  • absolutely phenomenal!! If anybody can out do Idina with that song, it's Lea. Would have loved to see her do Wicked...

  • isn't this the first time she performed this song?

  • I love the whole package of this, but I prefer Idina Menzel's version of the ending of the song. But Lea Salonga is so awesome too <3

  • Steven Schwartz why wasn't she the first Elphaba?

  • i feel to play elphaba you HAVE to belt, and she doesn't, she mixes....

  • WOW! I have always loved Lea and saw Miss Saigon about 20 times on Broadway and love Idina but this is awesome

  • It must have felt so great for Lea hearing that crowd roar after her performance, she really is just pure talent! No words can describe watching her..

  • where was this???

  • @vandwidth Carnegie Hall

  • Thanks for sharing this video. It is sooo amazing!!! Watching her and listening to her makes me fly...

  • i love idina, but lea salonga totally kicks her butt IMO. this is so amazing i'm so jealous of lea!

  • I love her but I was kinda dissapointed she didn't do it in full voice at the end. That would be AMAZING. But she still rocks.

  • FLAWLESS!!

  • 7 people DO NOT appreciate real TALENT!

  • omg. perfection. truly.

  • What year was this?

  • I thought Idina Menzel was the best for Defying Gravity, but now I gotta admit this Mulan girl is much better. Perfecto!

  • is she the voice of mulan????? DAMN......BEST VOICE EVER.........especially for disney movies!!!!!!!!!

  • @unscrup123 and the singing voice of Jasmine from Aladdin

  • Nothing can say but "PERFECT!!!"

  • Looove her!!!<3

  • i think music, like any other form of art, is such a personal thing. some are obsessed with technique--too much of this, needs a bit more of that, missing what-not....but many of us little people just like listening to voices that lift up OUR soul and brighten OUR spirit. lea does both for me. every. single. dang. time. even at 6 yrs old when she was playing Annie. you go girl! :D

  • Did y'all know she's Mulan?? GOSH shes amazing

  • Simply just love this pure talent:)

  • I don't know about belting and stuff, but her voice is just freakin amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I LOVE HER VESION THE MOST!

  • Idina's range seems to be able to reach the highest notes easier... i love Lea's voice, but i have to admit her voice quality changed as it hit the highest notes as the song goes towards its climax, so they becomes a bit 'airy', unlike Idina's (who voice is solid all the way)...

  • @LunaSomnium She was pregnant at that time ^-^ thus having some difficulty on higher notes.

  • @LunaSomnium now that she defies gravity, it's reasonable she sound airy XD

  • @LunaSomnium Idina - solid? Able to reach the highest notes??? Idina struggles with the notes throughout the number! And her voice is so squeaky that, as the perceptive listeners have pointed out, she could compete with Minnie Mouse!!!

  • @jlcal2012 oh er, my apologies if you get additional emails on multiple posts from me, i had an error when replying, but my reply was actually the same thing :P

  • i really like her

  • The long time-span of applause pretty much sums up how amazing she is.

  • Whoa she might even be better than Idina Menzel :O

  • @carrieicecream 100% agree

  • dang gina

  • Splendid singing, just wonderful!! Thank you for sharing your beautiful voice with us.

  • hero worships

  • wow... flawless as always..

  • lea salonga is perfect.

  • Where is this song from??

  • @Cheerdarling100 Wicked

  • @Cheerdarling100 It's from the broadway musical "WICKED"

  • @quadtech888 which is simply amazing :)

  • wow she is absolutely amazing!!! I totally would pay to see her as Elphie ^ ^

  • perfection in every level!!!! she should be in Wicked. beautiful!!!!

  • perfection....my Jasmineee <3

  • Is there anything Lea Salonga CAN'T do flawlessly?

  • @RaySingh87 calm her bloody vibrato down!!

she sounds like there is an earthquake

  • @RaySingh87 nice question. sorry no answer for your query. hehehe!

