It must have felt so great for Lea hearing that crowd roar after her performance, she really is just pure talent! No words can describe watching her..
i think music, like any other form of art, is such a personal thing. some are obsessed with technique--too much of this, needs a bit more of that, missing what-not....but many of us little people just like listening to voices that lift up OUR soul and brighten OUR spirit. lea does both for me. every. single. dang. time. even at 6 yrs old when she was playing Annie. you go girl! :D
Idina's range seems to be able to reach the highest notes easier... i love Lea's voice, but i have to admit her voice quality changed as it hit the highest notes as the song goes towards its climax, so they becomes a bit 'airy', unlike Idina's (who voice is solid all the way)...
@LunaSomnium Idina - solid? Able to reach the highest notes??? Idina struggles with the notes throughout the number! And her voice is so squeaky that, as the perceptive listeners have pointed out, she could compete with Minnie Mouse!!!
@jlcal2012 oh er, my apologies if you get additional emails on multiple posts from me, i had an error when replying, but my reply was actually the same thing :P
@jlcal2012 when i said solid, i meant she could still push out the note, and i'm comparing it to Lea's here in this video, which sounds as though she had a much harder time doing so... futhermore, Idina went slightly higher than Lea towards the climaxing notes, Lea stop short of that additional climb...
I like as when Lea walks out of the stage.....within the thundering .....clap of the audience and after making them happy.....there she walks back to the backstage facing her personal life.....a life where no matter she is centered by the sea of people.....her walk reminds me telling that we all have our own walk to our own life. : ) Lea, you are so graceful and blessed!
Maybe because I'm so assimilated to the OBC recording and I've watched Wicked so many times (ahaha) and the fact that she's doing a concert performance. But I wish she had a bit more 'umph' in her voice. I wish it was a bit stronger and more dramatic. But regardless I love her voice. Just not got this particular song and it's high notes.
@asteeg1412 I won't argue with some internet hardcore fan. After you learn the basics regarding singing technique, and long after you know who Panofka, García, Viardot, Lamperti and all the great scholars were and what they did, maybe then I'll argue with you.
@pedrofribeiro haha... now you want to sound like the Mr-Know-It-All...
I may not know those person, whoever they might be and what the heck they have to do with this video. I'm just a normal person with a normal ear that loves her voice. I can't understand why I must know those things to appreciate music. Maybe you know more than I do in this field but try to be reasonable on your arguments. It's just PATHETIC
The song needs power, (what you refer to as "belting"). It is true that she has a beautiful voice, however doing the high notes in head voice is the easy way. I am a man, and I can hit the notes in head voice. Being able to achieve those notes in full voice, WITH control and technique is a talent very few have. Lea Salonga has a wonderfully well trained voice, but lacks the raw talent to use her voice in a natural, uneffected, honest way.
@rproulx100 Because I didnt see THIS video first, and read your comment before watching it, I was like you have no idea what you're talking about! LOL Then i watched the video... yeah, it was exactly what you said... But have you seen this version of her singing it?!? I have no idea where it came from after watching this video, but WOW... Just skip to the very end.
:( Idina Menzel really owned that song...................... like written for only Mezel and no one can manage to get that from her... but Lea will always be the awesome girl from Manila
I knew she'd be good on this song. She doesn't quite have the belting power that some other "Wicked" performers have, but this was a nice performance nonetheless. =)
YES! My favorite singer singing one of my favorite musical, its a wonderful rendition of this song. And she is beautiful when she said " Everyone grab your brooms" hehehe Love you Lea your a world class talent. =)
she was truly amazing, up until the moment where the high notes arrived. i was even gonna say " wow this is the first one that got close to beating Idina" but i guess that is never gonna happen;p Stil this woman is really talented!
@SavvyDowning No I agree, but she still adds a beautiful feel to the song, but an Elphaba No. Lea's to soft and Elphaba is a power house. Lea is a soft beauty. Elphaba is not.
@slytherinnyc ...she's a couple of months pregnant during this concert. Technically, when the baby increases you tend to loose lung space....haha, well i'm a fan of lea! she sang the song on a higher note than the original.
@Sibzist You don't loose lung capacity that early in pregnancy - BUT I can remember feeling completely exhausted in the first couple of months with my son, and I think that's what's going on here...she's clearly tired. But still utterly wonderful, as ever! I don't think the song's out of her range, that's for sure...she can sing anything :)
@Ellie8969 The song in it's original key should be out of her range as Elphaba is an alto part, and Lea is a mezzo-soprano, but I'm sure she fixed that.
