Chinese spears always has a red tassel attached to it. It has dual purpose. The brightness helped to blurred the vision of the opponent and also to soak up blood to prevent the weapon to become slippery.
@Plato86 Japan won against China largely because Japan was quick to modernize their military power, and Japan's modernization came from Europeans and America stepping all over them.
Right Japan's modernization came from European's stepping all over them and that is why Japan defeat Russia in the Russo-Japanese war and became the first Asian state to defeat a Western power? Japan did not only fight against the Chinese in modern times but also in the ancient world. In the three encounters between Japan and China in the Ancient world the Japanese won two of the wars against the Yuan Dynasty and lost the third against the Ming after occupying Korea and winning many battles.
@Plato86 Well to be fair, almost all of these wars were initiated following an internal collapse within China itself. The Yuan was basically ruled by the Mongols following the fall of Beijing by Genghis-Khan, not the Chinese themselves. And yes, Mongols was stupid enough to try to invade Japan by sea where a typhoon destroyed them. But once the Ming dynasty was established and the Chinese drove out the Mongols, they also defended against further Japanese attacks.
@Epikiwi During WWII, China was bitterly divided among themselves (Communist rebellion) when Japan decided to step in and say hello. Even when China decided they needed to unite to try and drive out Japan, they still, in reality, fought themselves more than the common enemy. So really, I think Japan was either really lucky or are opportunists, and these examples are not valid to say Japan dominates China since ancient times.
(Continued) Thus the Yuan armies that invaded Japan in the 1300's were essentially Chinese armies led by both Chinese and Mongol generals. Japan defeated these Chinese soldiers twice and maintained their independence from China. As for the Ming, while it is true that the Ming drove out the Mongols and Japanese, you seem to look over that so after the war with the Japanese the Ming dynasty collapsed. The war with the Japanese was strained the resources of the Ming and exposed its weakness.
You do not defeat the greatest dynasty in all of Asia twice based on luck alone. The typhoons helped the Samurais defeat the Yuan twice but the deciding factor remained the warriors of Japan.
Even with their advanced technology, superior numbers and aid from the Koreans, the Ming struggled to defeat the Japanese during Japan's invasion and occupation of Korea in the ancient world. The fact is that the Japanese were battle hardened by centuries of internal warfare and help superior tactics.
@Plato86 Truth is, when Mongols invaded on their ships, which the Chinese secretly build for rivers instead of the sea, the chemical bombs the Chinese developed were used by the Mongols to completely destroy the samurai defending the beaches. You do not seem to understand that the Chinese tried to oppose and sabotage the Mongol rule at every turn. There are plenty of uprising and the Chinese soldiers never fought seriously for the Mongols nor used to the hit-and-run tactics.
@Epikiwi There are a whole bush of political disputes and disobedience by the Chinese but I am not going to get into them. Only, the most famous one where if the Chinese actually build ships for the Mongols for seafaring, Japan may not have survived the invasion. But facts are facts, in the only war the can be described as a legitimate, Japan failed to take Ming. No matter what this brought up or paved the way for, that is what happened.
That is all Chinese propaganda, the Chinese had nothing to gain by preventing the Mongols from conquering Japan. The fact is that the Japanese did twice what the Chinese could not do once, prevent the Mongols from conquering them. Moreover the Chinese could not even defeat the Japanese with the Ming Empire and the help of Korea and the war led to the collapse of the Ming. The fact it was Japan who occupied China in the Modern world and the Chinese still are sore over this.
Secretly built for rivers instead of the sea? Cite a legitimate historical text that confirms this because that sounds like nonsense. The chemical bombs did not completely destroy the samurai, the samurai still held the beach and the Mongols returned to their ships for whatever reason. The samurai also killed many Mongols during the night by sneaking onto the ships. Yet you ignore these facts because they make Japan look good.
"Not the Chinese themselves." The distinction between the Mongols and Chinese after Genghis Khan's conquest of China is irrelevant for two reasons. First the Mongols intermarried with the Chinese and thus there was no real distinction between the two groups because then blended their blood and culture, with the Mongols adopting Chinese culture. Second, and more importantly, while the Yuan was ruled by the pure bloodied Mongols, most of the generals and soldiers were Chinese and mixed.
I study mizong lohan and spear is one of our signature weapons and I gotta say Gordon Lui does it justice. So fluid. It goes to the being soft will always overcome brute force. One of my favorite weapons because it's so versatile. It's the king of all weapons, it's found in every culture on earth.
The spear is a key battlefield weapon in both Asia and Europe. There has been documented accounts where a sword master has been killed by 2 or more spear men.
Japanese Martial Arts has more power involved in it then the Chinese Martial Arts, Chinese Martial Arts involve and revolves around speed, agility and sharpness. @TomTomSATNAV3000 Just to let you know, karate is okinawan, and true japanese martial arts revolve more around judo and aikido (in terms of hand to hand).
I think the Japanese weapons by far are superior to the Chinese, however the Chinese martial arts skill/warriors (i.e. Shaolin warrior monks) are superior to the Japanese warriors
@SiddTheFrickingNayak That's why I liked Jet Li's Fearless, because it's pretty impartial. It's not racist and doesn't have the chinese guy always win, and it doesn't show other races as being losers or evil. Tanaka and O'brian were actually pretty reasonable guys.

