I had this laptop. I bought a Macbook pro and one other laptops after my Alienware M15x. Still considered my m15x best laptop I ever had. Sold it because when I decided to start taking classes again it was just too heavy. Glad Alienware made a m14x. Thinking about buying one.
It's definitely a power house laptop. But ADEPTTUTORIALS is right, way too over price. In my opinion, just the looks of it alone will prevent me from buying it. Your desktop should have those specs ,not a laptop. It's just way too powerful and I'm sure no one needs that much in a laptop. I think anyone who buys this laptop is just making a statement. Look at me, I spent over $6000 for a laptop that I will only use 25% of its hardware. I'll keep to my envy17, it's enough for me.
Thumbs up if your're whatching this video in 2012. And besides, my laptop has intel core i3 processer, and it works just fine. Design is one thing, but does it have a strong anti-virus?If it dosen't, that laptop is shit and i'm not wasting 2000 bucks on it.

@vordulmegallah hey man trust me when I say if you buy the new m17x or m18x you will not be disappointed I have had my m17x for almost a year now and have not had one issue with it...my ex has the m15x and has also never had any issues with that one either. they are very solid and stable I have never had mine crash once and have loaded and run multiple games such as WoW, Guildwars, Skyrim Diablo 2 LOD and it ran extremely smooth....good luck with your purchase man.
and i have a dell precision m50 from 2003 and at time it cost 4 or 5000$ to run adobe premire 7.0, still runs like new, the dell precision line is the best you can get for your money that is if you have a lot

Wow, so how is DDR3 1333 RAM good? That's the lowest RAM possible for DDR3 and a GTX 260 GPU? That's an equivalent to a GTX 560-570. This laptop is so overpriced it isn't event funny.
@AdeptTutorials you must know nothing about computers, although ram speed is important RAM timings are probably the most important aspects when talking about speed, plus its not a 260gtx gpu you sped its the laptop version gtx 260m not equivalent to the gtx 260 even, i don't own this laptop and the stuff in it is pretty old but still learn about something first before you attempt put it down ;)
@AdeptTutorials this is the base model for the laptop, when you upgrade it fully, this monster has all the good specs possible for when it came out, it is discontinued now, its replaced by a smaller M14x laptop.

My Alienware M17x with i7 II @ 2.4ghz, gtx 580, 16gb and 256ssd is what you should compare your G74 with and the asus is 2nd to it no matter how you compare it. I know because i have tested both and read tons of reviews. The G74 or possibly Origin was my 2nd choice before I decided for alienware though. Alienware is the still standing king, full stop.

what is the rate of hardware failure in these machines? i see alot of hatred towards them and seems alot of it stems from failure out of the box or within the first few months. i have considered buying one, but after doing some research i am certainly backing away from this product rapidly. i live in australia and don't want to be shipping these things back and forth every two months.

I'm not a fanboy of asus but the asus g series laptops are much much better than anything Dell makes. Dell IMO has gone downhill in the past 10 years. Don't get me wrong Alienware laptops are nice but they are over priced. You can get the same thing cheaper by Asus.

@NGUpremier first off, I don't think anyone would play without the power plugged in. but hey, when the power goes out in the middle of a game, I have an hour to plug back in. how long do you have on your desktop? and 10 pounds that can fit in my backpack is much better than 60 pounds that barely fit under my desk. plus it goes anywhere. work, school, trip to europe, hospital room -- I wanna have a beast machine on my person at all time, ready for any situation. I recommend the MSI laptops though
@killerorange27 Well that's your choice but I still don't think that gaming on laptops is smart. The lifespan is very short and they are are 90% un-upgradable. Only the RAM and sometimes the GPU can be upgraded on SOME laptops. The cooling is horrible and causes a very short lifespan on the laptop, and it gets very hot compared to a desktop. They are very overpriced compared to what you get on a desktop and they use all mobile components. Honestly, just get a MBA for a laptop.

I don't know if I just received a unlucky crappy one, but I had problems with the stupid touch controls, the touch-pad is horrible, the battery it shipped with only lasts 1 hour, the primary video card keeps overheating and I can't play video games smoothly whatsoever (even "older" games like Company of Heroes), the laptop comes with random bloatware I don't need (and is annoying), keyboard feels flimsy, one of my audio output ports is weird, BSODs etc.

Also weighs less >< Its a Dell XPS15 with i7 quad core 3.3 ghz, nvidia geforce gtx 540m 2 gb video ram, 8 gb ram, 750 gb drive. It also looks pretty sexy, it isn't all costume like alienware, but still is stylish.
@richman3211 No I just prefer to build my own notebooks and desktops for gaming; as I have real technical skills. You know the same price you'd waste on a full decked out m18x 5grand+ I can out perform it for 1,000-2,000 dollars less. True alienware has cool looking features but anyone with a good set of tools can mod a case or notebook chassis and add LED's and so on.
I will never call Alienware the best at ANYTHING except custom looks. Alienwares dont offer anything other lesser known (but just as high quality) companies offer at a third of the price.

@MrBonebus Clevo makes the one of the best if not best Notebooks to date in terms out power, brands like originPC, Sager, Falcon, Battalions and many other ones that people think of for gaming performance are build on Clevo models. Sorry to say but Leonov does not make powerful laptops.. they're more for business. They don't focus on gaming like "gaming brand" laptops as stated above. Leonovs have very tough builds long lasting laptop that's average in power.

