  • I don't know Phish...so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'll just assume that this song was a rather ill choice for the singer.

  • Christ...what a mess

  • he cant sing

  • bawnnnng rips

  • Why on earth did they not let Page sing this!!! Trey can't sing this song..

  • awful singing

Phish should stick to what they do best: wank jams

  • alright, it may have not been his best performance, BUT, you can not talk sh*t about his performance unless you were the one performing. its trey, come on guys. he's not just a stoner, he's a very talented musician. just try and write something like You Enjoy Myself or Stash.

  • Thumbs up for Phish doing it.

Thumbs down for singing it bad.

  • Nice Bong Tokes..... If you dont cough, You dont get off!

  • Painfully bad (that goes for the quaity, too). Still, their version of Watcher was awesome!

  • hack hack hack puffff

  • Something the complainers have in common - they don't upload Phish vids. Taopauly does. Thank you taopauly.

Also, Page sounds great here, and could do a better job with the entire song than Trey. Page's vocal range overlaps with Phil Collins' range.

  • ugh.. his timing is all off.. sorry bud.. I kept an open mind but the musicians are awesome.. but it's not a good song for Trey. Sounds like you were having fun though. lol

  • can someone say OOOH WEE....put that cat out of his misery...LOL

  • Ridiculous

  • Terrible!!!!

  • I think this is hilarious; here you have a great band, performed by a talented prog band who couldn't perform two golden Genesis songs, and a cougher making sense of it all.

  • Phish's singer gives singing a real bad name! He totally ruined this song.

  • Oh deary me.

  • @taopauly--- "Unoriginal"...yet you copy my ORIGINAL staement?!?! Brilliant!

  • Haha, oh so f*&king appropriate, it sounds like it was it a good party there...:-)

  • I think it's funnier with the sound effects from stoner dude (coughs like a dude).

  • So pathetic. Phish are so lousy. I sing so much better just at karaoke. Phish are ridiculous.

  • fishman lookin all snaazzy playin those drums

i think phish did awesome covers of genesis, dont know what some of you are talkin bout.. and they may not be the best of singers, i dont think so, but at least they put feeling into the music, thats what matters most hahaha

  • Man, this guy's voice sucks! No wonder all the stoners think this band is great, they're normally too fucked up to care what the singer sounds like

  • pcburgh01 VAI TOMA NO CU SUA BICHA! If you knew Genesis...You´re the new Generation fucking the World without a reason and even without an aim, just

producing, buyiing and selling these kind of shit music anywhere...I hope you

would go back to see good music as I saw in the 70 and 80...Sorry seu PALHAÇO!

  • @Oica67 go back to the eighties......we don't need your opinion. if you knew anythig about Phish you would know that in concert the song would be over and Trey and co. would embarass Genesis.

  • @jasonflood29 seriously; it's your video. the rest of you whiners go watch it somewhere else then. My god we have a nation of whiny pussy "I AM SPECIAL"! people. shut up already; it's his video! Let it be. thanks for the post.

Unlike these "pay respect" and "phans" I have it on my DVR and can watch at my own house. don't listen to these DB"s

  • gotta cough to get off

  • haha dude is cheifin a storm in the background

  • Somebody is smoking a bole in the background. I know the sound. The flickering, the sucking, the coughing. I'm onto you, mister.

  • gabriel...ultimate dickhead. off promoting a FUCKING COVERS ALBUM....and its shit.

  • Jasonflood........relax man.....It's funny.....but I think you may be funnier....Did you expect no reply at all to your uptight absurdity?

  • thanks for posting dude. if people watched this...they should avoid bitching about what you were doing when you recorded it.And why is it that everyone thinks they have a right to claim Phish as" their" band? Phish has great phans and a bunch of doucebags who like to bitch at people because they have been to more shows or sold more shit on tour. BFD

  • Is Trey Anastasio supposed to be a good singer? From a technical standpoint, they can play the song, but it is missing something. Phish Sucks, thanks for ruining this phil song!

  • epic fail, vocals suck, groove is non-existent. Watcher Of The Skies sounded a lot better. Have those lungs checked dude

  • smoking something good I hope?

  • To those of you who say they can't sing, listen to them do accapella (Amazing Graze, etc.) or even a vocal jam on You Enjoy Myself (come on, who else can do that??).

  • @Mooj

Or the old chestnut, "Hello my Baby." Very cool.

