looses thier temper. LOL jk. couldnt resist mate :P

  • @crimsonshadows1 yep.some tools are just TEMPERmental divas! LOLOL!!

  • Welcome to the buggered left hand club.

I chopped thru 3 tendons on mine, healed up pretty good though.

I'm the same way with tools.

Everything I have is either sharp or nicely dressed if it's a hammer punch wedge etc and I soak the handles in oil for weeks as well.

  • 'even my wedges have edges'

you sir have gained a subscrider =)

  • I love restoring old tools, its my way of honouring the crafters of old. Taking care of tools is just as important as using them. The time you take in caring for them, gets you into the proper frame of mind to use and respect them.

  • I tell you what, take that thumb, and shove it in their eye! Good job taking an old tool and giving it new life.

  • hi im from station 33 vol fire department, we have a rusty old axe we found up stairs. it took me about 3 hours but i got the pits, and the rust out. what paint do i sue to cover it, and what stone do i use to sharpen it?

  • I enjoy seeing people recycle tools. My fellow americans need to take note, we need to be more self reliant and stop throwing away everything. If you are throwing it away, please try to have it recycled.

  • The damage and scars we acquire on our hands through a life of honest work are not to be dismissed lightly. They tell of being willing to work; of providing for our families and of the will to continue through adversity. Despite the hard times your hands have endured, they demonstrate a lot of care and skills which you can, and do, pass on to others through videos like this one. Thanks.

  • @s10m0t10n what a very nice comment! thanks!

  • @s10m0t10n My Grandparents always called them the Family Jewels(before the perversion now a days) to an honest living. There is nothing wrong with honest work, and sweat on the brow just as the Bible teaches us. Thanks for the helpful video as well bctruck.

  • Would have liked to see it used to see the sharpness-other than that good vid

  • Is a file really required to sharpen an axe?

  • Ive just dug through my grandpa's old working/ tool chest and found and axe head pretty much the same as this, but i only have a block of oil stone which is two sided, please help me with tips or anything???

  • wow, you did a great job. I hope I can do that too..

  • Good work! I'm impressed! And don't worry about the comments on your thumb (not that you are worrying). I severed the tendon in my left thumb about 5 years ago and it's still a bit gimpy.

  • @MrGlassman18352 thanks! i enjoyed saving an axe worth the time and effort.as far as the comments about my fingers and thumb being ugly,or distracting as one person put it.ive realized that the social parameters we observe when interacting face to face, are not enforcable on the anonymous and faceless internet. some folks of weak character tend to take advantage of that. i liken them to the same type that park in handicap spaces when they are not handicapped.thanks for commenting!

  • Those are a working man's hands.

  • My father gave me a bush axe that was his father's. I would like to sharpen it for him. Could you give me some tips? Or possible put a video up on how to properly sharpen a bush axe....thank you!

  • @DerrickHair I dont have a bush axe to do a video with but you could start with a 10or 12 inch mill file then finish with a sharpening ston. If the edge is really beat up you might have to use a grinder in it. You want to avoid that though if there us any way you could work out the nicks and dings with the file. That is the best method. Good luck

  • @bctruck Thanks, Ill hit the home depot today an pick up the tools I need, thanks for the advice....your video gives me a lot of great ideas! Keep the great video's coming!

  • @DerrickHair one more thing, it makes the job much easier if youhave a visde you can use. please be careful when using the file because you can get a little comfortable when you get in the groove and you tend to not pay enough attention and bang, you slam your fingers into the edge your filing.........ask me how i know!!!!! ouch

  • @bctruck

Very educational video. Thanx a lot. :) I'm still new at this so I have a few questions.

Do you use oil or something to prevent cutting blade from rusting? If so, what kind of oil?

    And what is visde?

    Thank you in advance.

  • @88Protoss i always keep a coat of motor oil on the cutting edge of the blade. i think i meant to spell,VISE. not visde. sorry ,fat fingers.

  • awsome work and a great find as far as the messed up hands thing gose my father worked in a mouling shop and i have seen the aftermath of ppls hand thats been cought in 2 ton and up presses and other machinery and its no joking matter ppl if ppl had an idea of how serious it is they might understand

  • @bigjohn20081983 I'm actually just happy to have all my fingers. My index finger is the one that got cut comPletely off and I was lucky to find it. It was still in the glove I was wearing. The gloves are the reason my hand got pulled in to the machine in the first place but they made us wear them because OSHA had wrote the machine shop up for it's bad safety practices. (it was my dad shop) I was 16 when it happened.

  • @bctruck that sucks osha make them wear them aswell those and kelvar sleves to prevent them from getting cut while handling bare metal w/ rough edges i seen one guy loose a finger one day when i was there because he didnt remove his ring "b4 the gloves where madatory" and it got cought in gears and cut the finger off more cruhed than cut

  • @CPTutorialUniverse vas machs du hier?. wilst du spreche english bitte?mien deutche ist nicht zaire gute yetz.

  • Messed up hands are a part of being someone that makes things, If I had a dollar for every time I've damaged my hands I could retire. Well, maybe a silver dollar...

  • @jwwm2 i only mentioned it because on the only other video where you could see my hands,i had a bunch of people get wierd about my screwed up thumb nail. they said it was very distracting. im thinking, i hope they dont drive if they are that easily distracted.

  • you do beautiful work! makes me want to go out and clean up all my old tools...

  • @hunt1803 my wife says i have OCD where it concerns my tools. ive been accused of having doileys to set my tools on ,which is rediculous. everyone knows they are kept in tool cozies. be right back, i have to go out to my shop and check my tools for dust and fingerprint smudges.

  • You are artist! Did I mention that before? :)

  • @tgtbtri Thanks tomislav! I just finished my last cup and now it's time to get a little work done around here. Hope things are going well on your side of the world.

  • @bctruck On my side of the world the weather is finally turned from rainy to sunny :) tomorrow I'll go to the "Galeb" to take some pictures for you :)

Have a good job around the house ;)

  • @tgtbtri i cant wait to see the pics of the inside. have a fun day roaming the ship and dont bring any ghosts home with you!!!! ;)

  • @bctruck One sailing ghost more-less... I have plenty of'em LOL!