The entire conflict arose from one big misunderstanding in communication and culture, which is resolved by the end of the film.
@ShuyuKoukin yeah and fighting usualy is that someone hits someone and then the one being hitted flies 100 meters backwards throught a brick wall and still he isnt affected by it

Embora seja um cenário visivelmente artificial não deixa de ser extremamente belo ,sem falar de toda a beleza das artes marciais chinesas e japonesas.
It doesnt matter whether its a japanese movie or chinese movie. The chinese have speed and technique. Japanese has strength and technique. And might I add a quote from Kung Fu Hustle. "In the world of martial arts, the fastest one who is able to strike consecutively is the winner"
U can't generalize, u have no right to if you don't even practice martial arts so if u wanna know which is better learn that technique and spar it out
i think you can get a very good idea of the strengths and weaknesses of the two nations fighting styles by watching advanced forms and sparring sessions, it requres a knowledge of what matters in a fight though. and not the strengths weaknesses of the style.
you can make a ROUGH estimat who may win based on that, but its by no means a watertight arguement.
hah,in terms of sheer choice of implements of war, many of which can trump the katana china has a CLEAR advanage, just compare the number of various types of spears and pole-cleavers in china to japan, and china has provision for the shield. BIG advantage if you combine that with armour just as good as a samurai.. the katana starts looking on shaky ground. and japan has NO defensive items except armour think i know who id ather be with when fcing an arrow storm
theyre not dumb, but i fid the lack of shields to be worrying, youd think after facing the mongols that shields are a good idea. and that theyd tailor the katana so its usable with one just as easily as being used two handed.
@sanalaha Ultimately it all comes down to skill and experience. No style is better than any other, they are all just as effective as the other. It's really a determination of who's the better fighter.
@sanalaha Actually I've trained mostly in Japanese disciplines my entire life and my brother is a kung fu teacher. That being said, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that Japanese staff fighters would be at a slight disadvantage when fighting against a skilled kung fu master. My brother and I are about the same skill level but he would probably beat me if we were to fight with a staff. However, I would probably win a sword duel hands down :P
funny thing about china v japan.. people say china is speed japan is power.. not at all true. as himura kenshhin said about enishis style 'speed and sharpness of japanese sword power and grace of the continent. chinas advantage is flexibility and versitility, caused by theeyre love of softness and hardness. japan is 85%hard 15% soft, with china its about 57%hard 43%soft. the japanese guy you can see uses his spear in a very 'no nonsense' manner trhe chinese has more variety in his moveset
manga does not automatically mean the quotes meaning is invalid RK may be fictional in its PLOT but that does not mean some of its principles are not true. if youve tried to look up the principles of various arts you'll realise this
and if youve actually watched the difference and done abit of research youll realise what i said is by and large true
for example in comparing the movesets of chinav japan, go and look up a example of a Bo staff kata, and an chinese Gun staff form. (both 6')
btw theres a difference between saying 'i saw it in manga, it must be true' and saying 'they said this in the manga, his fits with everything else i have researched, also, as i have said, manga like RK and samurai champloo deal with serious hstorical events and concepts, theyre just spiced up alot to make a good story
forexample, n that passage theyre talking about how swords like the changdao and miaodao came into being i.e through exposure to the katanafrom raids by rogue samuraipirates/woku
It's true that some Chinese weapons such as the Changdao were influenced by Japanese swords carried by Wukou pirates (not the Miaodao though - as accurate as they claim to be, anime/manga sources are never historically credible) but ultimately, Japanese weapons were much more explicitly influenced by Chinese ones. The Jian and Tang Dynasty Dao are two primary examples, having led to the way Japanese swords are forged as well as the fundamental design of the katana.
oh most definately the tachi and earlier chokuto based off earlier chinese swords. that said, watsuki actually has a citation for that story about the wokou, im assuming he took artistic liscence but he didnt just pull stuff out ofhis ass thats my point
and as for the credibility of manga/anime, i meant it not as such pinpoint historical details. even ones on real figures are fictionalised, like vagabond. but my original line from RK noting the atributes of japan& china being combined by enishi
ur words are true, spears were a general weapon in the battlefield in those days, & the sword was like a side arm if u lost ur spear in the heat of battle.
@mankun31 Not just that spear was considered the ultimate weapon. You have the range with the safety of a staff at the end and the attack of the blade in case of hunting or wounding. I love staff and spear and both are very meditation practices for me :)
@mankun31 You've got it wrong too. Spears and swords were used together in a perfect mix to supplement offense and defense. The sword was just as important.
@mankun31 Yup. The same goes for the Japanese. The sword was only carried during their daily lives, but in war the katana or jian was more of a secondary weapon.
@mankun31 actually everyone brings swords to war, but you're right in the sense that the spear was generally the primary melee weapon in medieval battlefields pretty much the world over
