  • This film must have been intended for the American market because the British commentator is using American terms and expressions.

  • Wow...! Good Stuff....!

  • i miss speed's broadcasts of historic motorsports like that. i dont remember ever seeing them anymore.

  • welspin...at 130 or 140 no most....

  • Wow.............

  • these are pilots, with well laid eggs, not little women now!!

  • wow it says you could have wheelspin at over 160 km/h!!!

  • @lordlingcp 320 kmh in 1938...

  • @sinfoneura wheelspin at 320kmh?

  • @lordlingcp yes..200mph...

  • @sinfoneura Only the prototipe vw aerodinamic beetle, alcanzaba 135 kmH..4 cyl y 1.4 l...The UNION desingn of F Porsche..Supero a los prototipos mercedes y se convirtio en un icono.Pero la version restaurada no quedo nunca a punto y tiene problemas de temperatura..El mismo año el autobus Reichban alcanzaba 120 kmh..Estamos hablando de 1938..

  • @sinfoneura thats insane

  • Great piece! I hope they do a follow up with the Mercedes-Benz Silver Arrows, which were the first Silver Arrows in 1934. They had arrived at their first race and were slightly over the weight limit. Team director Alfred Neubauer, had the German racing color white paint stripped off over night and they made the race in aluminum/silver. Hence, The Silver Arrow was born. Auto Union followed suit afterwords. Subsequently, Germany is the only country to have two racing colors.

  • riga is in LATVIA!

  • It's a shame the "mainstream" media chooses to ignore this period in motorsport history. Speedvision's rare glimpse into pre-war Grand Prix is unlikely to be repeated due to political and commercial reasons (IMO)

  • I believe it was not the Czech GP, seen in the footage, but Yugoslavian Gp in Belgrade. It was won by Tazio Nuvolari, although only five cars were in competition, two Mercedeses, two Auto Unions and a Bugatti, owned and raced by Bosko Milenkovic.

  • Furthermore Manfred von Brauchitsch didn't want to participate in the race because the WWII started on the very same day. It is said that he wanted to fly to Switzerland, but was intercepted at the airport by Alfred Neubauer. Mercedeses seemed a little faster than the AUs, but Lang had mechanical problems, Brautchitsch spun and nearly colided with Nouvolari. Distressed? So Nouvolari won the last GP of pre WWII era.

  • well done Crosthwaite and Gardener. When Audi wanted to revive these cars they chose a small company in southern England of all places. That might even convince some Americans that we're pretty good at engineering here as well. Wouldn't mind a bit of Crosthwaite and Garden Furniture myself in fact.

  • @ruddytechnik Gardiner, even.

  • Put me in a time machine and sent me back! These cars were ground breaking in their time, there's nothing like them these days.

  • Era of the the Titans when sex was safe and motorsport was dangerous!

Uber respect 2 the drivers who lost their lives driving the awesome beasts without driver aids or seatbelts.

    R.I.P.

    R.

  • garden furniture alloy eh?

  • DROOOOOLLL!

  • pfft, he has some parents with benefits

  • folks back then were truly mad.

  • cars now.. like the mercedes mclaren formula car.or ferrari car f2009.. are amazing pieces of technology..

back then.. that technology would be unable to be dreamed of.

  • obviously. large electricity grids were unheard of back then, and computers didnt exist. all the engine calculations and body planning was done by hand back then, too.

  • best motor sound every real live at 100 year audi

  • Very nice

  • These V16 engines are truely works of art. The roller crank alone is an engineering marvel in that it's built up out of dozens of splined bits and rollers. The race tracks were horrible...bumps and holes all over so getting a car and driver to last the distance was a real test of endurance. Getting the V16 parts out of Russia was a real cloak and dagger affair! Really one of the greatest resurrections of our time.

  • @MGB1977Red I agree wit you !00% but I am confused! the comentator says George Meyer? I think he meant Bernhardt Rosemayer what do you Think?

  • @pepe190 Yes, I think he means Bernd Rosemeyer, probably the best-known Auto Union ace.

  • @galoon Thanks much for your comment, anyhow those cars were amazing particulary when before these restorations and videos were made , all we had were sotries from the elderly, printed material and some films.

  • @pepe190 They sure were amazing! I have a 1/18 replica of the 1938 D-Type Auto-Union--it's streamlining and real aerodynamics just made everything else look ancient! I have a book published in 1961 by Ralph Stein (Treasury of the Automobile), who gave a wonderful account of the 1930s Grand Prix races involving these amazing Auto Union and Mercedes cars. Their performance was jaw-dropping!

  • motorcycle riders were recruited to drive the audi cars. bc they had better balance.

  • the technology back then.. was amazing. truly impressive. we had the model a flat head v8. less than 90 hp. they had 200 mph. yes.. very true.. germans got us to the moon. very very true. germany is good i think. very good. but. as i said. cars now.. are truly computers. variable everything. but . at that time. these cars were certainly truly futuristic. deutschland uber alles

  • @12valvepower1 ever heard of the american offenhuaser I-4 that dominated indy racing until the late 60's?america wasn't all about flatheads as people think.in N/A form it had 420hp in the mid/late 30's

  • Comment removed

  • Yes...especially when the pinnacle of racing(F1) is based on the Silver Arrows...

Those were GERMAN rocket scientists which got the US to the moon.

  • Laughable? I assume u still remember who holds the speed record on public roads don't u? Because it's still Mercedes and was done in the 1940's

  • Yeah, interesting facts... First of all, there was no Czech GP in 1939. II WW started on 1st September, not on 3rd. That means they were talking about The 1939 Belgrade City Race Grand Prix.

  • dick semen

  • Great Video...many many interesting facts...but the host is unbelievable nasty :S

The Auto Union race car was designed and built by F.A. Porsche...a great car with a very special part in the German (-car) history ;)

  • @BrianSupreme

The Typ A was developt with Ferdinand Porsche, Typ B and C were developt by Ferry Porsche and Typ D as driven by Stuck in the video was developt without Porsche it was designed by von Eberhorst a Auto Union designer

  • Great video! Awesome cars.

  • great vidio past beuty. silver and gold
