That was an excellent review. It showed all of the features that I was curious about - especially video and pictures in the dark. I thought the macro video at the end was better quality than the videos at more realistic zoom levels, but maybe that's just because we don't expect to be able to see small things that clearly.
possible a stupid question but i just want to make sure before i go and break my camera...but is this camera salt waterproof or just plain tap waterproof?
@Sonlider you will hear clicking when zooming if audio is on...it sucks. my W30 is same way...they all are (optios) zoom in before recording, or zoom up to digital zoom range, then use that.
Great review! I already ordered the W80 for an upcoming snowboarding trip. Looks like I made a good decision for a great all-around all-terrain camera. Thanks.
How did you get the HD video to record so smoothly. I have the same camera and when I shoot video I get a lot of grain and pixels. What were your settings for video. What type of mem card did you use?
When you record movie, do you have problem with autofocus? i saw somewhere that if it is turn ON-you get blurry video. If it is turned OFF-you get clicking noise.
i have this old pentax optio m40 and i have this question about the new ones - when started recording a video and you have focused something that's close (not macro) and the object starts to go far from the camera (for example a dog, car ) and it loses the focus because the focus distance stays constant as when you started to record the video. so is it the same with the new models of pentax ? and is the qualiti of the video getting much worse when using digi zoom in hd?
the video quality isn't as good as expected, but the picture is still crisp and vibrant when motionless. The sun areas don't look to great, but alot of cameras don't do too much better for under $500. I'm still stoked to get it when I can afford one, I bet if you go out at the right times the colors would be awesome, and the closeups look REALLY nice
1) can you tell me if there is a way to turn on the HD video recording and let it keep running and have the lcd go off to save batteries while recording? I want to hook it to a bike and don't need the lcd to be on and want to save batteries.
2) Also can you tell me how many GB it is to record an hour of HD on it?
3) Have you tried running a battery from full to empty while recording continuous HD video? How long did it last?
Crazy question maybe, but does anybody know what the bird/buglike sound in the background is. I heard it in the Manga movie "The Girl who lept through time" and wondered what it was, i saw it in the original japanese version.
I just got mine and the optical zoom seems to only work for pictures and it's digital zoom in movie mode which is a deal killer for me. I have the w30 and the w20 and I always thought the zoom was optical. I'm either mistaken or pentax changed it in this camera. I'm really disappointed because I love the interval shooting and voice recorder on these optios. It seems like I will have to settle for the optical zoom on the panasonic.
awesome review thanks!

Very professional testing here, good job.
Just bought an older Pentax Optio SV, can't find any info on it, but expecting it to be decent.

While in video mode, did you turn off the AF?
In w60 it makes this stupid sound in the microphone..., also while zooming. Anyway in video is there any Optical zoom?
sapoddr 2 years ago
No, it was in AF.
You cannot use optical zoom while recording videos, but you can do it before. Digital zoom works tho
torskilDotCom 2 years ago
Beautiful shot at 5:25.
Would you mind doing a short demo using the digital zoom in a video?
msxghost 2 years ago
so in my vid thats actually the digital zoom? I thought it was optical :(

I wish the manufacturers would make feature presentations like this. This has pretty much sold me on the W80.