  • I like as when Lea walks out of the stage.....within the thundering .....clap of the audience and after making them happy.....there she walks back to the backstage facing her personal life.....a life where no matter she is centered by the sea of people.....her walk reminds me telling that we all have our own walk to our own life. : ) Lea, you are so graceful and blessed!

  • WOW...now i really want to see her as Elphie! ;(

  • is there anything she doesnt do flawlessly?

  • Awesome!

  • she's the world class..... up to now ....

  • She doesn't have to belt. For me defying gravity means being lightweight anyway. I guess she made her very own interpretation of the song.

  • man she's got a beautiful voice! i wonder if she's met sutton foster. they'd be great friends

  • @TheChikWithTheHair They actually know and adore each other. :-)

  • LOVE Lea Salonga!!

  • I just got chills.

  • She truly has defied gravity, as the first asian to play Éponine and Fantine in Les Misérables, everyone deserves the chance to fly. Pure talent!

  • All i can say is : "WOW WOW WOW!!!!"

  • So she will be starring as Elphaba when...? Because she would be AWESOME.

  • Maybe because I'm so assimilated to the OBC recording and I've watched Wicked so many times (ahaha) and the fact that she's doing a concert performance. But I wish she had a bit more 'umph' in her voice. I wish it was a bit stronger and more dramatic. But regardless I love her voice. Just not got this particular song and it's high notes.

  • >.< I agree, It is amazing how she hits the notes without belting or shouting... .

  • I wish she'd play elphaba and i wish she sings 'For Good' too in one of concerts.

  • ... Is it just me, or does anyone else just want to hug her when she throws her arms open...?

  • this is perfection :')

  • glee destroyed this song.....don't stop beleiving was cool....this....no

  • WHY HAS SHE NEVER PLAYED ELPHABA?! friggin amazing xx

  • @littleaussieboi SHE HASN'T?!?!?!

  • there should have a Wicked production here in the Philippines and Lea Salonga should be Elphaba!!!

  • I'm holding on to my bubble! hahaha! awesome!!!

  • whats the name of the song that plays for the last 20 seconds of the video? Ive heard it before but Im totally blanking out :(

  • @sophietoons sun and moon from Miss Saigon

  • @hsupeiwei thank you! :)

  • @sophietoons Sun and Moon from Miss Saigon. It has become her signature song as it should be.

  • @H1delta Thanks!! :) I definitely agree

  • Lea Salonga shoud be on GLEE.

  • @pamgotcrazy she is waaaaaaaaay to good for glee!

  • lea salonga has got the sweetest voice in the world, so angelic sounding... the timbre of her voice is just so pleasing to hear.

  • @pedrofribeiro Looks like you're the one who needs the teacher. Go google her name.

  • @mgsfn1 Ok, did it. Impressive, but still, too much vibratto.

  • @pedrofribeiro you're the one who need a teacher and an ear toner!

  • @asteeg1412 I won't argue with some internet hardcore fan. After you learn the basics regarding singing technique, and long after you know who Panofka, García, Viardot, Lamperti and all the great scholars were and what they did, maybe then I'll argue with you.

  • @pedrofribeiro haha... now you want to sound like the Mr-Know-It-All...

I may not know those person, whoever they might be and what the heck they have to do with this video. I'm just a normal person with a normal ear that loves her voice. I can't understand why I must know those things to appreciate music. Maybe you know more than I do in this field but try to be reasonable on your arguments. It's just PATHETIC

  • Why hasn't she been cast as Elphaba yet?

  • i never get tired of listening to her beautiful voice! <3

  • Damn she should be cast in Wicked sometime

  • Lea has mastered theatrical singing. She's amazing.

  • You can tell she's having so much fun singing this song

  • oh chills, love her

  • her and idina are the absolute best!!

  • LIKE A BOSS! She has so much fierceness! Some Elphies don't even have that much!

  • Gosh darn it! Wicked on Broadway, on tour, in the Phillipines, or West End (in London) needs to cast her as Elphie! She's too good to pass up! ><

  • @rproulx100 Because I didnt see THIS video first, and read your comment before watching it, I was like you have no idea what you're talking about! LOL Then i watched the video... yeah, it was exactly what you said... But have you seen this version of her singing it?!? I have no idea where it came from after watching this video, but WOW... Just skip to the very end.