  • Very talented band but very overated, just my opinion. Musically they are great but vocally they are terrible!!! How did they get on the bill????

  • Not very good at all.

  • is this smellchecjker13.... smoke up dude`

  • great video doctor. bong hits make it so funny, comments on here are also hilarious.

"Yep, more proof that people suck"

  • Put the bong down, coughy. Couldnt wait the 4:14? LOL

  • Dr. Pauly is the bomb!

  • They could have chosen a better song...

  • No me gustó para nada esta versión, realmente muy mala. Watcher of the skies le salió muchisimo mejor, pero esto es berreta. Y vos, hermano, como vas a toser asi mientras grabas, son un desastre, loco!

  • Admit it... You were taking Bong Tokes while recording this video, Taopauly!! lol

  • Ay! Sure wish Genesis would have performed. Even if Phil is still without use of his hands, Chester could have drummed on something. I think it would have been so much better.

  • trey's voice is a joke. can phish cover any song without sounding like the high school's best at the talent show?

  • It's called honesty, and soul. Go listen to your fake bands, and live the Messiah alone.

  • haha bonghits while recording the tape. way to reinforce a stereotype.

  • Awsome!

    Phish nailed the "No Reply".

Genesis should've got on without Peter G, perhaps "Firth of fifth" with Steve Hackett. The excuse of Peter G not in attendance is not good enough not to play a set. Maybe more to the story of refusing to play may lie in past unsettled resentments towards Steve Hackett. Genesis did play in an VH 1 musicawards ceremony with Chester & Daryl in Vegas not too long ago.

  • Dude. You're coughin' like you're bottom-lunging bong rips!!

  • LOL Fishman looks like turtle from entourage in this video !!!!

  • I bet Genesis really regrets not playing. Phish could have still played Watcher of the Skies to open the set, Trey gives his speech, then welcomes Genesis to the stage. They could have played Throwing it All Away or a medley or something. Would have gone over much better I think. As much as I love Phish, them playing Genesis pop songs just isn't them. But, I'd love to see them do the entire Lamb Lies Down on Broadway this Halloween.

  • @Gianthogweed I second that emotion!!

  • @Gianthogweed

LOL - Henrietta (Jon) playing drums on "The Waiting Room."

I can see it now - would really love to see that happen!

  • Bongs hits....aaaaah!

  • Holy Crap!!!!!!! Can't you put down your shit long enough to pay respects????

  • these coughs are a disgrace!!!!!

  • i am at a loss for words this is so bad

  • Should've been Page singing on this one. And nice bong hits!!! LMAO

  • @mlester72 Okay he does in the break. Whoops! Forget the first line a little? ;-P

  • @mlester72 Thanks!

  • No Reply At All *

*Special guest Taopauly on the Roar w/ sour diesel

  • @drummer5252 KUDOS!

  • Trey Anastasio on the Guitar, Mike Gordon on Bass, Jon Fishman on the drums, Page McConnell on the Keys, and special guest Taopauly on the tube*

    *Roar w/ Sour Diesel

  • poor bloke cant sing

  • just shows how much of an amazing band they are :)

  • This song sounds like such a little ditty at first, but try to play the damn thing....it's very difficult.

Cactus did a nice job on the bass, including the little solos/licks.

I like the bong solo in the background as well! Rock on! : )

  • IDK, listen to 'Three Sides Live.' No horns though.

  • Again, love the bong solo!

This song seems like such a little ditty at first, but try to play the damn thing - even Genesis can't really nail it live.

Cactus got the bass solo down, which is A Good Thing.

  • this guy is so high. want a cough drop?

  • Oh god! What can I say?

  • The diversity of Phish is an amazing thing that has eluded most musical acts of the past 20 years.Hard pressed to find another band that can cover tunes with such accuracy, all while creating an original sound of their own.I was amazed when I heard them do the complete White Album back in 1994...I mean ,c'mon! Who the hell learns a complete album to play one time only and leave it alone?Unbelievable musicians~!!!

  • check out 10-31-96 or 11-2-98, they covered a talking heads album in 96 and dark side of the moon in 98 and nailed them both

  • First Off, Bong Hits in the Background...Perfect

Second, in reply to some....I hope Cable watchers and you think Phish suck....just helps get tickets to the shows, that mind you, sell out in the time it takes you to click buy tickets.