@MrBonebus Looked at 'em (Lenovo US store), again.. in terms of gaming well.. they suck, especially or the price. The top line GPU that they use is a Quadro 2000, a workstation GPU specializing in 3D apps, rendering, that stuff. A lot more expensive than GTX gaming cards and a lot poorer in gaming performance. The top for Clevo is dual ATM 6990's (one AMD 6990 is somewhat stronger than an GTX 580). Also, that dual build is cheaper than the Lenovo I configured.
Dont get the alienware it takes forever to boot (desktop speed XPS boots faster and can play what alienware can) and alienware breaks down on you less than a year

I had an M17R3 til it turned out to be a lemon. Dell support is probably the worst on the planet and that's enough to keep me away from future AW purchases. I had to up my minutes on my cellular plan because of the time spent calling Dell EVERYDAY for anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours per call. They finally sent me an M18 replacement but I'm done with Dell/AW.

Fanboys everywhere. "best gaming laptop" is depended on the configuration of one, not a brand. If you're going for raw performance, Clevo (literally looks like a brick(ugly)) is the way to go. Alienware charges more money for perfomance radio because you're buying the design, so if looks are a big thing for you, why the hell not. Also, Alienware is full of bloatware.
ASUS goes for mid range laptops with the 560m. My money went to MSI, power (up to 580m) and looks pretty darn good.
I have this laptop but it's modded with a radeon 6990m (fastest mobile gpu in the world) It also has a i7 940xm, so all who say this computer is old. EAT IT!

Gaming on laptop = stupid. Have fun with your 2 year lifespan and 1 hour battery life. Oh, and it being 10 fucking pounds. Oh and they're overpriced as fuck. Laptops are not meant for gaming, what are the chances of you going out to a cafe and pulling out a 15 inch monster to play games. If you want a laptop, buy a real laptop and let the gaming be done on the desktops. Oh and the cooling is horrid on laptops too.

@NGUpremier first off, I don't think anyone would play without the power plugged in. but hey, when the power goes out in the middle of a game, I have an hour to plug back in. how long do you have on your desktop? and 10 pounds that can fit in my backpack is much better than 60 pounds that barely fit under my desk. plus it goes anywhere. work, school, trip to europe, hospital room -- I wanna have a beast machine on my person at all time, ready for any situation. I recommend the MSI laptops though

@killerorange27 Well that's your choice but I still don't think that gaming on laptops is smart. The lifespan is very short and they are are 90% un-upgradable. Only the RAM and sometimes the GPU can be upgraded on SOME laptops. The cooling is horrible and causes a very short lifespan on the laptop, and it gets very hot compared to a desktop. They are very overpriced compared to what you get on a desktop and they use all mobile components. Honestly, just get a MBA for a laptop.

I don't know if I just received a unlucky crappy one, but I had problems with the stupid touch controls, the touch-pad is horrible, the battery it shipped with only lasts 1 hour, the primary video card keeps overheating and I can't play video games smoothly whatsoever (even "older" games like Company of Heroes), the laptop comes with random bloatware I don't need (and is annoying), keyboard feels flimsy, one of my audio output ports is weird, BSODs etc.
Maybe you will be lucky.

Also weighs less >< Its a Dell XPS15 with i7 quad core 3.3 ghz, nvidia geforce gtx 540m 2 gb video ram, 8 gb ram, 750 gb drive. You know the same price you'd waste on a full decked out m18x 5grand+ I can out perform it for 1,000-2,000 dollars less. True alienware has cool looking features but anyone with a good set of tools can mod a case or notebook chassis and add LED's and so on.

Like I said before, laptops will inevitably be weaker than desktops, but desktops don't have the mobility factor. That in it's own make laptops worth it, or for most needed.

Sorry to say but Leonov does not make powerful laptops.. they're more for business. They don't focus on gaming like "gaming brand" laptops as stated above. Leonovs have very tough builds long lasting laptop that's average in power.

@MrBonebus Looked at 'em (Lenovo US store), again.. in terms of gaming well.. they suck, especially or the price. The top line GPU that they use is a Quadro 2000, a workstation GPU specializing in 3D apps, rendering, that stuff. A lot more expensive than GTX gaming cards and a lot poorer in gaming performance. The top for Clevo is dual ATM 6990's (one AMD 6990 is somewhat stronger than an GTX 580). Also, that dual build is cheaper than the Lenovo I configured.

I had an M17R3 til it turned out to be a lemon. Dell support is probably the worst on the planet and that's enough to keep me away from future AW purchases. I had to up my minutes on my cellular plan because of the time spent calling Dell EVERYDAY for anywhere from 30 min to 2 hours per call. They finally sent me an M18 replacement but I'm done with Dell/AW.

Fanboys everywhere. "best gaming laptop" is depended on the configuration of one, not a brand. If you're going for raw performance, Clevo (literally looks like a brick(ugly)) is the way to go. Alienware charges more money for perfomance radio because you're buying the design, so if looks are a big thing for you, why the hell not. Also, Alienware is full of bloatware.
ASUS goes for mid range laptops with the 560m. My money went to MSI, power (up to 580m) and looks pretty darn good.
