That is an odd-looking instrument...but it sounds great, lol. I like this original, but I think I've fallen in love with a cover of this by Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. Don't get me wrong, though; I love me some Dizzy Gillespie. :D
I feel like I should mention his cheeks. No one else has though so I'll just leave it. It might be against the code to comment on a trumpet players jowels.
@megachadthereal I know they are also called wah-wah mutes but who really calls them that. I am a trumpet player and I have never once heard someone refer to it as a wah-wah mute. It don't matter though Dizzy is such a beast whether or not there is a mute on his horn.
I didnt study under Dizzy Gillespie. I studied under the upright player (Chris White) accompanying Dizzy. I earned my bachelors degree in music technology, record production, and artist development as a direct result of Chris Whites tutelage at Bloomfield College of Bloomfield, NJ. Give more props to those who performed along side "the greats". I love you professor White. Hope your reading this.
shit I wish I had this two track performance I have some of Dizzy collection before any thing was posted by the internet.

dizzy's cheeks remind me the nutty professor. skinny then chubby ha. His playing reminds me that i could spend my whole life listening to Jazz and not have wasted it
@matthewhenson1 ...well, i did know about him beforehand, but i don't really see why it matters. i'm just happy as hell that this music is getting out to fans, old and new alike!
Years ago I was lucky enough to hear him live in concert and the sound and emotion expressed will be with me forever. Truely one of the great jazz masters.
@Balletdancer980 i'm sorry but unless you live in a rock you know about dizzy gillespie... the man is a legend not only to jazzmen but to any human being who has an ounce of culture.
@matthewhenson1 I did'nt know before Christopher Wesley White. I like Gillespie as the best trumpet player of the history (to me, much better than Davis). The only one who could play - more or less - like Dizzy - was Clifford Brown..
But I also like the - magic - "walking bass" in this piece.
I am still searching for the music of Dizzy and orchestra, for the radio broadcast in Italy in the '70s "Jazz Oggi". I vaguely remember a bebop-like piece with singers. If somebody could help me...
@rcova The best jazz trumpet player in history MUST be Fats Navarro! May I quote pianist Lennie Tristano? "Dizzy is a nice trumpet player but he's no Fats." I concur!
@GeoCoppens Much as I admire Dizzy, I feel that he roughly played one standard solo all the time. I agree that Fats Navarro was a greater stylist, but to be the best you have to be up against a good many players, from Bix to Miles. I don't know, they were all tremendous: Harry Edison, Jonah Jones, Cootie Williams, Jabbo Smith, Satchmo, Brownie, Lee Morgan, Art Farmer (now he could play bebop!). Best to you.
Beautiful piece. Dizzy Gillespie is my favorite jazz trumpeter. Miles is great, Satchmo laid the foundation, but there's something about Dizzy's playing that really excites me. Thanks for posting this excellent video.
This tune is one of my all time faves... he did it originally with Chano Pozo on Conga... Chris White smokes on this... I do a rendition of it on my Fender bass with a flute instead of Trumpet