As well as these were very boring songs for musicians of this caliber to play.

And TREY! WTF! Were was Jen, Russ, and Natalie on the No Reply!!!....oh then TV land might have liked it and tried to scalp my ticket.

  • @adambrilhante

    Jen Hartswick!

What is she up to these days?

  • @jrlong29 I didn't make this for you, so I din't give a shit what you say.

  • Phish did this one for themselves, Watcher of the Skies was for Genesis, this one was for themselves. They've been ignored by mainstream, and this is their chance to make a mockery of the situation. By singing those words to the "Who is Who" in the audience!

  • Phish did this one for themselves....just listen to the lyrics...Phish has been ignored by mainstream, and all the who is who is there...listen to the lyrics....this one is all about phish in disguise as a cover for Genesis, and a reason to play to them such words...Watcher of the Skies was for Genesis, this one was for them.

  • I think they did this one for fun of the lyrics....they are more talented as a group then most of the musicians out there, and perform amazing shows, but "is anybody listening? there is no reply at all" to the "Who is Who" in the crowd. Did Trey sing it well? Not really, but who cares...the message is sent! :)

  • Does not matter what your smokin! I love phish but for me the performances really did not sound good. I understand the quirky musical styling connection between the bands and treys love of them but it really did not go over well. Honestly I think the songs they choose were not that great. Sort of sad, millions of Cable TV households seeing phish for the first time are probably thinking there crap now.

  • hahaha its funny i can here you smokin int he backround

  • LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

  • Musically exceptional! Vocally marginal! Bong hits Priceless!!! Good job guys! ps... I am normally a huge critic... the last five albums sucked ass!!!!

  • this guy cannot sing at all

  • certainly not phish at their best, this isn't their kind of song

  • Ouch.

  • No, they most certainly did NOT sound good musically. What a stupid comment! This was PAINFULLY bad.

  • OMG X 2!!!!!!!!!!

  • WOW! As much as I liked the Watcher performance this absolutely leaves a lot to be desired.

  • the sound of lighters and coughing throughout the clip adds to the authenticity of the viewing experience. toke on brother, toke on.

  • Should have let Paige take this one. Trey had a rough time with it.

  • It's a very complex song and arrangement for a "pop" tune.

Mike nailed the bass lines nicely.

  • Please don´t do that again..."no reply at all"

  • Phish never seems comfortable in these settings. Give them this same song in their live setting and they could totally nail it

  • hahah leave it to a bunch of limey fucks to talkt shit about one of the best musical bands alive today. " ive never heard of em"

oh you havent? hmm, they must be shit then...

    kys

  • Love listening to the bingers being ripped in background while this is being watched on TV. Bingo....Chaly Ho.....cough, cough....Hahahaaaaa..

  • Bingers and Mash, mate!

    Thanks for making me laugh...

God, I love these musicians...from ABBA to Phish, blees them all.

  • 7. The Lamb is what killed the band, it is a perfect example of a work of art that nearly killed the artist, nothing ever had been done like it before, and little since. the wall is another example of a work that killed the band 8. phish pulled off a very respectable watcher of the skies, and they had to do a later phil song.... big points for not doing misunderstanding or illegal alien...

9 yep no reply sucked, but they did as good as they could have on it..

  • true

  • 5. It is VERY unlikely that Phil is going to ever drum again, his body is ruined for drumming and he said so publicly that he might do some singing but he can not drum at least at this point without terrible pain. 6. Phish HAS been very much influenced by early genesis, just listen the Squirming Coil, in fact the entire unreleased gamehendge saga is a direct decedent from the lamb.

  • Indeed - Gamehendge even has a Hero character named "Rutherford the Brave."

The whole thing - Wilson, Col. Forbin's Ascent, Fly Famous Mockingbird, etc., are all very Genesis influenced.

  • 3. Peter has been unable to come back to the old genesis music, I think he was close, really close a few years ago but just could not do it. There was one 1982 reunion but it was just because of a severe need for money, for genesis fans it is a sad thing but it is just what it is 4. those lame pop songs are a fuck of a lot more difficult to play then people realize, I was in the front row at the bowl for the final tour, and genesis sounded amazing, even on songs I really dont like that much...

  • Look, lets clear up a few things here people:

    1. a lot of bands have had other people play for them when introducing them into the hall, for example, Metallica played for Sabbath who were all in attendance that night. 2. Genesis is and was a fractured band, the fact that steve showed up was amazing, he has not been in public with the rest of the band for ever.

