0:25 instant goosebumps. Love this version! My wife hates Bruce Springsteen. She just doesn't get it. Is Bruce vocally the best singer? Far from it. Does he sing with some of the most emotion? Yes! Does he write some of the best songs ever? Yes! I just don't get how someone couldn't like The Boss.
Nobody did it better, or has done it better than the 70's Bruce. Raw, heartfelt, genuine. And the segways into the different tunes cannot be matched. Priceless.
@MidAgeAllisonFan - i have that whole show i think that is definitly in the top 3 best bruce shows of all time.. hes simply the best of all time hands down idk where id be without his music..
Saw Bruce do this in Cincinnati on the darkness tour,I swear the whole arena gasped when he sang "you lied, baby you lied"never saw a crowd react that again
During the bands 77/ 78 shows they did a different Bruce and Roy can be so in sync in a one off is special. the July 78 roxy show that was live on radio has my favourite version.
whenever the Sad Eyes portion is played in the context of Backstreets, it is different from the final track released on Tracks.
Sad Eyes refers to the middle portion of Backstreets sometimes added during live performances, similar to the Mona section added to the beginning of She's the One.
Based on the differences between this and the Winterland version, it seems like a good part of this bit is improvised, which makes it even more impressive.
Ah yes, the Capitol Theater. It was like home away from home. The last New Years Eve that I was the there, we left the theater at 11:00 am. New Year's Day ! That was a Southside Johnny concert.
"And me, I was so ready to be your fool! I thought that somehow that I could stop your cryin'."
Yeah I've been there myself. He sings of a friend he loved & she lied & played him. He thought he could love her pain away but she dissed him by lying to him & runnin off w the other guy. He realizes he didn't have what he thought he had in her. "Just another tramp of hearts crying tears of faithlessness."
I was commenting on the lyrics he wrote. If you follow the words he sings in this & listen to the story he sings about in Backstreets you can see what I mean. Sure all is fair in love & war... Pretty cliche' until someone does you wrong. And Bruce & his wife split up at least 10 yrs after he wrote this, so I don't think that has any relevance here.
Have you heard the version he performed at Jacksonville 1977? If not id advise you to get the bootleg cos its incredible. I prefer it even over this version.
Heard "Sandy" back in 1974 and been hooked ever since. This exact version could be heard from my Blaupunkt almost everynight me and my friends hit the road for fun back in the late 70's - early 80's. My 1978 Capitol bootleg was the most heard cassette I ever owned. And seeing the actual video was a real treat. I didn't even know it existed. Thanks....
Bruce is still amazing and his new songs measure up quite well to his classic stuff which is mind-blowing.Patty has nothing to do with his early nineties decline. He simply needed some time to bring back his muse.
@vladamih i agree with you and you know what maybe he produces better stuff when he's tortured/angry/frustrated.(look at magic) with patti he found happiness and had kids and entered a new phase of his creativity. at least those 90's albums gave us my beautiful reward, if i should fall behind and human touch, and i love that side of him too
To this day when I drive down Kingsley Avenue (in Asbury Park) I think of my youth, summer nights down the Jersey Shore, the girl whop broke my heart...and Bruce!
If you are interested in trading or purchasing never released concerts on dvd such as this, send me your email address via youtube messages and ill send you a email that will give you access to thousands of similar concerts. You can also contact me direct..I'm on Aol with this user name Please look at the left side of my profile to see a VERY SMALL PORTION of concerts available. Concerts from 40 years ago to 40 days ago, from Springsteen to Sinatra,Tom Petty to Tom Jones..email me for list
Fantastic - my biggest regret so far is never having seen a live Bruce show. Hes touring the US now and I'm glad that my brothers at least will get to see him...they'll be fans for sure...peace!
He played variations on this version of Backstreets during 1977 and 1978. At the time it was called "Sad Eyes," but later morphed into "Drive All Night," which is on The River (1980). Sad Eyes is a completely different song on Tracks (1998). I'll always think of as "Say Eyes."
Go to Wolfgang's Vault (it's free, but you have to register) and you can hear almost an entire show (12/15/78), including Backstreets (Winterland, SF, CA), one of the most widely bootlegged shows in rock history.
I know that middle part is first version of "Drive all night", but many bootlegs of the time noted this bridge as "sad eyes", so I wrote it that way...
That's the Bruce that I remember. Skinny guy with a powerful voice, bushy hair flying, concerts going on & on & on! Thanks for the video! Didn't see Bruce at the Capital (saw South Side there), but saw him a year later in the Garden for the 1st time!
Did YOU see Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band at The Capitol Theater in Passaic, NJ on
9-19-1978 or know someone who did?
We seek attendees of this show for a survey about its set list and band line-up (supplied to you) and The Capitol Theater itself. All respondents have the option of remaining anonymous or of supplying their name and contact info for further follow-up.

Saw a version of "Sad Eyes"/Backstreets in Rochester, NY. I remembered being absolutely riveted to Bruce as he sang. I wasn't too far away - maybe 12 rows away from the stage on the floor. The intensity of those few minutes is still fresh in my mind. I doubt I will ever see the actual Rochester video - but this comes pretty close. It's almost too much to handle. Bruce is America's greatest artist. Period.
Well put. "absolutely riveted"..."intensity of those few moments"..."12 rows"..."almost too much to handle"... all quotes a bunch of us could use to describe our experience. Mine was in Philadelphia. How can I get this DVD?
bruce is the man great vid good song to listen to whn ur hearts breaking like ssj says "I KNOW THE WORDS TO THE SONG ARE REAL I DON'T WANT TO GO HOME"
Why is the idiot (lostlittlebobby) listening to the song if he does not like Bruce? Hmmm, "little" and "donkey balls", obviously he feels inferior with his manhood.
Thank You! I listened to this concert live on the radio back in '78...Had it on 8-track!...This rendition of "Backstreets" has been in my minds eye for 30 years now i get to finally see it...
The greatest single performance of this masterpiece!
@Argentino246 agreed that it's a great performance but you should listend to the 17 minute version from 1977 from a boston concert even better and i thought it couldn't after listening to this one
