Iraq is waning down, we are probably going to win, violence is at all-time lows for the war, Iraqis are rebuilding mosques, the iraqi government is getting stronger and running there own country better etc, The surge worked, Patraeus strategy worked. The war was mismanaged from 2003 after the fall of saddam through early 2007 when it started to be turned around. Afghanistan is the strategic challenge now.

I got to say that I totally disagreed with the surge when I first heard about it. But as a person that did 2 deployments in Iraq I got to say I'm really glad it's working. But gains can be reversed, we shouldn't be to quick to say "mission accomplished".

If you are against the surge, go to Karballa by yourself and don't ask for any backup or QRF, because there aint none, oh and by the way, you're not going after the enemy because you don't have enough people to mount a raid, you are required to presence patrol on IED alley.

Yep, a lot people said it wasn't going to work, but it did, there is still some violence in the north and in Baghdad at times, but nothing like it was in 2006. Yes, you are right, you never want to get to confident that we are going to win, but I have confidence in the leadership coming in and we are winning now eventhough it isn't official yet. Afghanistan fighting will intensify however and will define the Obama presidency, history shows most insurgencies have failed.

Vietnam was a strategic loss despite winning all the major battles, this isn't Vietnam. Vietnam was part of the overall Cold War, we won the Cold War overall, soviets collapsed, we didn't. Our 'containent policy" prevented communism from becoming the dominant form of government in the world. Soviets had there Vietnam in Afghanistan as well and we supplied the mujahadeens in that war and that war was part of the cold war also. Our objectives in afghanistan are different than soviets, etc.