@mankun31 Also spear is cheap to make, and it can help to keep the enemy at bay. Another factor is it can be use to hold back a cavalry charge. In Asia, cavalry can be use as a fast shock troop.
@mankun31 swords were actually considered something pretty sacred in most cultures in the middle ages, like if you're a samurai you would carry a katana for it carried their soul, for a knight it was a simbol of knighthood and anybody who wasn't knighted by a king or queen didn't get one, which is why armies would give their men spears instead of swords
@Vlaxerman343 Part of that was because metals were actually very very valuable in those days due to not having good refining and processing methods developed yet. Most spears given to foot soldiers (at least in Europe) were just your basic hard wood tipped with iron. A blade is mostly, if not completely metal. [:
Spears are WAY cheaper to produce. It's also easier to make the basic movies. AND spears are very effective against cavalry. That's why spears were the weapon of choice for the masses of ashigaru while swords were preferred by the noble men (samurai) who could afford them and had the time for proper training.
Swords are difficult to forge. It takes a long time to forge a complete sword when compared to how long it takes to make a spear. More weapons means more equipped soldiers. more soldiers means a better chance for victory.
Also, it's common sense: Someone with a sword has to get particularly close in order to use it. The spear wielder is a great advantage in this situation. So as you can see, the spear was a much more strategically advantageous weapon during warring times.
@Aelle2000 And the Shaolin used staves instead of swords because they were not sharp, and a blunt concussion is less likely to kill than a bleeding cut - using a spear, which had a sharp end, completely defeated the purpose of not killing your opponent.
Also, in Wushu, it's considered "the Queen of Weapons" because it has long range, it's light, fast and very difficult to defend against - an excellent weapon in the open. It has something to do with the military, not the Shaolin monks.
空手道 was practiced by the Ryukyuan people who learned directly from the Chinese. Indians are similar to the Koreans, making bold claims that everyone laughs at.
Looks like chinese spears are for distracting the enemy while having a deadly point under the fluff that is double sided for slicing. Japanese just mostly used for thrusting, also lighter then the chinese spear.
So basically, all I'm seeing here is that the director wants to say Chinese martial arts are vastly superior to Japanese, and nothing much more than that. Wow....No.
WTF! Everyone that knows anything knows that all martial arts in the area that is now India! Okinawa is and always has been a part of Japan! The way the body movies when doing karate vs kung-fu is TOTALLY DIFFERENT! That is why there is not one style of kung-fu can be defeated by or even matched to karate! DUH!
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Okinawa was annexed by Japan in 1872. If you're Japanese, try listening to some Uchinaaguchi. I bet you you wouldn't understand a word.
Actually the oldest recorded "pictorial" examples of martial arts were found in Irag Beni Hasan in the form of murals although the history of martial arts are even older in the form of folkore etc. As far as martial arts in Asia is concerned there is no explicit evidence but a more prominent theory is that chinese kung fu was brought to asia by the indian monk Bodhi dharma
I have not found one japanese movie where they fight the chinese, but several chinese movies where they fight the japanese, what the hell are china trying to prove, that theyr the best.......?
The Chinese spear was considered the leader of the pole-arms and king of the 18 main weapons on the battlefield. This is not the same spear that you see in those wushu competitions with the bendy shaft that flails all over the place, and the little itty bitty dull tin at the end.
Cause the Chinese are cooler XD jk sorry...I'm Chinese =P But the Japanese techniques are developed from Chinese anyway...And why are we fighting each other? The east should stand together.
You have to understand the context. The Chinese protagonist is trying to win the heart of his Japanese fiancee (I think that's the general idea in this movie).
He wouldn't be winning anyone's heart if he lost all the time, would he?
If I remember correctly, the protagonist's fiancee ran back to Japan due to a misunderstanding. The fiancee was also a martial artist, so the protagonist tried to lure her back to China with a challenge, hoping that he'd be able to explain everything to her. However, the other Japanese masters found out about the challenge and thought that the main character was insulting the martial arts of Japan.
Yeah, I saw the movie too, and the misunderstanding was that the chinese protagonist said to his japanese fiancee that the karate she was practising was too "manly" for her and that she should do Shaolin martial arts, whose movements were more fit and graceful for a woman, she misunderstood believing that the protagonist was saying to her that she was too "manly" instead of the martial art she was doing
The Japanese spear was more a straight, stabbing weapon used in formations while the Chinese tassle spear, was and is more of a martial arts weapon. So it looks like that the Japanese guy could not easily maneuver his weapon in close combat while Liu easily gets close with his more agile tassle spear. I love both but I do not think the tassle spear would be good for battles and ancient-medieval warfare. Just a thought.
lol foop30757 you are retarded, how can chinese way be for getting girls? japanese way is not even worthy of being compared to the chinese, figure this out.
The Japanese was using too much of his energy, so that's the reason why Chinese won.