  • God people are so damn critical yeah treys not the best singer but they still sound great musically, the songs are a bit out of his range though I will admit.

  • horrible

  • I agree - I commend Phish for their performance of Watcher of the Skies, and my God, I'm sure the audience applauded after "No Reply" because they stopped playing!

  • The vocals aren't very good, yea - but i mean - its Trey, the guy sounds like a giant nose in general. What do you expect? Other than that, i think they did a decent job - its tough getting all those keyboard notes locked in and they had the horns nice and tight.

I'm not so crazy about the original though, so I mean who knows. Watcher of the Skies was actually fairly awesome.

  • wonder if phish will ever get inducted. Its a no brainer in my mind but it could be years before they even are considered. Not sure if this rendition helps their chances too

  • Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record...So Phish could get in 2014.

  • People just love to complain about everything and anything, especially Phish. I think that Phil Collins should have sang on this one but it's still great. They probably only practiced this and watcher a few times, and they pulled it off.

  • How bout the idea that post Gabriel Genesis blows and that they just might not be into playing that song? Add a lack of quality rehearsal and lack of interest you get a poor performance

  • I love phish but this is pretty bad... i think Page should have sang this one instead of Trey

  • I was going to make some snide remark about the stoner on the couch... but hey, he had the presence of mind to tape this and the kindness to post it.

  • What many of you seem to be having trouble with is Trey and his lack of range. Keep in mind that Phil Collins sings damn near falsetto--Trey has never claimed to have a great singing voice, but he is a great musician, and this (and Watcher of the Skies) is not an easy song to play. Granted, Trey sounds lousy, but this is still pretty damn cool. They are not "baffoons" or "jokers" by any stretch.

  • The bong hits in the background are killing me. Nice touch.

  • love the biff at 1:12

  • I got straight onto the bong in the background. Wonderful! Does it sound any better stoned? A great song, but the key is all wrong for the singer.

  • God, I love it.

    I can die happy now.

NRAA is a difficult song, as are many Genesis compositions.

That being said, I'm wondering when Phish are going to venture again into "Fly Famous Mockingbird", another tough but lovely tune..

  • I'm a Flight Paramedic. What do you do?

  • it is just awful and yes painful to watch since Phish did a pretty good job on Watcher of the Skies

  • i love phish, but that was awful. only worth watching for the fact that you can hear a guy on the couch pulling tubes.

  • @grantgunterify hahahaha

  • hahaha bingers -----~~~~

  • overtoke dude ahhhhh

  • LOL at all the bong hits in the background

  • that cough was all of the genesis Band members at these baffoons killing their music lol

  • who the feck are they anyway never heard of em

  • Hope there is heat in the cave your living in.. LOL

  • god this is painful!!!!!

  • thought it was Fish from Marillion not these jokers lol

  • click click goes the lighter in time to the beat...hehe

  • I have 200+ Phish shows under my belt...I love them. That being said, it is hard to argue that Trey's vocals are a little weak here. Taopauly, I want some of that Sour diesel you're pulling down in the background.

  • Something called J-OG Kush.

  • Their take on Watcher of the Skies was SO much better...this just sucks balls.

  • This is terrible.... not to mention chief thundersparks in the background. It was probably phil's idea to play those songs. Phish should have played "Land of Confusion" or "Invisible Touch" maybe fall tour 2010. lol

  • @

    kevin4711kevin

    stop it

    you're killing me

    lmFao

  • Since Trey just got done touring with his side project and Mike Gordon finished up his tour the night before, I don't think they had too much time to rehearse for this performance.

I think its more embarrassing that Genesis can't get all the members together on the same stage to play their own induction like others.

Seems to me that this is a much larger engagement than a rehearsal with a symphony that isn't going on tour for weeks. Couldn't fly in for the night? Weak.

  • Phil CANNOT play the drums at this time. He has a back nerve damage from botched neck surgery. Steve has not played with GENESIS since 1977, Peter is more into his own stuff, and an orchestral tour is a huge undertaking. He would have had to spend time rehearsing, he is half-a world away. Jet-lag????to sing 1 song anf Phil possibly the other. Sorry but this engagement that ignores real ROCK bands and inducts disoc and hip-hop, and rap, well........

