Seriously though, there nothing wrong playing matches on flat, plain stages w/ no items. Especially if you're playing people who start bragging right after they win...only by using multiple final smashes.

I'm looking at you, Sonic.

Oh, I agree completely, except for the Sonic statement. Personally, I think Sonic is quite a balanced character, and has his own advantages and disadvantages like everyone else. So says the person that mains Ness. Mario seems really well put-together as well.

The only characters I'd say are a bit unfair are Captain Falcon and Jigglypuff as the weaker characters(And they're still not that bad), and Meta Knight, Wolf, and Olimar as the cheaper ones.

Oh, I didn't mean Sonic, as a regular fighter, is unbalanced to any extent. His final smash is just really, well, gamebreaking compared to some others.

I agree with your statement about Captain Falcon, though. He has too many easily spammable and hard-to-anticipate or block moves. (Falcon Kick and his side B, mainly).

Falcon kick can be stopped by literally anything.

Seriously. I hit the guard button, and literally two seconds later my character guards. Reaction time becomes useless. It makes online unplayable sometimes.

Facing Captain Falcon without lag is an easy fight.

I find that sad, because I (almost) never have normal lag, let alone button lag, but my friends will get it randomly.

Don't get normal lag very often, but there's usually some button lag. It comes and goes. Most of the time it's not too bad.

Any idea how to fix it? Or is Brawl's online just lackluster?

It's always been lackluster.. I think it's likely your router that's the problem though. All my friends that have a Linksys play with no lag. I have one, in fact.

I like having pure-skill brawls, with items off sometimes, but I hate picking same characters, and we never "ban" certain moves.

Yeah, that's okay, I was talking about the extreme things like banning moves, lots of stages and only picking the top chars.

Turning off items every now and then to polish your skills a bit is no big deal.