@sanalaha but you have to know what kind of crap Japan did to China in the past to make the Chinese hate Japan so much.
lordofwater945 1 year ago
@lordofwater945 then maybe china should learn from what japan did and stop doing what they are doing now to other countries
boehmtj 1 year ago
@sanalaha Ultimately it all comes down to skill and experience. No style is better than any other, they are all just as effective as the other. It's really a determination of who's the better fighter.

Same for the Japanese.

@sanalaha Dude this nigga knows all the shit.
Thumbs up for him.
halafradrimx 7 months ago
@sanalaha Actually I've trained mostly in Japanese disciplines my entire life and my brother is a kung fu teacher. That being said, I'm not at all ashamed to admit that Japanese staff fighters would be at a slight disadvantage when fighting against a skilled kung fu master. My brother and I are about the same skill level but he would probably beat me if we were to fight with a staff. However, I would probably win a sword duel hands down :P

funny thing about china v japan.. people say china is speed japan is power.. not at all true. as himura kenshhin said about enishis style 'speed and sharpness of japanese sword power and grace of the continent. chinas advantage is flexibility and versitility, caused by theeyre love of softness and hardness. japan is 85%hard 15% soft, with china its about 57%hard 43%soft. the japanese guy you can see uses his spear in a very 'no nonsense' manner trhe chinese has more variety in his moveset
elgostine 2 years ago 3
@elgostine
it's funny how an ignorant fool like you cited a manga quote and acted like you knew things.
JKFDDSY2009 2 years ago 4
manga does not automatically mean the quotes meaning is invalid RK may be fictional in its PLOT but that does not mean some of its principles are not true. if youve tried to look up the principles of various arts you'll realise this
and if youve actually watched the difference and done abit of research youll realise what i said is by and large true
for example in comparing the movesets of chinav japan, go and look up a example of a Bo staff kata, and an chinese Gun staff form. (both 6')
elgostine 2 years ago
btw theres a difference between saying 'i saw it in manga, it must be true' and saying 'they said this in the manga, his fits with everything else i have researched, also, as i have said, manga like RK and samurai champloo deal with serious hstorical events and concepts, theyre just spiced up alot to make a good story
forexample, n that passage theyre talking about how swords like the changdao and miaodao came into being i.e through exposure to the katanafrom raids by rogue samuraipirates/woku
elgostine 2 years ago
@elgostine
The Jian and Tang Dynasty Dao are two primary examples, having led to the way Japanese swords are forged as well as the fundamental design of the katana.
genox6 2 years ago
oh most definately the tachi and earlier chokuto based off earlier chinese swords. that said, watsuki actually has a citation for that story about the wokou, im assuming he took artistic liscence but he didnt just pull stuff out ofhis ass thats my point
and as for the credibility of manga/anime, i meant it not as such pinpoint historical details. even ones on real figures are fictionalised, like vagabond. but my original line from RK noting the atributes of japan& china being combined by enishi
elgostine 2 years ago
It's cheap to make a movie in which you rape someone you hate like this. Just let them fight for real.
aclock2 2 years ago