  • All the current members of Genesis were there. Steve, in good spirit, joined in as well. It's a shame Peter couldn't get there but not out of bad feeling. He had prior engagements.

  • Someone's takin some nice bingers. :)

  • Ah well. Had to play a Phil song to be fair. Obviously Watcher is more up their alley instead of the super-cheesy post-Gabriel Genesis. The coughing and gagging is a nice touch;)

  • @SuenteusPo that was fecking awful omg is that the gmen coughing in the background pmsl

  • OMG so pathetic... Watcher of the skies was pretty good but this one is an insult... The vocals at 2:44 are bad, bad, bad... (@taopauly I hope your cold gets better...lol)

  • @mtl2112 Phish is doing Genesis songs while Genesis is being a bunch of pussies and watching

  • @Phishboy26 ? how does watching a band give tribute to your work mean you're acting like a pussy?

  • I would have loved to see a reaction shot of the guys in Genesis during that keyboard vocal......Yikes!

  • someone in the audience needs to see a doctor. I hear a horrible cough!

  • shoulda had Page singing this one. Looking forward to hearing this busted out this summer!

  • Even the coughing and sneezing in the background was more in tune than the Byrd lookalike......call that a tribute??!

  • Trey's vocals have always been Phish's weak point. They brought the performance of Exile down a notch too. Then there's bands like moe. where everyone has great voices. Not fair sometimes.

  • phish is sick as hell, but cant say the same for genesis. who will induct phish when they go in?

  • i have spent a decade holding trey and phishs' music and musical opinion as gold. but i cant stand genisis i wounder if its all the boys or just trey thats into genisis.they'll jam those two songs this summer and make them better than genisis has ever played them

  • What a shame - of all the great songs in Genesis' repertoire; they chose this and didn't even come close to pulling it off.

The vocals are aweful. Honoring a band like this, who a 35+ year history, is a complete travesty!! They should have enlisted The Musical Box to honor them!!

  • This was horrible.

  • Can't wait for them to polish this one up.

    Go Phish Forever!

  • 1:06 is this a pic of a pic?

  • Definitely a rough performance, but I think that's more from a lack of rehearsal time. The song is bouncy enough to fit in as a mid-set track this summer.

  • Don't be so quick to judge. The sound quality here wouldn't do ANYONE justice. I had it cranked last night in 5.1 and it was awesome. The vocals were still thin, but its Phish, vocals are most always thin. The difference is that you had the sick instrumentals to round everything out. Gordo was PUMPING those bass lines. It would be easy to find someone who could sing it better, but I challenge you to find someone who can nail the compositions as good or better, and still get by with the singing.

  • i love the guy coughing in the background starting at minute 1 of the video... what are you doing buddy?

  • What it is? A joke? Go to hell, phish!

  • Wow the vocals are horrible. Shows two things: Phish has never been a strong vocal band, and Phil Collins is a better singer than I thought. Hard to hit his notes and intensity. Hell, he can't even do it anymore! On another note, Phish doing Watcher in the Skies is much, much better. They should have done that one and Firth of Fifth!

  • Unlike "Watcher," I couldn't sit through this...absolutely awful, especially when the keyboard player tried to sing the middle section. Jesus, Phish, know your limits! That was nothing short of embarrassing. I can just picture Phil, Steve, Tony & Mike in the audience, SQUIRMING.

  • Sorry but it's awful. its well off key in many places and uninspired performance. What a strange choice of song! Watcher was a bit better but not great. Why did Phish get to play there? where they inducted as well or just "well connected" ?

  • Sorry, but you don't know what you're talking about. Off key means someone is consistent in pitch, but starts on the wrong note (and just stays there). It's pretty hard to do if you've been playing music for years, let alone decades. I suspect if you sat down, no one could hear a word you're saying. In fairness, the vocals were a little out of tune, but no one in their right mind listens to Phish for the vocals.

  • um, this was not a PHISH concert, this was them playing a Genesis song IN FRONT of them...

  • I agree 100 percent with that statement. This was not a Phish show. Genesis was there. Geez, at least call me a douche for splitting hairs about being off key versus out of tune.

  • Actually the band picks who inducts them. So Genesis picked phish to play

  • Sounds shite to me!

  • If only the vocals on this song weren't so.... rough. I could see either this or Watcher of The Skies in rotation some time. They pulled both songs off musically Watcher of the Skies more so I think.
