I have been to the British museum also 1964byron and I do not remember seeing any separate heads to any of the sculptures in the Elgin marbles. Britain does not need to justify anything if Greece had any real case you would have brought it to a international court and won though you do not appear to be able to do that.

The Parthenon is Ruined and can never be replaced, the British museum is a Jewel of the Enlightenment, destroying its collection would be an act of vandalism in itself.

Im not calling the BM a thief. ELGIN was the THIEF.

He wasnt saving the artwork. He cut them into pieces. In certain cases he only took the heads of statues, obviously s souvenirs.

BM was only BUYING STOLEN GOODS.

Elgin did not buy the artworks from the Greek owners. He bought them from a state that illegally held Greece at the time, the Ottoman Muslims.

This is a pure case of buying stolen goods.

Buying from the Turkish conqueror was no different than buying from Hitler, French artworks, stolen by Nazis in occupied France.

most of the 'stolen' artifacts were preserved by the British museum, something which most of their own countries couldn't do. A lot of the artifacts (especially the egyptian ones) were discovered by the british, if it wern't for them finding and preserving the tombs our knowlage of ancient egypt would be much less than it is today.

in the days when they were 'stolen' they were either sold to the UK or in parts of the empire (of which was owned by the UK). In those times it was completely acceptable to take from what you had conquered (which only stopped happening 60 years ago let's remember). You cannot put todays principles on the past. athenian treasures should be returned because it is only now that the can keep them properly (the new museum).

but im arguing against calling the British museum thievs. If it wasn't for them a lot of the artifacts would have been destroyed or stolen by collectors who could not correctly house them.

Remember most of the damage to ancient greek history came from greeks themselves.

If BM wanted only to protect the monuments then they would help us create our museum and accept the panhellenic demand of returning the artifacts permanently in greece - as you can see this is not happening from their side. Also you cannot claim that you save a monument when you make it in pieces and take home half of it - this is an act of vandalism.