Seems like the spear is a more important weapon in Chinese martial arts, mainly because the Shaolin monks liked to use staves instead of swords.
Aelle2000 2 years ago
No, you got it wrong. Spear is more important because it is the more common weapon to use in battlefield. No one bring a sward to a war.
mankun31 2 years ago 16
ur words are true, spears were a general weapon in the battlefield in those days, & the sword was like a side arm if u lost ur spear in the heat of battle.
bobcad82 2 years ago 3
the spear is the perfect weapon...almost. thrusting and slashing ability combined with defense in distance.
cardiacthapoet 2 years ago
@mankun31 Not just that spear was considered the ultimate weapon. You have the range with the safety of a staff at the end and the attack of the blade in case of hunting or wounding. I love staff and spear and both are very meditation practices for me :)
KokoroNoSama 1 year ago
@mankun31 No you are wrong either.
Soldiers in war bring spears.
But real masters bring swords.
TheAwesomejosiah 1 year ago
@mankun31 You've got it wrong too. Spears and swords were used together in a perfect mix to supplement offense and defense. The sword was just as important.
envithepast 1 year ago
@mankun31 Yup. The same goes for the Japanese. The sword was only carried during their daily lives, but in war the katana or jian was more of a secondary weapon.
Nathanroqs 1 year ago
@mankun31 swords* are more expensive and thus were the privlidge of more richer people
spear is just a stick whit a small metallic knife attached to it to put it simple
Puolakanaho 1 year ago
@mankun31
better to keep the enemy far away than close to your head ;)
Kamemwati 1 year ago
@mankun31 actually everyone brings swords to war, but you're right in the sense that the spear was generally the primary melee weapon in medieval battlefields pretty much the world over
Seankwondo87 1 year ago
@mankun31 I do
Chrisx092 1 year ago
@mankun31 Also spear is cheap to make, and it can help to keep the enemy at bay. Another factor is it can be use to hold back a cavalry charge. In Asia, cavalry can be use as a fast shock troop.
lazysunside 8 months ago
@mankun31 only empires that used swords in main fighting were europeans . every one else brought spears
whitelotus77 8 months ago
@mankun31 Actually they did bring swords to war, but it was a back-up weapon in case the spear was lost
langying 6 months ago
@mankun31 swords were actually considered something pretty sacred in most cultures in the middle ages, like if you're a samurai you would carry a katana for it carried their soul, for a knight it was a simbol of knighthood and anybody who wasn't knighted by a king or queen didn't get one, which is why armies would give their men spears instead of swords
Vlaxerman343 5 months ago
@Vlaxerman343 Part of that was because metals were actually very very valuable in those days due to not having good refining and processing methods developed yet. Most spears given to foot soldiers (at least in Europe) were just your basic hard wood tipped with iron. A blade is mostly, if not completely metal. [:
TheYouthHeroic 4 months ago
@Aelle2000
Spears are WAY cheaper to produce. It's also easier to make the basic movies. AND spears are very effective against cavalry. That's why spears were the weapon of choice for the masses of ashigaru while swords were preferred by the noble men (samurai) who could afford them and had the time for proper training.
Puschit1 1 year ago
@Aelle2000
So as you can see, the spear was a much more strategically advantageous weapon during warring times.
taintofshadow 1 year ago