  • It's called DEFYING GRAVITY (Best Ever) Idina Menzel and Lea Salonga

  • Comment removed

  • Wow. That is AMAZING.

  • Gorgeous mouth!

  • Comment removed

  • This is the best "defying Gravity' yet after Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth!!!!

  • she has a really beautiful voice but nobody can sing this song like Idina Menzel

  • Ms.Lea Salonga ,you're so awesome!! I'm looking forward to see you on GLEE..

We filipinos are proud of you!! Mabuhay ang mga PINOY!!

  • I knew she'd be good on this song. She doesn't quite have the belting power that some other "Wicked" performers have, but this was a nice performance nonetheless. =)

  • @ZealPropht i agree w/u... Lea's always said she doesn't belt, but her voice is really so beautiful making this version amazing.

  • @ZealPropht ...she did awesome considering she's pregnant here.

  • She's so great. An awesome singer. I look up to her. She makes me proud to be a filipino. We love you Lea. :)

  • chills. just chills.

  • proud to be pinoy..because of LEA!!!

  • she's amazing!!!!!!! she's my idol!!!

  • @nksw1 Exactly what I posted when my friend put this on FB! haha

    Name that tune!

  • powerful, yet not so much belting.. that's the talent! can reach high notes even not shouting!

    fun to see!

  • love that 0 people dislike this :D

  • super luvthis song

  • YES! My favorite singer singing one of my favorite musical, its a wonderful rendition of this song. And she is beautiful when she said " Everyone grab your brooms" hehehe Love you Lea your a world class talent. =)

  • i want to be able to sing as beautifully as lea salonga...

  • super like!

  • she smushed part of the wizard and i in there

  • @TheOriginalMelly that's how the concert version of the song goes

  • Amazing!

  • Was this is Carnegie Hall?

  • she sings so beautifull!!

  • Did anybody else realise this is a semi-mashup with The Wizard and I? <3

  • @IDontShine423 This is just how the song is written for someone who is singing it solo. It's in the Wicked Music book!

  • @LhamasBecomeLions That's a bit dodgy. i just mashed up a few things to play all of the parts. Lawl

  • perfect! way better than the original. Lea Salonga is timeless...she was the best before, she's perfect now!

  • Comment removed

  • the best of the best.

  • Just look how Lea Salonga and the Maestro behind her mirrored each other's movements at the last part of the song! It's amazing! :D

  • LEGEND!!!!

  • goosebumps on first refrain

  • She never fails to amaze me! Thanks for posting.

  • wow ang galing talaga ni miss lea salonga!! iba talaga ang pinoy!!

  • she should be elphaba she is awersome

  • she was performed great than the original.

  • what song was before this?

  • thnx for bringing honor to the philippines ate Lea! mabuhay ka ate Lea!

  • WHY IS SHE NOT AN ELPHABA

  • @RosellaDance Touche!

  • @SavvyDowning Unfortunately not her voice range. Elphaba is an alto, and Lea is a Mezzo-soprano and is too high for the part.

  • @slytherinnyc ...she's a couple of months pregnant during this concert. Technically, when the baby increases you tend to loose lung space....haha, well i'm a fan of lea! she sang the song on a higher note than the original.

  • @Sibzist You don't loose lung capacity that early in pregnancy - BUT I can remember feeling completely exhausted in the first couple of months with my son, and I think that's what's going on here...she's clearly tired. But still utterly wonderful, as ever! I don't think the song's out of her range, that's for sure...she can sing anything :)

  • @Ellie8969 The song in it's original key should be out of her range as Elphaba is an alto part, and Lea is a mezzo-soprano, but I'm sure she fixed that.

  • I love u Lea.

  • A wonderful world class singer!!! An exemplary Filipina who has never shied away from relevant social issues and is fighting for what is right....LOVE YOU AND MORE POWER LEA!!!

  • All my love Lea! :)

  • its Princess Jasmine!
