One important detail Linco did not mention is the fact that the Linco florescent lights shown here are for indoor use only. I was one click away from buying until I read the fine print detail about the Linco lights. Not saying they are misleading anyone, but when they are comparing their Linco lights to lights that are versatile both indoor and outdoor without mentioning their Linco lights are indoor only is a bit misleading.
To be honest, I'd much rather have the 1.2K HMI. They're built to last and even if they aren't the most efficient, they are the most powerful and can even be used as fill on sunny days. You cant do that with fluorescent unless you have a lot of them or put them really close.
I'm a photographer and filmmaker of 26 years, the Speedotron flash unit does not have a "battery pack" that is a "power pack" it's full of capacitors that store and release electricity to flash, it requires electricity at all times to feed it, it is useless without electricity. Yes you can meter it, with a flash meter, and they are extremely accurate, we used those things for years before digital came along, and we could determine exactly what we would get by using our experience and a meter.
Interesting video, but as mentioned a little bit misleading. The Linco fixture is not as controllable as the Diva unless you add an egg crate..
As for the 1.2 HMI its color temperature ranges from 5600K - 6000K . If you want to match a Tungsten source you will need a full CTO gel. They also generate about 80 lumens per watt compared to 29 lumes per watt from a tungsten source.
This video is misleading. The Kino Flo diva light is far more controllable than the linco flora. also take the egg crate off the diva and you will get more output, put the egg crate on and its very controlable, and dimmable down to zero%. Also what you didn't do was measure the CT, or the magenta or green spike being pushed off those flourescent lights. The diva tubes are garunteed CT balanced, i doubt the bulbs in the Linco are. Truthfully the guy in the video seems to have no experience at all
Great video, thanks for the comparison. Not sure why there are so many dislikes. Planning on purchasing the Linco...seems like a great deal and will go well with my other fluorescent lights.
Also, most models of light meters for still photography have a strobe setting, so you CAN get a reading. Some helpful information would be the CRI ratings, and some discussion of the difference a point source like the halogen, and the fluorescent which has a very large surface area. you can make a point source large with diffusion, but you cant make a fluorescent project in a beam...
I should point out that although there are battery powered strobes available, that speedotron is not one of them. That is a powerpack that plugs into household power. And it does, or I should say, can be warmer under operation. The strobe heads have 250 watt halogen modeling bulbs in them that mimic the shape of the light you will get when the strobe fires. The bulb also gives light to help focus your camera.
Depends on how much light you need, but If you are inside and have a controlled lighting environment I would go for either full tungsten (Hot light 3200K) or the Kino Flo Diva lite (fluorescent and very high light quality, cool to the touch and the most efficient with energy. Unless you have the cash for an HMI fixture, Very hot, and will give you a suntan but not advisable to stand in front of it for too long!
This is an interesting and indeed a comprehensive video, but it would be good to know about light quality or CRI (Colour rendering index) and the difference between them, especially between the CFL, and Kino Fluorescent bulbs. Can you produce video on this? I have used different degree honeycombs on a Diva lite and it was very easy to shape the light, maybe you could touch on the different ones? Thanks. B.

Please refer to the test, you can see the intensity of the light output and color.

@tn2sugars I was about to say the same thing. Nail on the head. Kinoflo is much more controllable.