Bloodlovefreak 2 years ago
Looks like chinese spears are for distracting the enemy while having a deadly point under the fluff that is double sided for slicing. Japanese just mostly used for thrusting, also lighter then the chinese spear.
Eesiaemir 2 years ago
actually the fluffy thing is to absorb blood from the victim so that the staff doesn't get slippery with blood.
dhyleck 2 years ago
@dhyleck Human eyes are distracted by bright objects so it probably is to distract aswell.
Eesiaemir 2 years ago
So basically, all I'm seeing here is that the director wants to say Chinese martial arts are vastly superior to Japanese, and nothing much more than that. Wow....No.

@Fuzion
That's what I thought a first, but when u see the whole movie, its a different story.
Taraka1 2 years ago 5
Karate originated from okinawa which, in turn, was influenced by the Chinese. China is the origin of all martial arts under the heavens.
Bloodlovefreak 2 years ago 5
DUH!
4711Heart 2 years ago
"Okinawa is and always has been a part of Japan!"
LOL Proves how ignorant you are.
Bloodlovefreak 2 years ago
Sorry to burst your bubble, but Okinawa was annexed by Japan in 1872. If you're Japanese, try listening to some Uchinaaguchi. I bet you you wouldn't understand a word.
Aelle2000 2 years ago
Actually the oldest recorded "pictorial" examples of martial arts were found in Irag Beni Hasan in the form of murals although the history of martial arts are even older in the form of folkore etc. As far as martial arts in Asia is concerned there is no explicit evidence but a more prominent theory is that chinese kung fu was brought to asia by the indian monk Bodhi dharma

Tareltonlives 2 years ago 3
The Chinese spear was considered the leader of the pole-arms and king of the 18 main weapons on the battlefield. This is not the same spear that you see in those wushu competitions with the bendy shaft that flails all over the place, and the little itty bitty dull tin at the end.

kaptenlemper 2 years ago
You have to understand the context. The Chinese protagonist is trying to win the heart of his Japanese fiancee (I think that's the general idea in this movie).
He wouldn't be winning anyone's heart if he lost all the time, would he?
DarthChuckwa 2 years ago 4
got it, i thought they fought 4 testing their skills
hebrukiller 2 years ago
Well...they are...kind of...
If I remember correctly, the protagonist's fiancee ran back to Japan due to a misunderstanding. The fiancee was also a martial artist, so the protagonist tried to lure her back to China with a challenge, hoping that he'd be able to explain everything to her. However, the other Japanese masters found out about the challenge and thought that the main character was insulting the martial arts of Japan.
...Or something like that...
DarthChuckwa 2 years ago 2
thanks for the info,man.
hebrukiller 2 years ago
Yeah, I saw the movie too, and the misunderstanding was that the chinese protagonist said to his japanese fiancee that the karate she was practising was too "manly" for her and that she should do Shaolin martial arts, whose movements were more fit and graceful for a woman, she misunderstood believing that the protagonist was saying to her that she was too "manly" instead of the martial art she was doing
Protagonist - Your karate is too "manly"
Fiancee - Im too "manly"? -runs away-

BlloodRayyven 2 years ago
Doesn't the lack of use on a battlefield make it not martial? (In ref. to the tassle spear)
ntbcbilly 2 years ago
This is awesome. You rarely see Japanese spear choreography in martial arts flicks.
